Hi all,
We have talked a lot about amps. I am interested in building speakers too. I want reasonably priced drivers which are not too expensive. Any suggestions?
I also want to know how good Philips drivers are.
Cheers.
Eric
Hi Vivek,

How do you define reasonable? There are a number of drivers from compaines like Focal, Scan-Speak, Morel, and Seas which are very good. These drivers are often the ones found in many high-end speakers costing upwards of $15,000. Each company makes a variety of tweeters, woofers, and mid-woofs that range from probably $50-60 each to about $150 for mid-woofs, and up to $200 for tweeters.

Less expensive drivers are available from compaines like Vifa and Dynaudio. I'm sorry, I'm not familiar with any drivers from Phillips, didn't know they made them.
Vivek
We get cheap drivers in India and also Vifa, Scan Speak etc. I think Vifa is much cheaper than Scan Speak or Eton, but is much better than using some of the horrible drivers we get here. I do not want to spend too much. What I am looking for is drivers that are like Vifa costwise and performancewise but not too expensive.

Have a look at Parts Express Speaker page. They have a variety of speakers at different prices and I'd bet they will ship to India. For each of these drivers, they offer a recommended enclosure and associated frequency response in their printed catalog.
Vivek
I will try it. Thanks for your help. And are those Pioneer dome tweeters any good? How would you compare them to Vifa, Audax etc. ?

Hi Vivek,
I'm not really qualified to make an informed decision about pioneer vs. Vifa or Audax tweeters, I've never been in a position to directly compare. If pressed, I might be inclined to go with Vifa... but I've been wrong before. You might want to try a few comparisons: Pick up a vifa tweeter and see how it measures up against the Pioneer.
Vivek
I will keep you informed. Thanks again.

Hi

Philips speakers are fine, but they are not popular. Madisound has a sale on Philips AD163 tweeters. They are old-style, but good nevertheless. But in the end of the day you get what you pay for.

I got surprisingly good results using recycled Philips AD160 tweeters with generic 8" drivers.

Your mileage may vary. ;-)
