Dipole without a lot of space behind - worth it? - Click HERE for Original Thread

I'm in the serious planning stages for a pair of dipole W-frame subs to go with my Jordan Jx-92's... They'll be driven off the sub output of my 5.1 amp with a 80 Hz cutoff, through a 1/3 octave equalizer, and put underneath the Jordans. Used for both HT & music.

I'm thinking of either Pyle Pro PPA15's ($40 each, free shipping!) or Custom Audio IB15's  ($100 each, $70 shipping :bawling: ) for the dipoles. Problem - the enclosures will have to be at least 20" cubic, and when I measure out where the speakers will go, I don't have a whole lot of space. Maybe 6-12" behind the subs max, and they'll be boxed in on the sides by the stereo cabinet & other furniture. :dead:

I know, I know - dipoles need to be away from the wall. But I don't have that option.

--> So am I better off just going with a pair of monopole subs, right underneath the mains? They'd have to be small (abt 1.5 cu ft). I think I've got some options there.

--> Will a pair of monopole subs help me with room modes (as opposed to a single sub)?

--> Am I wasting my $$ to even think of dipoles?

Thanks.

If I had any experience with dipoles, I might be of more help. Since you are using W baffles the front of the baffle would be 20 inches plus the distance from the rear to the wall away from the wall. Is there any reason you cant move the dipoles away from the mains? I have heard two seperate subs can help with room modes if placed properly. You're certianly not wasting money to think about it, just dont buy the drivers until you're sure it will work.
