Cheers Dirk. Have a good Christmas. Let's hope there's some good news on the tweeters early in the new year.
Nordic
Dirk, hoeveel daai deng in rand?
My mom works in Paarl so no need for shipping..., I need to replace a tweeter on my monitor speakers, and being old, I won't just get one, so I need a new set of 2.

And yes, people, this time of year, its madness getting anything done here, from about the day after tommorrow it will start normalising. :devilr:

Any news, Dirk??
ralphs99
Hi Dirk,

What's happening?

It's coming up to a year since I sent you the money for the drivers!

I hope there is some positive news.

Please send a reply explaining the situation.

Cheers,
Ralph.

Sorry about vanishing for such a long time. My wife has decided that a divorce was in order and I have been sorting out the mess for the last month. Anyway, the good news is; NO MORE WAF TO WORRY ABOUT! I will follow up on the tweeters shortly.

I will have one extra pair of tweeters. Estimated Rand price of R800 per pair.

regards

Dirk

Hi Dirk

I am happy to pay R800.00 for the spare pair.

There is a phone number on my web site.
Toaster
Sorry to hear that Dirk- although that does seem a rather extreme reaction just because her tweeters haven't turned up...

Cheers Toaster!

So... Did the tweeters arrive? Final response is dated feb 2006.

I think we may just be being hopeful now.

C'mon Dirk, that's another month- this is getting silly. I'm sure we all respect the efforts you've gone to and your personnal difficulties at the moment, but we need some information on this group buy. We've really had nothing on this since the tweeters were supposed to be in the process of being shipped, many months ago. If there's a serious problem- and given the time this is taking, there is for our purposes- we need to know what it is. Were the tweeters actually shipped? Did the ship sink? Has your local dealer folded? Is the Chinese factory out of tweeters and yet to manufacture a new batch? We need to know! If you are still waiting for information at least tell us what you're waiting from and from whom. I'm in the fortunate position of already having a pair of these units, so apart from the money tied up and the general frustration of waiting, it's not a major inconvenience for me, but many of those involved with this group buy have projects totally stalled. Even if the news is no news please post an update.
All the best,
Toaster
ralphs99
Thanks for saying what we've all been thinking Toaster.

ralphs99
Well, it's now a year since I sent the money to Dirk for the tweeters.

Sadly, I haven't heard anything since he last posted here.

I tried sending a email through the forum, but doesn't accept email in this manner.

I have his email address however, so I sent an email directly. It bounced and I received a reply from the webmaster saying 'account is full'

The account is similar to other free email services, remaining active for 90 days. So at the moment it is still an active but he obviously hasn't looked at his email is quite some time.

Anyone else with ideas, experiences or comments?

Cheers,
Ralph.
tubenut
Not really.

If anyone has any more details as to who Dirk is, I could try contact him locally....
Toaster
I sent a message to Dirk a couple of weeks ago asking him to get in touch. This did not appear to bounce, but I've had no reply. Although the possibility exists that Dirk is too busy with his personnal life to respond, I think that sadly we have to proceed on the assumption that Dirk's mails have simply been prevarication and misdirection. No real explaination has ever been given of the long delay and I'm reluctantly coming to the view that we've been tricked, although I'd be delighted to be proved wrong.
Tubenut, Dirk was supposed to be ordering through a local distributor. Can you check who the RSA distributor is for Aurum Cantus and check if a large order is stalled with them or any local dealers who handle AC. I don't expect there's more than one distributor and there's unlikely to be many dealers either, so it shouldn't be that difficult. Another possibility is contacting iKobo to see if they can contact Dirk on our behalf or exert any leverage. It may also be possible to contact the Chinese factory to see if they're aware of an order to the RSA over the last few month, assuming they're inclined to tell us. Unfortunately I'm very busy over the next few days, but I will try to look at some of this stuff myself next week. Better yet would be if Dirk reads this and replies.

All the best,
Toaster.
Bas Horneman
Someone asked me to see what I could do because I'm a moderator and also happen to be a South African. I've just sent Dirk an email (which bounced : "account is full (quota exceeded") asking for an explanation.

Although diyaudio cannot be held responsible for the GB gone south. I will ask a friend of mine to track down Dirk to ask what the situation is and what can be done to salvage the situation. (I can't promise results and I can't even promise that my friend will look into it)
rjb
Any help at all would be much appreciated.

Of course diyAudio cannot be blamed, we go into these things with our eyes open, just trusting people are honest.

However I have been wondering if there is any way of improving protection, such as possibly a registration system. As it stands we are very open to scams.

Having particiipated in other very successful group buys, it would be a shame not to have them.
tubenut
I offered to help some time ago as I live in SA, but am Dutch born in Maastricht. How is that for trading places Bas....

Without a surname it is hard to do much. I bumped on to this GB thread after looking for an SA distributor for Aurum. I am not aware that there is one yet am involved in the SA audio scene on a daily basis...

It is not impossible that it is one of the small speaker repairer/recoiler people that has this agency but perhaps for drivers only, hence no press.

I am not sure where to start (which is why I have not) but I will ask the help of a moderator on a local DIY forum that mainly does loudspeakers.
Only found out about them a week or so ago.

How were funds sent to Dirk? Got bank details, names etc?
mgoedeke
Morning all

It would be best someone post/ send us the Bank Details, name used in correspondance and what not for us to track down this gentleman.

A case of fraud should be sufficient to get at least an explanation and hopefully something more out of this gentleman. Dirk, if you got the tweeters please let us know what happened.

Guillaume and I are concerned about this and I am prepared to try and help at least get an answer and hopefully recover some tweeters.

We will try and get hold of him and if there is no joy one could take it further.

Please e-mail me (my profile is on this webpage) and respond to me with Dirk's details. @Bas...lemme know if I can help save face.

Kind Regards

Martin
ralphs99
Hi Martin,

Thankyou to yourself and Tubenut's offers to help. Any help is very much appreciated!

The details of my transaction with Dirk were:

Transfer of USD 178.00 to Dirk Christiaan de Villiers.
Dated April 5th, 2005.
[account information deleted by moderator]
I ordered a single pair of tweeters with a pair of replacement ribbons.
Transaction Total including Ikobo costs USD 188.34

I'm not sure whether Dirk had the intention of defrauding people with this group buy, but I do remember a warning from Ikobo that the recipient was not a registered business (or words to a similar effect) and there was a greater risk if I proceeded with the transaction. Against my better judgement, and on Dirk's advice, I ignored the warning! Doh!

If there is some other way I can help with the investigation, please let me know.

I'll send a copy of my receipt from Ikobo to you Martin & Tube. It contains the same information I've given here.

Thanks again!

Ralph
Bas Horneman
Martin just mailed me and it seemed to us that we should compile a list of all those affected and the amount of tweeters ordered by each.

To start of with we can collect all the usernames and amount of tweeters ordered. We can then decide on the next course of action.

We found Dirk's telephone number and so I phoned Dirk. I asked Dirk to tell us how he was going to rectify the situation. He told me he would phone back. But I asked him to post here to tell you all.

The list so far:

audiofanatic 1 pair
dambrus 1 pair
ralphs99 1 pair plus replacement tweeters.

Thomas I've deleted your posts since this is not about setting up a GB because the participants have already paid.

Add me to the list.
1 pair plus replacement ribbons
$US188.34 in total of which $178 went to Dirk. Rest are transaction fees.

Good news you have made contact.

It's all quite simple. Google comes up with his name in the VinylSA Newsletter two issues back with telephone number and the yellow pages gives one his daytime work number (Possible private info removed by moderator). He is currently vying for the Agency of Prima Luna amplifiers in Holland under the agency name Vidivox (a storefront in Hermanus it seems) and is ordering in samples (as was I'd suspect the group order which could well have served the purpose of having other projects combined to reach an MOQ?, perhaps with those MaxFidelity units?), supposed to leave Holland very soon.

He is exhibiting at this years Sound & Vision Expo alongside avcables so there is definitely no lack of capital for him to conclude this deal with as he is also doing the marketing for a completely new product line and on hearing of the DIY Audio Fest in Pretoria claimed he'd fly up quite casually.

@ Dirk: you are welcome at the DIY stand with a DIY project, but only if you conclude this deal honourably, quickly and with good reason as to the delay. Why one has to go to such lengths to try and not make the South African audio community more ashamed is beyond me.

If not, I remind you that this forum is frequented by the Google bot quite often and some people might add keywords to it in a hurry if need be.

Please provide us with a complete updated status, even if it means that the stuff is sitting in china still. Also who distributes AC here in SA?
DirkD
Hi all. I can understand the fact the at you are all worried and unhappy about the group buy. I have not vanished. As I have explained before I have gone through a divorce recently and most of my time has been consumed fighting a custody battle that I would rather not go into here. The so-called agent for Aurum Cantus used to be a friend of mine. I have taken up the case with the local police force to retrieve the money. Please remember that I also paid for two pairs in good faith.

Being a man of honour and not someone to run away from my responsibilities, I have two solutions to the situation. First of all I vouch to personally repay all monies paid to me by anyone not prepared to wait any longer. Alternatively I am in negotiations with AC to get the tweeters myself. At this stage it looks as though it would not be a problem to get the tweeters. Whatever your decision, I will honour it. Please understand that it is going to take some time to repay everyone as divorce and custody battles are not cheap.

I will post a list of monies received and people affected asap. Please indicate your preferred action to be taken.

Just to clarify things. Yes, I am involved with a new company called Vidi Vox, but only as an employee earning a small basic salary. I do not have the capital required to start a new company. As a matter of fact I am currently flat broke.

I hope that we can resolve this situation to everyone's satisfaction and thanks for the patience that you have shown so far.

Dirk
mgoedeke
Hi Dirk

Good to see some communication going finally. As long as the participants in the group buy are happy with the outcome of this I hope things can turn for the better.

What really ticked me off is that there are people who try and build the SA DIY scene with lots of time, enthusiasm and love and incidents like this to me are a black mark against the efforts of us all. I was approached by disillusioned DIYers about this and am only trying to help things move along, perhaps a little quick on the draw. This should perhaps be a lesson to all involved wrt communication, breakdown of which can easily lead to very nasty situations.

Apologies if I misinterpreted your current situation. I will take up one or two things with you offline as to satisfy those who have asked me to help guide things to fruition. Where can you be contacted reliably?

Martin

Martin

It's brilliant that you have been able to get Dirk to post the above.
I, (and I am sure the rest of us) are most appreciative of your efforts, and of Dirk's explanation..

I hope what he has posted is true.

However at this stage I am not entirely convinced. He has made soothing noises before, some of which have not been true.

If he is genuine, he has my full sympathy. It is not nice to be in that position, and can totally take over your life, to the exclusion of all else.

Obviously there will be some delay in resolving this, whichever way it goes. Personally I would prefer the tweeters to the cash, but this obviously depends on what Dirk can acheive.

Lets hope he continues to communicate.
mgoedeke
The G2Si is really not that expensive a (super)tweeter wholesale and can be gotten for just about the initial asking price. It might be easiest for Dirk to register with one of the american distributors and arrange shipping from there, excepting he has means of sourcing them at significanty lower cost from China (the quantities aren't really high enough to negotiate much of a discount though it may help a little if he has the means to bring them in in one shot)

I don't know what the man is aiming for in terms of concrete time-frame. I will phone him up and find out what his plans are.
mgoedeke
Dirk has promised to post details about the GB in short order. He has a potential sample order lined up from AC.

He claims he was had by an agent but wasn't prepared to disclose the identity of said person. I do however feel in the intererst of transparency he disclose those involved as I belive some have lawyer friends in SA to assist as the nature of these dealings are fraudulent.

Dirk: could you please post case number and other contact information? Otherwise we'll just get tube_lover to do the background work and name and shame the agent.

Kind Regards

Martin

Thanks for your efforts Martin, they're much appreciated.

Good to hear from you Dirk- I'd pretty much given up on you I'm afraid. I did try to warn you how people would react if you didn't keep them informed! It really needs to be money for me, because I've recently got a pair of Founteks from Madisound instead. With those and the pair of G2si I already have, I'm pretty much all ribboned up now. Once you're in a position to refund we can discuss how to go about it. Paypal may be an option. If a refund is not possible within a sensible time I will (reluctantly) accept my original order of tweeters and replacement ribbons if that's easier and quicker. I expect they'd sell on ebay or on this forum easily enough. I would prefer a refund though...
All the best,
John.

Hi there rjb

I understand that you feel that I have been trying to buy time before. Please understand my embarrasment at what had happened and my genuine desire that things should work out as planned.

I am saddened that you would for one minute think that I made up my divorce to gain sympathy though. Just for the record, I have two beautifull sons aged 2 and 5 and I very nearly lost the right to see them regularly. I did not want to go into the details because I consider it a private affair, but if required I can furnish documentary proof.

I will inform you guys of progress and time frame for resolving this matter as regularly as I am capable. I will try to check in daily to find out what is happening and I will post the list of group buy members and money paid shortly.

If you want to get hold of me via e-mail I have set up the following e-mail address: dirk2006"at"webmail.co.za. Replace "at" with @ off course.

I have heard enough debtors in my time. When it comes to money and business one has to look at what FACTS are available and what is likely. Unfortunately this means a non-personal approach. It also means honesty is in the best interest of all parties involved.

I don’t think people are doubting (nor is it relevant to your obligations) the demise of
your marriage and the associated costs to yourself, moreover there is a lack of trust (meaning you have to play open cards and provide more than just assurances which in the past have turned out to be false)

Perhaps it is best you provide some documentation to allay some perceptions about this potentially being “soothing noises” (and not divorce docs unless you feel you want to)

I suggest you submit such to GB participants (Bas/ myself can verify such to members if you prefer doing this offline) to establish a factual base by providing copies of documentation regarding a transaction with an agent/yourself (an invoice).

You claim you were done in by this agent (an ex friend) and if the police are doing anything (as opposed to the sheriff or debt collectors) it must be of a criminal nature and by implication have an associated case number. A fraud via an agent is by simple implication relevant to GB members and they have a right to know what is going on because it is THEIR money.

With verified information the GB members could have more trust and from that base you can start making moves to rectify a situation. Some might have sympathy (or the financial/project stalling ability to wait) and others are probably livid and would love to add to the Crime-Stop intelligence database without delay (crimestop@saps.gov.za) but I hope that you can by your actions restore faith in these people and that they can forgive you.

Hi Dirk,

Thanks for getting in touch.

I'm in a similar position to John (Toaster) as I have since aquired some Ravens and don't really need the AC's anymore.

"Being a man of honour and not someone to run away from my responsibilities, I have two solutions to the situation. First of all I vouch to personally repay all monies paid to me by anyone not prepared to wait any longer."

If that offer is still open then I would also be very happy with a refund if possible. Paypal is good for me as well. Please let me us know when you think a refund can occur.

Thanks again to Martin and others in bring matters to a head.

Cheers,
Ralph

Paypal is not an option in SA.
Toaster
...which is why iKobo was used of course. I must be getting slow in my old age. Well, I did set up an iKobo account to send the funds in the first place so that could be used instead I expect.

Martin's right I'm afraid Dirk, it's a matter of trust. Although I understand you being upset that people might think badly of you, or wonder if you're telling the truth, you have to bear in mind how things look from our POV. I'm sure everyone in the GB would like to assume the best, but sadly we can't afford to do that uncritically given the reality of the last few months. I do wish you all the best with the fallout from your divorce and hope this GB can be wrapped up soon to everyones satisfaction.

In SA paypal is now available to make payments to folks, you can however still not receive payments via paypal in SA.

Paypal fees are much lower than a bank issued cheque (and buying at the bank's rate AND registered mail), may I suggest registering now so that you can unlock your account? Also the transfer is instantaneous.

The Bank issued cheques might be an option for those who don't have paypal, bit personally I recon Paypal is much simpler/safer.

Hi Dirk,

Sorry for your problems. Unfortunately this project has fallen off the radar screen for me, so I would like a refund eventually. Paypal is best.

BTW folks I was wondering, IKOBO wanted me to fax a photocopy of my passport or birth certificate to sign up so I didn't. Funds transfers from the US proved almost impossible by normal methods, Western Union, my bank, and the Post Office would not transfer money to SA. Is scamming that bad?
Lee1234
How do the Fountek tweeters compare to the aurums, Toaster?
Toaster
I don't know yet Lee. As you probably know, there's two flavours of Fountek, the JP series and the Neo series. According to measurements on Troels Gravesen's site the JP3 seems to be virtually identical to the Aurum Cantus G2si and uses the same kind of corrugated aluminium foil diaphram. The Neo CD3 tweeters that I bought from Madisound use a flat 'sandwich' diaphram that Fountek don't seem to expand on in their literature beyond saying that it uses a reinforcing layer, or some such. The mass of the Neo ribbon is about twice that of the JP3 or the G2si. See http://www.troelsgravesen.dk/TJL_2W...eoCD3%20version Apart from making the diaphram more robust, it probably reduces distortion by providing some damping of diaphram resonances. Measurements on Zaph Audio of the larger Neo CD2 http://www.zaphaudio.com/nondomes/ would seem to suport this. Sometime in the next few weeks I'll get around to finishing my Selah SA-1 kits and we'll see how the Neo 3 does.

No, well I really hope not. I believe it actually has to do with SA banking laws that are really strict in terms of needing a banking licence before being allowed "bank type" transactions in SA.....

Nigeria on the other hand is scary....

You can buy these at PartsExpress, in the USA for around $85.00 ea. (1-3 units) or $75.00 ea. (4 or more units). If you live in the USA the price will probably work out to be close given the cheaper shipping.

Hi there

Time for another update. My apologies for not having refunded anyone yet as planned. As I told you guys previously, my car broke down just as I was in the process of selling it and the bill came to about $2000, money that should have gone to group buy members. My car is still being sold, and I hope to get a good price for it to make up for the repair. I want to reassure everyone taht I am comitted to refund every cent owed as quickly as I possibly can. In the meantime I will do updates every few weeks or so, unless there is some immediate good news. Thanks again for your patience.

ShinOBIWAN
I'm amazed at the patience from all of you guys.

As an impartial reader of this thread and also without being absolutely clear on all the details, I'd say that your likely being had. Frankly its difficult to believe its been strung out for this long and with such a varied array of 'disasters' along the way. Here's the main excuses I've seen used in the space of over a year:

they've shipped
they've arrived in SA
they're on a slow boat to SA
I've been away these past few weeks
my wife divorced me
my friend stole our money
I'm broke so can't pay you back
I'm getting a loan to pay back
I'm selling my broken down car to pay you all back

Complete lack of evidence regarding an order for the drivers, shipping info, crime number related to the incident with his friend, nothing offered to support the divorce claims(despite offering).

Time for a reality check, read those back again.

Can you not submit complaints and report a crime to SA police authorities and provide Dirks details to them? It really does look like the only option now.

Should Dirk wish to not be the sole bearer of responsibility for this crime which has and still is taking place then he'd be wise to give up his ex-friend who stole all the money initially.

Guy's I really hope you get your money back but it may be time to escalate things to the relevant authorities.
Irwin AR
Thanks for jumping in Shin.
Hope its kind of a wake up call for others in the GB as well

Somehow i feel as if i'm the only one giving reminders on this
issue.Maybe coz it affects me more as i've paid for 3 units
of G2 amounting $420.......well.. i don't know..

Sad this is happening in diyaudio.

In case anyone living in SA who've decided to proceed with the
authorities just let me know.

As my payments were made via Telegraphic Transfer, i have
with me Dirk's banking details including his residential address.

Wish i don't have to go that far.

Rather hear what others have to say.

Hi Guys,

You are not alone in this group buy and still waiting for Dirk to pay us or send the ribbon's.
I've had e-mail contact with him in the past but sinds, I think more than a year, nothing but some posts on DIYAudio.
What can we do about this? This is taking so long that it's not common anymore to think that Dirk is gona pay us back or send the ribbons.

So Dirk, I urge you to tell us within a few days (one week max.) what you are gona do about this or we'll go to the SA police authorities to clami our money and interest back or the unit's.

So this is your last chance Dirk, don't make us go to the SA police authorities, tell us when you gona pay us back or send the ribbons.

It's up to you now!

I'm amazed at our collective patience as well! But it's difficult to apply any pressure from 10,000km away!

I agree that we need to begin some type of procedings against Dirk now. All hopes of avoiding this outcome appear to be lost.

Can anyone in SA help contact police or suggest a way of going about debt recovery?

Cheers, Ralph

Dear all,

I think that I'll go to a debt collector soon to get back my money.
I'm willing to spent a few $$ to try to get the rest asap from Dirk.

This DIYAudio member is getting away with this if we don't do something about this.

I hope a Moderator can do something about this, other wise I hope that other members are willing to go (together) to a debt collector to claim our money!

Please let me know what you (other members) think about this!

I've had it with this Dirk.

Best regards,

I haven't forgotten about this, but I'm having a rather trying year. My wife has been in and out of hospital and I've been trying to finish a course.
Considering the length of time involved and the staggering patience shown by diyaudio members I'm pretty much sickened by Dirk's behaviour. I wanted to give him every chance to sort this out but he's clearly been prevaricating all along hoping it would go away. Well it won't. In a couple of weeks I'll be free of serious commitments and intend to persue this. I would still prefer Dirk to show some class and backbone and sort this out- but being realistic there's clearly no hope of that. Wretched, cynical behaviour. I'll put it more bluntly: It's theft, pure and simple.

Anything new about this super fast group buy?

Have we given DirkD a pile of money for nothing or is there still some faint change that we might actually get our tweeters?
ShinOBIWAN
I can't believe this is still going on. I posted here a year ago and its now been two years since people paid for these tweeters from Dirk.

I feel for those involved, what a mess.

Hi ShinOBIWAN,

Please, take it easy, I can imagine how you feel, I'm in this also.
Let's just keep our head cool and act the way we get the best out of this!
Just don't get personal, you'll risk getting banned or sinbined for a long time.

Let's think of something and perhaps together we'll think of something and finish this ones and for all!

Dirk, where are you? What's your plan? How are you gonna fix this mess? Act now or you'll have many    forum members.

Think twice and fix this mess you create.

Its been over two years since folks paid and just over a year since Dirk visited the forum.

I think its safe to say that the only satisfaction your going to get out of this isn't refund related.
