Aurum Cantus G2Si Ribbon Tweeter group buy - Click HERE for Original Thread
DirkD
Hi there

Anyone interested in a group buy of Aurum Cantus G2Si tweeters? These are really stunning tweeters and I have located a company that is willing to sell them at $60 US each ($120 US per pair plus shipping from South Africa). The catch is that we are to buy at least 50 pairs at one time.

DirkD
DirkD
Just an update on the proposed group buy of Aurum Cantus G2Si tweeters. I negotiated a minimum order of thirty pairs with the company.

This is a very good tweeter. See the TJL project of Troels Graveson.

Your link is bad.

I could be interested in a pair or two if:

I knew how much they usually cost in the U.S.

I knew shipping charges to the U.S.

I knew of a link to an excellent 2 way project using these.
DirkD
Sorry about the bad link! Here it is again. You might have to cut and paste it into your browser.

http://home1.stofanet.dk/troels.gra...loudspeaker.htm

Also see Troels' comments about the tweeter and the TJL project here:

http://home1.stofanet.dk/troels.gra...oorstanders.htm

The tweeters retail for $89.95 in the USA at www.e-speakers.com and for more than 120 Euros each in Europe.

Shipping from South Africa is not expensive. I will get a definite quote on airmail shipping to the USA and report back.

I am in on a pair as well.
Bill Fitzpatrick
Well, the efficiency of that system pretty much SUCKS doesn't it? What a waste, a 96db tweeter padded down to 80db.

Does anyone know of any tried and true systems of about 90db?
DirkD
Hi there

Air mail shipping to Europe and USA is $50 per pair. Total price for one pair of G2Si tweeters - $120 + $50 = $170. That is less than the price for one tweeter without shipping in Europe!

D
Bill Fitzpatrick
So you say the price shipped to the U.S. from Africa is $170.

The price in the U.S. is $180 pair plus, say, $10 shipping.

So the savings is $20 per pair assuming that you could talk the dealer into free shipping.

Hardly much to get excited over, is it?
DirkD
I think that this is a really good deal for the guys in Europe and not in the USA. The saving is about 50% for people living in Europe. Now that is a substantial saving!

Try PHL. It is a great match to ribbons. Very sensitive, but more importantly almost fast as ribbon.

FYI a Dutch importer sells a sibling for 129 euro a piece (the RB60)

http://www.clofis.nl/nl/celeritas/celeritas.htm

Whats with the great price difference between the G2 and G2Si (or RB60 and RB70)?

(Btw I'm not really looking for tweeters at the moment).

Hi,

Can i get a quote on shipping to Singapore?
DirkD
I had an interesting reply from Troels regarding the sensitivity of the TJL loudspeaker.

"Well, the TJL has a sensitivity of 84-85 dB/2.83 V. What is shown at the website is only derived from a certain output level from the measuring system and also dependent on the amplifier that drives the speaker during measurement. I wasn't attempting to show the sensitivity here.
And keep in mind that most commercial speakers exaggerate the sensitivity by 2-3 dB. This is very often the case.
The TJL sensitivity is well in line with the 8545+9500 construction and the 2.5 clone.
However, a single 6" driver is never going to make a very sensitive system - that is if it also has to play some bass and the TJL handles well down to 40 Hz due to the smaller magnet compared to the W18EX001 driver with the large magnet.
I could make a speaker with 2-3 dB higher sensitivity from the W18EX001, but then the F3 would be 6-10 Hz higher. That's how it is."

Duck-Twacey

Thanks for the link. Yes, as far as I am concerned the RB60 is the G2Si tweeter and the RB70 the G2 tweeter. Check out this link for differences between the tweeters.

Airmail to Singapore on a pair of tweeters would also be $50 US.

DirkD,

Thanks for the quote. One more question, what sort of faceplates is available? I think there's the round, square and rectangular type in black and aluminum right?
DirkD
Hi there Chris

The G2Si only comes with a black round faceplate. The G2 comes with the round, square and rectangular faceplates.

Hi Dirk,

I'm not in a hurry, I don't think the other forum members are ider, correct me if I'm wrong :o
So take your time and wait untill you've reach the minimum you need to order and than we all will be happy ;)

changed my mind..

I'll take 3 pcs of these babies instead.

So add another unit to the minimum quantities in counting.

Anyway just out of curiousity... would there be a discount on
the G2 model itself if one were to add it to the rest of the G2si
group??

The answer would be yes. I can arrange a discount price on any Aurum Cantus tweeters along with this group buy. I will get back to you with a quote on a pair of G2 tweeters.

Hi Dirk,

Is it possible to get a square pair instead?
I prefer the square type.

Thanks,

Price for G2 ribbons if purchased along with the group buy is $110 each (compared to $179 from E-speakers) + $60 shipping per pair. Your choice of colour or faceplate shape.

Audiofanatic
The G2Si tweeters are only available with a black round faceplate. If you want a different shape you would have to look at the G2. See my comment to Irwin AR.

Hi , i hv a pair speaker with G2 tweeter , can i direct replace it with G2si ? thank
rjb
I'm in

Ross
DirkD
TJ
Yes, I don't think there would be any problem replacing a G2 ribbon with the G2Si. They have the same sensitivity, impedance and frequency range. The only difference is slightly lower power handling from the G2Si.

Ross
I will add a pair for you.

Dirk
Irwin AR
TJ may i ask why you intend on replacing your G2 with the G2si
version?

Is there anything that the G2 is lacking of ....

i'm still really curious about the difference of the two especially
when the price greatly differs.
TJ
Trwin AR , dont know what the diff . !!
DirkD
Hi there Irwin, AR

As far as technical differences are concerned, let me repeat the info on the A C website:

G2Si is especially designed for large-scale speaker system manufacturers.
G2Si is a high quality and compact aluminum ribbon tweeter and has an attractive price. It is the best choice for you to develop your new products!
G2Si is characterized by: owing to very light moving mass of aluminum ribbon and using N45 NdFeB magnet as guarantee, and it can get broad frequency response range and 96dB high efficiency. G2Si is not only rich in harmonic, but also natural and elegant in timbre. It is fit for all types of music playing, especially have excellent performance when playing orchestral music and striking music. G2Si has a good power-handling capacity and can ensure low distortion when in strong dynamics.

Technical data

Rated impedance: 6ƒļ
Rated Power: 30W
Sensitivity: 96dB/W/M
Frequency range: 1700Hz-40kHz
Dimension of aluminum ribbon(WLT)F8.5mm~60mm~0.01mm
Shape of aluminum ribbon: wave
Mass of aluminum ribbon: 12mg
Moving area of aluminum ribbon: 510mm2

Frequency cut recommended: over 2500Hz
Material of mounting faceplate: aluminum, CNC processing, surface with anodizing electroplating finish.
Dimension of mounting faceplate: ƒĶ110mm~T4mm
Outside dimension: ƒĶ110~D84
Weight: 1.05kg/pc

G2 is our one compact aluminum ribbon tweeter. It is perfect for use in two-way systems design or more than two-way systems design, and also can be used as a super tweeter to make up the defect of high frequency in loudspeaker system.

Technical data(Patent No.ZL98 2 46922.5)

Rated impedance: 8ƒļ

Ribbon shape: wave
Magnet: magnet shielded
Recommended frequency cut: above 2500Hz
External dimension (mm): 74W~120H~90D
Weight: 1.15Kg/pc

The Frequency response graphs on their site shows a somewhat smoother frequency response from the G2.

From a personal experience point of view I can tell you that I designed a small two way speaker for a local company using the G2 tweeter and it was absolutely magnificent. The G2Si, however is not far behind in terms of resolution and naturalness of timbre. The G2 can be crossed over at a lower frequency than the G2Si because of it's higher power handling. You can also use a lower order crossover with the G2.

The G2Si was developed to offer OEM's a ribbon tweeter for use in (for lack of a better description) mass market products. It is therefore very competetively priced in order to beat the competion from more traditional tweeter manufacturers. We as DIY'ers are surely the winners in this!

With the two pairs that Scott just added I get a total of 9 pairs (including a pair for myself and for a friend).

If everyone are happy to wait a little longer we can see how many are added in the next week or so. I am going to speak to the importer in the mean time to see if they would give us the same deal for a smaller order.

BTW I am going to build a Proac 2.5 clone with a pair of G2Si tweeters. I contacted Troels and he suggested a crossover that I am going to try. Anyone interested in the design?

Hi there
Just an update on the Aurum Cantus group buy. The supplier is prepared to give us the same deal for 15 pairs of G2Si tweeters asa for 30 pairs. Lets give it time until the end of next week and then start to finalize the orders.

The supplier also indicated that they would be happy to supply ANY Aurum Cantus drive units as part of this group buy. Feel free to enquire for prices.

I am going to try my hand at setting up a Wiki page for this group buy. I will post the link once it is up.

Hi Dirk,

For those who came in late.... ie me!

Is it still possible to add my name to the list for a pair of G2Si's?
I figure I'll need a spare set of ribbons to suit as well. (probably sooner rather than later) Can you please advise the cost of a spare pair.
I gather from reading the other posts that postage is $50USD to Australia.

Hope I haven't messed up your ordering too much.

By now everyone have been notified about paying for the tweeters that they ordered. I am hoping that all payments will have been made by early next week. The order for the tweeters wiill be finalised next week and they should be available for shipping out about ten days after that.

I just noticed this thread and find it quite funny that people are now trying to marry the Proac 2.5 clone with a ribbon tweeter considering that I proposed this concept some 2yrs ago using the Raven R-1 tweeter - only to be somewhat flamed at the time by the techie types who said it could not work!

My experience is that the 2.5 clone is MUCH MUCH improved by adding a ribbon tweeter, heading it towards Hi-End territory! So keep perservering with the Aurum Cantus G2-Si as the Raven R-1 certainly works for me ...the whole speaker becomes twice as good.

Regards,

Steve M.
DirkD
Hi there Steve M

I am very keen to try ribbon tweeters with the 2.5 clone. Thanks for your words of encouragement. I will post the results once they are done.

Maybe you could be persuaded to post the crossover design that you used?

Regards

Dirk
Steve M
Hi Dirk,

I'm no expert in x-o design but do consider myself to have good audio experience and keen ears.

The Raven R-1 tweeter I use is the older Mk I version with 4 ohm impedence. I stumbled across the 'right' sounding crossover point by accident really. I initially calculated and built a third order crossover thinking the R-1 that I had was 2.5 ohm (instead of 4 ohm), but in any case the speaker sounded very good with this first x-o. I then built a properly calculated third order x-o with a targetted crossover point of 2,800 Hz thinking this would be a good match for the 2.5 clone, strangely it did not sound very good (quite squawky).

I estimate that the original (slightly botched but good sounding) crossover for the Raven is crossing quite high at around 4,500 Hz. Although this would appear to be a mis-match for the 2.5 crossover point, it does nonetheless sound the best of the two. I much prefer the overall complexion of the Raven in the 2.5 clone compared to the original Scanspeak tweeter. The speaker has much better transient response, sounds faster, is more detailed and more audiophilish with the Raven added. That muddled midrange (in ultimate terms) of the the stock 2.5 diminishes significantly.

IMO, the smaller ribbon tweeters like the R-1 sound better crossed over high at 3,500 Hz ++. They are really better used in threeway designs being not so good at doing mid frequencies, where they can sound a bit hard and metallic. The bigger Raven R-2 (with better midrange) in the 2.5 clone would fill in the gaps nicely and sound awesome I reckon!

Lets not forget that the Proac 2.5 is an accomplished speaker sounding very musical, with excellent bass packaged in a room friendly size punching way above its weight. So these attempts to improve its upper midrange and treble by adding ribbon tweeters is definitely worthwhile, IMO ...

Regards,

Steve M.

I have been requested by some of the group buy members to post an update to (what has turned out to be a bit of a mission) the AC group buy.

First the good news. The local distributor has ordered the tweeters and they should arive in SA very soon. I will post an update once they have landed.

Now for the bad news. The payments from Scott and Irwin are still outstanding. As I have already committed myself to taking the tweeters this is cause for concern. Could the gentlemen involved please sort out your payments as a matter of great urgency.

Thank you to the determination of some of you guys for making payments. In some cases it has not been easy, but I truly appreciate the effort.

Thanks for the update Dirk, and thanks for putting the group buy together. I've already got a pair of these, so I know how good they are, but for those buying blind on reputation, you're in for a treat. As it happens I was visiting a fellow enthusiast in London yesterday who was playing me some excellent music through his speakers, which are pentagonal MLTL-48 enclosures with Jordan JX92S and G2si ribbons. Lots of detail, space and generally a very lively clean sound. It's almost a cliche, but they really did remind me of the original Quad electrostatics, but without the beaming problems. If anything the high treble is a little better than I remember the Quads, and the bass certainly goes deeper. Another advantage is that these do image depth, even though they were backed against a wall! I hope that's whetted a few appetites...

This is a serious bummer, since I mailed my payment months ago. I sent a packet of American Express Travelers Checks because no one else would send monetary instruments to SA. I sent them international express mail via the US post office. They might not honor the refund policy because I signed them twice not in front of the recipient.

I just hope we get something really good building with this tweets
and i couldnt thank Dirkd enough for getting this to work.

I believe this is quite a bargain we have here.

Just a side note to those UK buyers participating in this GP/GB.

I've done a few reading on projects using ribbons throughout
this forum and i found out that instead of using power resistors
to pad those extra sensitivity, the use of transformer based
attenuators http://www.sowter.co.uk/acatalog/SO...NUATORS_27.html is said to give better preservation of the reproduced sound for the tweeters due to stable power reduction and none
of those reduction in amplifier damping factor caused by resistive "L-pads".

Ofcourse there are those cheap ones available but i would be nice
if there are interest from our UK friends to organise a GP for
the SOWTERS.Just a thought if its worthwhile.
Luke
I missed this one. But if anyone pulls out for what ever reason , I would be interested in buying their ribbons:-)

Hi there guys

I am really sorry for the very long delays in getting the tweeters. It has turned into a real comedy of errors with some misunderstandings between the factory and local agents. Apparantly the tweeters were destined to be shipped via airmail, but ended up via a surface shipment. The local supplier, trying to passify me (I am livid by now as you can imagine) told me that the tweeters have arrived in the country thinking that they should arrive shortly. I have seen proof that the tweeters have been shipped, but I beg some more patience as they make their way accross the Indian Ocean on board a ship.

I would once again to thank everyone for their patience and please accepte my apologies for the delays.

Regards

Dirk

PS Hi there Irwin

I designed a little two way monitor using the Max Fidelity woofer for guy who wanted to market them. He bought the design from me, so I am not allowed to publish the crossover but I can give you my impressions of the woofer and tweeter combo. The Max Fidelity woofer is a Dynaudio clone, and souns like it. Excellent tight and deep bass for such a small woofer. It's very good clean and clear midrange and speed matches the AC tweeters very well. In my opinion it is very highly recommended, and I am surprised that so few people have actually tried it. Let me know what you think.

Thanks for the update Dirk.

Can you give an approximate date when they will be in your possesion? If they are on board ship now, does that mean another 4 weeks?
The reason I ask is that my project is being delayed, and I need to know when I can resume it and think about what I can do in the mean time.

Cheers,
Ralph.

Hi Dirk,
Nearly another month since Ralphs post, I've just noticed. How's that slow boat from India coming along? ;)

I've sent another email to Dirk asking for an update.

Maybe something will come of it.....

Cheers,
Ralph.

Hi there guys

I am sorry for not responding to any enquiries, but I was away on leave for a few weeks. Got back today and had a heap of e-mails.

I will follow up with the agent today to find out what is happening. Will report back soon. I am in the same boat as all of you. I also ordered and paid for a pair of tweeters and I am also waiting to finish a project. Very frustrating!

Hi all

Just a note to let you guys know that I have not vanished. I am however experiencing problems with my e-mail currently.

Unfortunately no news yet on the GB. The whole country is on summer vacation, so it is very difficult to get any response to my enquiries. I will however persevere and keep you informed.
