well, how do you make one? i want to know so that i can run a 5532 and similar op amps off a single 9V battery.

Hi,
here´s two possibilities to do it.

Something like a BUF634 is another though more expensive solution.
I´ve used it to split rails of a 30V wallwart and it worked out really nice. Besides the BUF634 has only about 1.5mA quiescent current in low-bandwidth-mode which is keeps your batteries happy.
Have a look at the datasheet especially where it says "pseudo-ground driver".

If you could stretch to 2x9v batteries it would improve the headroom no end, and make the earth easier, just run it from between the two batteries.

It would be simpler and extend your battery life if you used coupling caps.

The point is that I don't want to have to use 2 batteries...
