Nice Stereophile article on Nelson and First Watt - Click HERE for Original Thread
dw8083
Art Dudley in January 2005 Stereophile magazine has a great article on current source amps and the First Watt F1. Look in the Listening column on page 43.

Great picture of Nelson as well. :wiz:

Hindu Love Gods ?

I just knew there was something about the Pass guy !
mrothacher
I like the picture of NP...

Dave, I think you should just sit down calmly, take a stress pill, and think things over.
dw8083
Sorry, I didn't get the stress pill part.

Happy New Year,

mrothacher
Sorry...

Obscure reference to HAL 9000 in 2001.
dw8083
Damn, I get it finally... That is funny. :)

I always said Nelson looked better with his beard. Had more character! (Not sure he appreciated it when I said it first. :)

My wife likes the shave. Nuff said.

Mine too Nelson, but that didnt stop me. Then again, I am a man whose age and IQ just passed each other going in the opposite direction.

lumanauw
Anyone has scan of that article?
jh6you
Scanning? We probably should respect the copy right.

In my case, going-down IQ is just a shame, but, going-down SQ is a real pain! My wife is getting more power over me. :smash:

I just want to see NP without mustach
grataku
Nelson,
I like the shave as well but even more so the inside of the F1. ;-)

Not sure how many of you are old enough to remember a popular Disco record producer named Giorgio Moroder. He had a few albums on his own as a singer and some collaborative efforts too (lousy singer but successful producer/ composer), He did most of the Donna Summer hits in the 70's.., Some freddie Mercury titles, some with Human league. Famous for his "From Here to Eternity".

He recorded the first live to Digital album in 1978 called E=MC2, That album he did was produced by Harold Faltameyer (Axel-F fame) . When talking Oscars and awards... Giorgio have so far recieved three Oscars, four Golden Globes, three Grammy Awards and has over one hundred platinum records to testify the artistic prominence of the musician who launched Donna Summer and to the quality and appeal his music have had to the audience during the years.

He have received awards for the soundtracks of Midnight Express, American Gigolo and Flashdance.

For any Giorgio fan out there: this URL has good info: http://www.disco-disco.com/tributes/giorgio.html

I am sure Nelson listened to him just because of the Sci-Fi connotations that Giorgio loved to carry:

Point being, Nelson resembles Moroder in that Moustache.
K-amps
Another Pic.

I like Moroder too...

Didn't have a chance to read an article, will have to wait till it becomes available on soft copy....

Last night i had a nightmare:

Nelson Pass was performing with ZZtop, and the boxoffice already closed.

Recovering from the dissapointment i noticed i just missed the listening session of Giorgio Moroder on the F1.

All pictures of NP that I have always have mustach. Does the one in StereoPhile do not have mustach?

This is a coinsidence or what? John Curl is also said to be looks like a singer (but I forget who)

Are audio designers have their twins among singers:D

The one in Stereophile has the moustache and some fur in the sides, but nothing like the lates 70's early 80's! ;)
lumanauw
I remember a slight. John Curl resembles Barry Manilow?

Let me guess : Willie Nelson ?

Let me say first I love Shotgun Willie, so no disrespect meant...

Few people still breathing could be confused with Willie Nelson.
jacco vermeulen
Thats what they said about Elvis !
Clarkcr
Come on!!! Lets see the picture of First Watt already!! As for the picture of Nelson: the image of him standing in front of his electostatic speaker in an ad from an 80s ad will insure Nelson Pass stays forever young in my mind.

His excitement and gleem is that of a proud father.

I see John as Randy Newman - he looks like him, embodies the
dry, acerbic wit augmented by huge talent and intellectual
capacity, and even sounds like him.

hmmmm... Come to think of it, I've never seen them both in the
same room at once.

I search for Nelson Pass, John Curl, Charles Hansen photos at event like CES (when they are busy watching something, or when they are chatting, or when they are standing infront of power amps). But I cannot that kind of photos. Where can I see that kind of photos?
jacco vermeulen
Attention, fellow portrait hunters :

Skip Rio, go straight to Alabama.
Mr Curl will be spending his holidays in Birmingham !!!!!

btw:
rumor is that after september 11th, the town Arab in Alabama became the number 1 city in the US

I have look at NP's picture at the website.
There is "General Amplifier Inc." name showed up. Is this the replacement for PassLabs?
GRollins
I believe you'll find that to be an umbrella that Nelson started in Nevada to cover First Watt.

Grey
Nelson Pass
Yes, for the record, FW is entirely separate from PL.
lumanauw
There is Threshold company, founded by Nelson Pass. Then NP goes to PassLabs. How about Threshold now, does it still makes amp? Who owns it?
Nelson Pass
I have no idea.
Stuart Easson
According to a review posted on the threshold website (www.threshold-audio.com)

"The company begun by Nelson Pass in 1974 had fallen on hard economic times and operations were temporarily halted, but the company name and designs were resurrected by the principals of speaker maker Nova Audio."

I have no idea who Nova Audio are, but at least for now threshold wasn't assimilated by the harmonborg...

Stuart

FWIW, here is the article.

The link abve is to the 2nd page of the article. Here is page 1. Sorry about the confusion.
stefanobilliani
So, The F1 is a - five - P channel mosfet circuit ...,

is it correct?
Nelson Pass
After I left in 91, the company apparently did not do well under
Gary Hudson (with the technical assistance of Michael Bladelius).
After losing enough money, Dynatech decided to sell it, and it
is my understanding that Harmon came around and kicked the
tires. Interestingly, they were not interested in an offer from
me, and sold it to Ed Woodard for about half as much.....

I just read the 5 P reference as well. The F1 owners manual clearly shows N channel parts for the gain transistors. The CCS's can be either way but it would seem likely from a prts counts point of view that the upper CCS's would be P and the lower one N. The article does claim the MOSFET's are of more than one type.

Graeme
GRollins
Hmmm...perhaps I should offer to buy the company. Wonder what would happen if I offered them the contents of my wallet?

The positive current sources are P channel types. N channel
types work as well, but require a more complex bias circuit.

Anyone can figure out how a configuration like F1 (a differential) can make F2 with 2nd harmonic domination? A differential in itself will cancel 2nd so makes 3rd dominant.
