6ar5?? - Click HERE for Original Thread

I just aquired another Akai RTR and assumed it had the same amp in it as the last one I got (really a Roberts). Rather than a 6BM8, this one uses 6AR5s. I cant find much on them as to their fidelity, and the trannie puts out 250V, which I think is too low for a 6BM8. The OPT look like the same 5K as on the others.

Is this a decent tube? They are both shot so should I just use a different tube that will use 250V and if so, which one (6L6 maybe) Both the power/output trannies are in mint shape.

thanks amt

250V is fine for a 6BM8 amp. Other possible tubes could be the EL84/6BQ5 or 6V6/6AQ5.

I don't know anything about the 6AR5.

6AR5 is a 7 pin pentode, equivalent to octal 6K6. 6AQ5 is a much easier to find replacement, though its pinout is slightly different.

Thanks for the responses. I re-read the 6bm8 specs and see now that there is a range of voltage operation which also varies depending on the operation mode. Im still pretty green as far as tubes go so nothing seems to be obvious.
