Please share the things (audio related) that you see out in the world that you can't stand, or things that you used to do, but now you hate to do.
Something that I used to do was listen to music with the bass turned up all the way, and the treble turned down. I couldn't really hear the music, so I had to turn it up. That way, I got tons of bass. Now I can't stand it.
Another thing I hate is when people listen to music in their car with the stock head unit turned up all the way. The only thing they get is distortion instead of music. I have no idea how people can listen to that. |

First, to the comment about ear plugs at concerts, I found that sometimes it actually allows me to hear the music BETTER! How? By cutting the high-end thrash that's echoing around the venue, and the echos in general, thus allowing a cleaner sound.
As to what annoys me? Try the idiots that have the kickers in their cars cranked so loud I hear them a half a block away! Apparently I have a sensitivity to certain low frequencies, and some of them literally and physically hurt my ears to hear. Not to mention the "wonderful" rattle of their trunk that must sound so great in the car!
People who claim MP3's are "Perfect Digital Copies" also annoy the **** out of me!! But, then again, if they can't hear the difference, shouldn't we envy them? They don't feel obliged to spend thousands of dollars or hours on trying to achieve the perfect sound!
And don't even get me started on....

ok - your hi-fi is 10 plus years old and you think its time to upgrade / renew. You start buying magazines, spend $ and time studying, talk to anyone you know with any interest in music , get on the net and read reviews, search forums and finaly feel able to have a semi inteligent conversation with a decent hi-fi salesman.
You spend a few hours in that shop then move on to another and another etc. spend months deliberating, auditioning, take a few units home to try and finaly decide to buy a cd player.
You then go through the same learning curve again with all the other components over the next 2 years.
You also spend years building speakers, carefully trying to extract every bit of quality sound out of them.
After spending I dont know how many 1000s of $ one day it finaly happens - you sit back in lounge room listening utopia and think " I have done it at last and its a beautiful thing"
You turn to the wife and say - so, WHAT DO YOU THINK and she replies - mmmm I think it sounds a bit better. |

The fact that I spend way too much time deliberating over things that probably won't make any difference anyway ;)
The fact that a lot the good stuff isn't easily obtainable in Australia.
The fact that Parts express has a minimum order of $50 US and a minimum shipping charge of $33 US for international.
That I don't have enough room to have a full workshop.
That I don't have a lathe
That a lot of CD's are extremely poorly recorded
That it takes me forever to finish a project

this should give us a lot of perspective on those "performance enhancements" every amp designer / manufacturer claims.
take this 24bit encoding for example. That sucker is capable of a theoretical headroom of 144db. Now, how many of your equipment can reproduce that kind of headroom? how many of us can hear that kind of headroom?
at 20hz, it is about 70db - good for a 12 bit encoding system. and some use the 120db (20bit) as the headroom, but anything above 90db (15big) may cause permanent hearing damage.
A lot of people in this group have engineering background. That unfortunately focuses us more on the geeky side of the equation: we spend time and money on more so on the number side, trying to get more power / performance out of devices without realizing that it doesn't make the least of a difference. |

Maybe it's my system and only some recordings sound good, due to others showing up deficiencies in the system, but I blame it on the recording ;)
I don't have a huge number of cd's but I'd say that the majority are not what I would call really good recordings quite a few are fair and some are quite bad (to my ears).... maybe I should have said CD's that aren't excelently recorded :)

not sure what "that way" is, but to me, most CDs sound very good. Once in a while, I will run into a CD that doesn't sound as good on some songs but not quite as bad either (certainly beat most tapes).
I guess what constitute "good" or "bad" is quite subjective. |

I'm sorry, but I find this to be total dribble.
Yes, there does come a point where things make less and less of an improvement, but aslong as people don't put the cart before the horse, this shouldn't be too much of a problem.
I'd rather have hi-fi ruled by engineering/science types, than snake oil pushing/stone placing/demagnatising types any day of the week.

Depends a lot on what you listen to, as to how rough a deal you'll get. A lot of rock/pop, even some jazz recordings totally disregard things learned by Blumlein and the like as early as the 30's(multi-track recording, anyone...) |

on the cd recording, I would call it "mashed toghether sound" where there doesn't appear to be any separation of instruments just a mess of sounds that it is hard to work out what is what.
One track I'm yet to form a final opinion on is "cold cold night" on White Stripes Elephant album... there is a huge amount of noise in the background, and I'm still thinking it must have been deliberately put in there because it is so obvious!! That is a completely different problem to my usual complaint though ;)

Pretty close - it's actually the mastering labs who can do the most damage. It involves the "normalization" of a track which pushes all the peaks to a preset value basically eliminating most of the natural dynamics. The idea is that it will sound louder on the radio, which is scary since the processors used by radio stations basically apply the same techniques all over again!
You spend you're hard earned money & time to build a system with over 100db of dynamic range & then play music with perhaps 6db of dynamics. Ironic isn't it.

Yes, poorly recorded CD's are something we hate
I have 4 children, so no analog source for a while.
I have discovered that CD's that I like the best, I mean with wich I can make an easier emotional contact, are old classical music records from the 50's and 60's (ADD) remastered with 20 or 24 bit technique. In spite of background noise I feel more "human" sound. Once I read a paper (forgot where) in wich the author stated that the best records in that regard were those in wich the mic preamp was a good tube one and that it is really easy to guess wich one was recorded in this manner. I also like "living stereo" CD collection sound wich was recorded with passive mic preamp. No compression there.
Just my humble opinion.

I would have thought that anything that provokes us into thinking and on a road of self discovery also adds to our collective understanding (provided we share our findings). Just because there are no hard facts doesn't mean that it can't help improve knowledge.
If every scientist said "hogwash there’s no proof" every time someone came up with a new hypothesis then we would still be in the dark ages! It is things that we don't understand, and then try to understand that IMO truly teach us things :)

The original vinyl albums from that period go to Japanese collectors for outrageous sums too. Don't over look the jazz recordings from the same period.
There are probably no absolute reasons for the technical quality, however, equipment at that time was pretty noisy so engineers tried to avoid convaluted signal paths including equalizers & compressors. Therefore microphone selection & placement was critical and a pre-eminent factor in determining the sound. "Fix-it-in-the-mix" was not a viable option at the time, the take had to be right. In those days, before convincing artificial reverbs, these studios also had to have incredible natural recording spaces, the likes of which (due in part to construction & real estate costs) barely exist today.
However, a large number of contemporary recordings are still tracked and mixed to analog tape (1/2" being the prefered 2 track format) so it's not nessercerily a digital path/analog path thing. |

Also check out Verve's remastered Miles Davis series and the superb reissues of the Ruday Van Gelder Blue Note recordings. Rudy of course, recorded the albums in his Hackensack, NJ living room with home built equipment. In an interview (http://www.allaboutjazz.com/php/article.php?id=1116) he claims to be remastering the CDs to sound as close to the vinyl as possible!
As an engineer myself, it's humbling to listen to some of these recordings, made under such "primitive" conditions and realize I would be hard pressed today to duplicate the quality. |

I thought the europeans use more "names" for trim designations than the US / Asian manufacturers. |

Life is too short to worry about stuff that bugs you. I'm just happy to be able to walk and use my hands after a spinal cord injury gave me a stretch when i couldn't. I am too busy enjoying my wife, kids, DIY projects and music. Does much else really matter enough to let it bring you down? |
How true. As a golfing buddy of mine says: "The sky is blue, the grass is green and I am on top of it. It doesn't get any better than that"

Hey, that doesn't work, she's just being kind.
What can mean something is when you are listening to some music, something that she knows, and she says: "Hey! It sounds better..."

The fact that these CDs sound completely lifeless and flat seems to be of no interest. |
Not really a contest, it's intentional.
Some bright minds made a study and found out that most people only listen to music on their cars, on the way to work.
So, for obvious reasons (ambient noise), commercial CDs have heavy dynamics compression and normalization.
The same happens with most FM stations, for the same reasons.
Some studios make test CDRs and go for a ride in a car to test the compression, before settling on the final mastering. :bawling:
This mostly (but not only) affects most 'commercial' music (pop, etc.).
If you join this type of artifacts with a heavy sense of 'digitalitis' on some recordings, some discs really sound like :whacko:.
Examples?
Anything from Coldplay, for instance. |

Now back in the Sixties when we were just whelps, and all the stations we listened to were AM, most of the music on the air originated from 45's.
In order to make them sound brighter, and better on your car radio, the turntables would be run at a higher speed than 45 rpm.
Fidelity? Hah! |

I remember reading a review on the very first car CD players. The reviewer noted the problem with dynamics and ambient noise, and anticipated that production players would have switchable compression - the sensible approach. At the time, it was unthinkable that this new 'hi-fi' medium would carry deliberately distorted recordings.
Little did they guess... |

I hate 'most' compact disks that are remastered. I despise greatest hits CDs that the cuts are remastered. I'll take background noise etc. over the phony thud thud excuse for bass on a lot of the remasterings.
I find myself buying old used music CDs on ebay a lot. OH, and I hate paying 20 bucks for a CD too!

Maybe if it took off todays recordings/remasterings would be different.... |

People who think Class D amps are worth pursuing as a hobby. Go to Walmart and pick one up. It won't be hard, it will only weigh 3lbs. YUK.
The bad recording, engineering and production of early Rolling Stones music. The pathetic 'stereo' on early Beatles albums.
All the people on DIYAudio who have better hearing than I do. |

| I hate my favorite albums that have crappy recording and production, and many of them were recorded in the last ten years... |

People who think that there are audio technologies that are not worth being pursued as DIY. ;) :D

I probably cannot tell the difference. I, like all of you just like building things and solving problems. Build on oh deaf (class D stands for 'Deaf') ones ;). |

I hate all of those jerks selling "snake oil" audio products, taking advantage of other people's honest quest for sonic satisfaction. They give all of us sincere audiophiles a bad name and encourage the further mediocratization of mainstream audio that began with the original release of digital/CD audio!
Take care,

But they are safer than zipper trousers.

Of course not. I left it open for other people to complain.
Edit: ok, I'll complain some more.
1. plywood box
2. sealed with white caulk from the outside
3. "has insulation inside the box." For what? To keep the subs warm?
4. "Altogether it's pounding out a full 2,600 watts of music." He never mentions how much power the tweets handle. I guess they're just there for looks.
5. "It can be used as a part of your home or car stereo." I would love to have that [sarcasm]beautiful[/sarcasm] sub sittin in my living room. |

the color is awful.
hehe.
i saw this in another forum (its been on there trying to be sold for months now) and its just hilarious what people will sell/buy.
i saw a guy locally that was selling a "ultra high end" home theater system for $100. it was just a home theater in a box. some people are clueless.
or, in fashion with the subject of this thread, i hate clueless people :) |

people who whine about "drum boxes and synthesizers" rather than "real musicians"
actors that think they can sing
singers that think they can act
celebraties that are not dead.
people who spend $10,000 on "interconnects"
good on the people who sell them though. it helps the economy to seperate rich morons from their money so it can be used for something useful. |
