It was going to be an Aleph 3, but it ended up with 17.5 volt rails.
MikeW
Thanks to Nelson, Jam and George for the extra parts.
MikeW
Fairchild output devices, 350VA victoria magnetics 15-0-15 , 36000 uf. , .2ohm, 36000 uf. per rail. It sounds very nice. Bias 1 amp per output.

Nice job Mike,
What speakers are they driving?

You should try to make some slightly better pictures and send them over to PassDiy.

/Hugo :)

Very nice! I like your wood front panel...warm, reddish tone. Warms up the usually cold-looking (but warm to the touch) metal chassis:)

Nice Aleph Mike!

Is it made on MiniA boards or ??
Zapped
Looks like the heatsinks are taken from the old Heathkit amp that dates from the 70's; same ones I used on my Zen4. Mine work great on the Zen; how do they do on your Aleph ?:smash:
MikeW
I gave away all my mini boards. If eveyone I sent them to builds an amp you should see quite a few. Someone was nice enough to send me a set of Brian GT boards.
I am driving some little Cambridge soundworks speakers along with mini-pipe-o.
The heatsinks are only 40 deg. This amp will see more work before I am finished with it.:smash:
I built five Mini-A's and kept the one I liked the best. Some Aleph P's next and maybe a PLH after that.
eLarson
What type of wood/finish did you use?

Mike,
Looks great! Interested in hearing how it sounds. BTW, what is a PLH? Is it a crossover?

That is a beatiful piece of wood, you used for the front plate.

What Fairchild-part did you use for the output?

Steen.
MikeW
The front is Cocobola with teak oil. The outputs are FQA19n20. I had a bunch left over from another project.
The PLH is another amp. It is a variation on the JLH. The guy that is working on it is very busy so it could be a while before it gets done.
George, thanks for the parts. How is the Green Monster working?
:D
chris ma
May be that is the one and only LH enhanced version?

Nice to see you are out of Texas.:clown:
jam
Mike,

Anyone that uses Cocobola for a for a front panel needs to be sent to Texas.........:D :D :D
jacco vermeulen
What about people who are unable to pronounce Cocobola ?
MikeW
Jam, how long does it take to match MOSFET's in N.C.? Going on 3 months now. Are you every going to finish that amp?

Cocobola is Poisonous if inhaled. I won't send you any because I know you will try and smoke it.:clown:

See you in Texas.:D

It is working great. It gets pulled out of the closet and listened to for a few days about once a month. It is richer and rounder sounding than my Le Monstre.
I keep waiting for KK to release his mini AX boards. That is my next mosfet project.
A Krell KSA-50 clone is planned also.
For some reason I bought a Forte 1A. Have not hooked it up yet. If it does not work well with the Lowthers, the chassis will come in handy.
I spend more time dialing things in than building. Seems six months is needed to get something where I am happy, then the boards get yanked and something else goes in the box.
I need to send the Green Monster to a good home where it will get more attention. Getting out of the closet once a month just is not enough.
You are a real amplifier building machine. And I know this is your season for cranking them out.

I hope you're talking about my project. I would be unhappy if
somebody else was building the PLH.

I am.
I didn't want to be a name dropper.:devilr:

Mike,

Nelson Pass is not another "guy" he is refered to as the Master or Mr.Pass and in some circles as god ,with a small 'g'.

You are tempting stray bolts of lightning...............:D
jacco vermeulen
I saw a picture of God, he is not green.
So, you are welcome to ask him for a drink !

I think that would be Cocobolo...of the rosewood family. A hardwood with really nice reddish tone mostly used for furniture and woodworking tool handles.

You are right. Also for Amp front panels.
I have another piece for the PassLH.:D
Blues
Where did you get them Mike? How much per board(size)? Always wanted that wood for front panel.

Thanks Mike for e-mail and eLarson.

Nice Job MikeW..

I am currently building a Aleph 30 or something like that. I never built an amp but know a thing or two about electronics and metal/wood. I am also 'North of Boston'. If I run into a snag I can't get out of could I consult w/ you? Email (or other) I will be nearing completion sometime in the summer of 2012 in my estimation.:xeye:

Marc
MikeW
No problem e-mail, call, or come over. I always have an extra amp or two if you want a demo. :D
:santa2:
eLarson
Is PLH another name for The Monster, or another project? (One to be published?)

Mr. Pass liked the JLH when he listened to it. He has a couple of ideas for upgrades. Great minds think alike, so I have no idea what he is going to come up with.;)
I know I will build one.:smash:
jacco vermeulen
Mr Pass likes way too much.

With his seven easy pieces he got me ordering a GC from BrianGT,
i am so embarrassed.
Is it possible to change user names ?
eLarson
Very, very cool. I'm already accumulating the parts for a JLH.

Well SIR,

How is the PLH coming along? The soldering iron is getting cold:(
Nelson Pass
Variac has donated a Hafler chassis, and I also have a donated
Adcom 555 chassis so that we can make this a nice upgrade
project for those of you with these in a closet somewhere.

It's simmering on the burner, but I suggest you build something
else while you're waiting. These things take months.
MikeW
I am saving some heatsinks. What voltage rails? I'll start building the power supply and chassis after the A-40.
Nelson Pass
At the moment, there are several versions, but they all
allow parallel output devices, so the choice of wattage is
arbitrary. The first version will undoubtedly have a single
rail supply, and from that and the fact that it will be have
the efficiency characteristic of a conventional Class A amplifier
swinging rail to rail, you can calculate the approximate power
supply.

or those of you with these in a closet somewhere.

There must be thousands of these around. That will be a great service to the Diy community.

If Nelson doesn't decide to sell boards on his website, I will coordinate a group buy in gratitude for getting my amp upgraded. Er, Nelson , you ARE going to sign it with a marker, right?
GRollins
Months, eh?
At the rate I'm going with the Monster front end, you'll still probably finish before I do. I've only managed about two hours total on electronics this week.
Bummer.

Grey
Nelson Pass
I don't have any problem doing a front end when Casey and
Dave finish the power supplies and output stages. It is my
intention to have a modular front end that will drive the system,
and this is the most interesting part of the project, as I have
maybe 8 circuits or so from which to choose.

MikeW
It has been months.
I'll have to give Big Paul from OCC to come over and give you the size 12 is the ***. :clown:
Nelson Pass
I have a wife for that, thank you, and I don't see how that
will impact Casey and Dave.

Variac

but they allow parallel output devices,

So I guess if you have 2 Haflers ( a surprising number of people seen to ;)) , you could rig ea. one up as a monoblock with twice the power?

I was referring to Grey. :devilr:
You will have to use your own size 12 on Casey and Dave.
GRollins
Et tu, Brutus?
Trust me, I've got a lengthy list of things I want to get done, but at the moment I'm spending the vast majority of my soi-disant free time doing farming related things. Got to get all the little veggies started now that freeze time is past. I'm also in the progress of building my daughter a play dingus out in the yard, but that means that I've got to plant grass, which means I've got to...
It's never just one thing. My life is a series of domino events, one keyed to the next. Once I get involved in something it invariably turns out that I've got to back up and do six other things before I can do what I originally set out to do.

Grey
MikeW
If you run the cooling pipes from the Aleph under ground you could plant earlier.:hot:
