Hi all,
We have talked a lot about amps. I am interested in building speakers too. I want reasonably priced drivers which are not too expensive. Any suggestions?
I also want to know how good Philips drivers are.
Cheers. |

Hi Vivek,
How do you define reasonable? There are a number of drivers from compaines like Focal, Scan-Speak, Morel, and Seas which are very good. These drivers are often the ones found in many high-end speakers costing upwards of $15,000. Each company makes a variety of tweeters, woofers, and mid-woofs that range from probably $50-60 each to about $150 for mid-woofs, and up to $200 for tweeters.
Less expensive drivers are available from compaines like Vifa and Dynaudio. I'm sorry, I'm not familiar with any drivers from Phillips, didn't know they made them. |

We get cheap drivers in India and also Vifa, Scan Speak etc. I think Vifa is much cheaper than Scan Speak or Eton, but is much better than using some of the horrible drivers we get here. I do not want to spend too much. What I am looking for is drivers that are like Vifa costwise and performancewise but not too expensive.

| Have a look at Parts Express Speaker page. They have a variety of speakers at different prices and I'd bet they will ship to India. For each of these drivers, they offer a recommended enclosure and associated frequency response in their printed catalog. |

I will try it. Thanks for your help. And are those Pioneer dome tweeters any good? How would you compare them to Vifa, Audax etc. ?

Hi Vivek,
I'm not really qualified to make an informed decision about pioneer vs. Vifa or Audax tweeters, I've never been in a position to directly compare. If pressed, I might be inclined to go with Vifa... but I've been wrong before. You might want to try a few comparisons: Pick up a vifa tweeter and see how it measures up against the Pioneer. |

Hi
Philips speakers are fine, but they are not popular. Madisound has a sale on Philips AD163 tweeters. They are old-style, but good nevertheless. But in the end of the day you get what you pay for.
I got surprisingly good results using recycled Philips AD160 tweeters with generic 8" drivers.
Your mileage may vary. ;-) |
