Tandy don't seem to stock them anymore. Anybody know of a supplier or want to sell theirs?

Hi David,

http://www.altronics.com.au/index.a...a=item&id=Q1264

and

http://au.farnell.com/jsp/endecaSea...U=3562657&N=401

RSaustralia also have some, but I think they start at about $1000!!!!

Don't have one, don't know what they are like, specs of +- 1.5db seems a bit crude for loudspeaker testing, but as I have never used one, I don't really know.

Tony.

How would you use this to get an overall response graph?

Why not use something like Behringer ECM8000 mic, build a preamp, and run it into your soundcard and use some of the free software RTA apps available out there?
Spearmint
Dick Smith Electronics sell them as they have taken over Tandy

Here is the RS meter

Thanks guys but I'm looking for something cheap and cheerful under about $50, and analog. It's mainly just for simple HT calibrating and playing around with.
Andy Graddon
also have one, around the $120 mark.

I have one of the earlier versions you could borrow for a while.

Hmmmm

So $49.94 for the Cat No. Q1461 RS Analogue Sound Level Meter is not what you are after.

RS Analogue Meter

This was the one I was referring too.

If you can't find anything send me a PM as I have 3x meters here and will sell you one.

Hey why didn't I think of that

Hmmm nah better to own at least 1 SPL meter. They are a cheap investment for any audio enthusiast.

Thanks heaps guys. I went to a couple of Tandy and Dick Smith stores but they had none in stock. Finally found one at Tandy Chadstone for $49.95. I like it !!!

"Frequency Range: 31.5Hz to 8kHz"

Is that useful for speaker testing?

I think the radioshack one is rated something like 32hz-10k. But then Ive seen graphs of the response that looks like it gets to 20k.

Trying to decide between the radio shack or that one on jaycar..

thx

Glad you got it. I can't give you the exact reference but there is a minor industry in modifying the Tandy SPL meter. I think if you play around with the search facility in this forum (try SPL/ Tandy etc) you'll come up with a thread on the Tandy meter which has info' and a reference to another site that has an extensive article(s) on modifications and compensation curves that is supposed to improve it no end.
If you don't get any joy soon email me as I downloaded it a few months ago and it's in a pile of articles up here somewhere.

Greeting to all the crew in the Great Southern Capital from the Smart/Sunshine/humid.....etc State. My last experience of Melbourne was about a month ago. We went down to visit the kids and my son and I went to the MCG for the Monday of the Test........about 14C and probably snowing at Hotham! Beat hasty retreat back North.

Hi David...Doooh! Re: earlier post. Don't put "Tandy" in Search as previously advised as it is probably listed under "Radio Shack" being from the US of A.
David Gatti
Cheers Jonathon - I vaguely recall the calibration articles you mention.
I just bought a AV receiver so it will be fun to do some calibrations.
kenny12
i picked up one of those analog spl meters for 20 dollars :)

was clearance item at dse bankstown, they seem to have plenty as well,

this was back in december though
Jonathan Bright
Dear Kenny12, Me too, but after all the trouble David went to running 'round Melb' I didn't have the heart to tell him they were on special nationally last year at 40% of what he paid for it now!

David,
Every audio magaine mention & recommend this RS meter but not one of them ever mentioned that they are not accurate at the lower frequencies. There are modification that would fix this. You should be able to find the modification circuit on this forum if you do a search on it. I believe the parts only cost a couple of dollars.
David Gatti
40% of the price.!!!!! &%$#$%

Anyway, did you guys know that Tandy and Dick Smith are now one and the same?
Jonathan Bright
Hi David. Glad to see you took the news so well!
Answer: Yes.
I saw the SPL on special in Dickies catalogue and went to their nearest store who said they were out of stock. They suggested the Tandy shop who were in the same shopping centre and they cheerfully handed over theirs for the price DSE was offering.

I can remember (1970's) when DSE were independant (ie run by Dick Smith) and they were then bought out by Woolies I think. May be that means Tandy is now Woolies too. By theway the Australian Woolies is not related to the big Woolies in the USA. Totally independant. The lcoals just copied the name I gather.
