i found this in a CNC forum. its a pre-release software kinda thing. if they have 100k people signing up for their release, they will give it away to those 100k people. its at about 60k right now. it cant hurt.
i guess they just want to build up a contact base. who knows. it seems legit, many sites have confirmed its legitamacy. worst case, use your spam email account to register.

just signed up
Current Registrations: 58555
This should be another way to confirm its legitimacy. |

if anyone can sign up for the program, even if they want to do simply modeling, it would help 58k people :) where else can you help that many people!
all you need is an email address. thats all the personal information they require from you. |

i heard some stuff in some other forums that they will just keep it going until it hits 100k. i mean, if they invested in the website, contest, etc... they might as well make use of it. also, ive heard from the "inside" they have the ability to add to the counter.
free cad software is always nice. especially if its good stuff. |

They are at 60,174 but hear this catch:
"Everyone who registers will get the X-CAD product for FREE — but only if 100,000 people participate. So, spread the word and get your free 3D CAD software faster — tell all your colleagues and friends to register too! "
BUT ONLY IF 100,000 participate!!! |

thats why i posted it here.
if its easy to use, anyone on this forum could use it to do mock-ups of projects and any other kinda of modeling needed when just designing something. |

| I'm certainly prepared to sacrifice one of my many email boxes for this. |

ACAD getting the share. >It amazes to see how much money is rolling to this company.
A source said that ACAD sold last year 2.7 million seats for all their software.
If these were all LT which is the low cost version just add 3 “0” to that figure.
Something does not sound right with actual pricing for this software which goes up to nearly US$5,000.
ACAD will pay a price for this in the long run. We have seen this many times… they will loose market no doubt. |

After doing a little bit of digging, I think I've figured out who the company behind this publicity stunt is. If I'm right, I'm actually quite stoked, as I've been contemplating buying the program! I'm not going to spoil things by saying who I think it is, but I will drop this little hint, fing out who the netblock owner of the IP address is, and that should shed some light on the whole thing.
Again, if its who I think it is (which its looking like I'm probably right, based on what some other sources have been saying) its a nice product that should be better with their new version, now that they've re-written it in C++ instead of Java! (Yes, someone wrote a full CAD program in Java!!) |
| ctardi |
| Can you email me about who it is? Or who you think it is? |
| ctardi |
| Also, regestration is up to 82,000. :D |

| I really doesn't say what kind of license is for free. Doesn anyone know? Is it a "light " version? Will there be time limitations? |

Does it matter?
It's free! ;) |

If you're going to spend time learning something, wouldn't you hope that the time is well spent? |

Very true, especially with complex 3d cad.
But what I was trying to say is that it doesn't really matter for the registration aspect, register anyway, then decide if you want to download it when the full details/package are released. |

| I already used quite a few junkmail accounts for that!:D |

How about I just give another hint? Look at the IP address and go two lower, and all will be made clear.
As to the possibilities as to if its a lite version or time limited, my guess is that it will be time limited in some way, unfortunately. I'm also afraid they may be giving away licenses to the previous release. We'll find out soon though. |

Since they already have trial versions, it would be very disappointing if they offer pretty much the same thing. |

| I'm not sure how to do that... |

| All my digging has turned up is that it is run by vericenter, a secure data services company in texas. |

ctardi,
open up a command prompt on your computer (run command.exe). type: "ping www.x-cad.net". it will give you a IP address of the website (instead of the name "x-cad.net"). go two lower than that number to get the mystery site (http://65.165.5.173/). |

I actually have some situation where experienced cad users could not do in some of the higher priced products, it would be interesting to give this one a try and see how it comes out. |

O.K., I guess we'll all see whats' up on Augest 1st.
Thank you Cowanrg for starting this thread.
Very cool... |

| cowanrg |
thank you thank you.
i better see some cool renderings for audio projects though!
it looks like its not a trial version, but an ad version, which i can deal with just fine. woohoo! i cant wait. free stuff rules. |

| They've cleared the mistry and med the goal!:D :D |
| cowanrg |
| i didnt follow it the past couple of days, but i doubt they met their goal :) im sure it was fudged. one guy actually spent a few hours tracking their counter and it appeared that if you took the time left in the contest period, then divided it into how many signups were needed each second, it was almost exact. so, it may have been a fake counter. but raise your hand if you care :-) |
| soongsc |
| Well, according to their counter, it's already exceeded the 100 thousand. One acount I tried I did not acknowledge, and it was taken out of the game never to get back in. It seems they add the counter once you sign up regardless whether it's validated or not. I think it you tried the same address over and over again, you would increase the counter. Maybe other people found this out. |

I received an email from Alibre about the x-cad registrations and saying things like we have to be logged on to the web to use the software.
This was some time in late July . I can't find the email again. Does anyone else have a date when they received a similar email ?
:bawling:
Thanks,
Ashok. |

| I just got the email, it only says I need to be logged in to download. |
| soongsc |
| The server seems to be generating lots of errors. Once you get an error, you can't use that email to open another account. Probably good to wait a while. |
| ctardi |
| I also get a runtime error. |
| ctardi |
| Despite the error, I now got an email on how to download. I will try it tonight when I have some time. |

Well, I did download the software and can open it, but is the first time i'm in front of a parametric design tool so will have to read a bit on how to use it:confused:
I got even a licence key with the download:angel:
There is one catch though, you get adds on the top of the screen. If you don't wnat those you'l have to pay $49.??

Thanks for the link, I appreciate :) :) :) :) :D |

everyone can use a free design software!
enjoy.
i didnt get the link to download for mine yet? hum... |

| Took about 2 hours to get mine. |
| cowanrg |
| oh ok. i just had to go back to the website. just downloaded the file. took a little bit over 6 minutes. woohoo, 175k/sec sustained, not bad. |

Mine took about 20 min to download the 60 or so MB.
I'm now printig parts of the tutorial to get me started:xeye: |

i was just messing around with it a bit, and it looks very easy to use.
i use solidworks for most of my modeling, and this looks VERY similar. and i learned solidworks in a matter of days (well, i learned the basics, and all the stuff i would need for what i do). hopefully this should be a good software to play around with.
edit:
it sucks though because i was really hoping there would be CAM support for this thing. thats what was originally promised. if not, its like a replacement for solidworks. i would love to have the ability to have a CAM interface with the design. |
