anyone has seen anything on DIY storage using multiple flash usb sticks ?
i can see how the newer 2-4gig sticks,
4 to 6 of them stacked could speed up computer mucho :)
just a thought..while we waiting for samsung to get their flash based HD out ... |

| flash memory disks would be much faster than disks. However, if you can get a ram-based memory disks or even a reflective memory board (as for example cache or for memory swapping), you are talking about real fast. |

i have seen the gigabyte solution already
but it is quite limited in space ( total of 8 gigs max? )
and that comes at a price, wich needs to be always powered on ..
i would greatly accept to use " slower :p "

I thought that USB drives (or pretty much any flash drive) were significantly SLOWER than your average/good hard drive these days.
I'm looking now at specs that I think are representative:
Samsung SATA drive: 3.0Gb/s (that's bits I believe, not bytes)
Corsair 1GB flash drive: 19MB/s (that's bytes I think)
So by my rough calculation, the hard drive is 20x faster and MUCH cheaper per GB.

this is maximum bandwidth/burst speed
acess times on flash are like 0.5ms where it is still 5ms to 9ms on regular hard drives
than the number you are quoting is limited by usb stuff
but flash itself is way faster than that ..
i've read some paper that tested bursts of up to 30gb/sec
and stuff like that
i think that the best drives would be hybrids though .. |
