I am looking to organise a group buy from a supplier of these modules which would mean that we will get them somewhere around the $AUS230-260 mark or even cheaper!!!
Anyone interested please express your interest here.
The only reason this is aimed at Sydney users only is due to the fact that I will need each individual person to pick them up rather than shipping them(because they weigh a lot)!! |
|
|
| D_GR8_1 |
I just confirmed the price for this module, and if we purchase 4 or more the price comes down to AU$205.
Now that's cheap!
I have seen this module run TWO subs (MTX 12" & JBL 10") and it still had more power than the subs could handle. |

Damn that’s a good price; can I ask who your supplier is?
I already have one of these amps but just out of interest have been watching them on eBay, and lately they have been sell from about $200 to $230 (+ $30 shipping) just in case anybody out of Sydney was looking for one.
Good find D_GR8_1 :) |
|

I’m in Melbourne and could be interested in two. I come to Sydney (my old home town) sometimes, so freight is not an issue.
I wonder what’s the lowest ohms it will handle? I'd guess about 3 ohms?
Jye I may look on eBay as well – what’s the make & model.
And have you compared it’s sound to any other amps (not just plate - eg a 200 w home theatre amp)?
Cheers

So this is Jaycar stock-code AA0508.
There site states for 4 or more, the price is $305 –that’s 33% off!
Are you getting trade prices?

I'm curious as I'd like to use this to power my forthcoming small bass guitar combo-thing as I have a tiny preamp and PS for the onboard electronics and building the amp into the back of the enclosure would make it very compact. It won't be run that hard as the speaker is 98dB.
I wonder if the filter can easily be bypassed?
For that price it's a worthwhile gamble though. |

Good price there, Brett!
I had a look at these, but I couldn't go with the 6dB of boost at 35Hz. I'm going to go for the Rythmik Audio 350W special edition instead - which is $199 + about $44 (slow boat) postage. Works out to around $320 in Aussie dollars.
Rick, I don't know whether they would offer a discount for multiple orders, but I could ask.
Sorry if this is a little off-thread, but I haven't seen many Australian group buys and I thought a word of congrats was in order. |
|
|
| D_GR8_1 |
Yes guys, these are trade prices.
However I found out that we have to add GST to the final price so $205 + 20.50 = 225.50. Still not bad though.
Everyone that wants one could you please e-mail me at
zok1@iinet.net.au.
Thanks.
Rick, the JAYCAR stock code is correct.
And if you do come to Sydney, when are you planning on comming next?
Once again, email me if you are expressing interest so I know for sure. |
|
|
| rick57 |
I see the Rythmik Audio amps have caps (though 27000uF isn’t a huge amount for a sub), I wonder if Jaycar amps do? They’d definitely be useful.
Brett,
The Rythmik do seem better. What have you heard about these amps/ why did you choose them?
I think the benefit in going from 250 w to 350 w is unlikely to be really noticed. I think it would be better to put money into the optional Linkwitz Transform add-on board.
Will have a good look at the site etc tonight

Just checked e-bay and there are two guys selling them.
1st one retails at $389.00 for BUY IT NOW
AMP
Second one is Auction.
Either way you look at it for $225 these amps are a bargain! |

| Guys I'll probably decide within 20-24 hours. |
|

| D_GR8_1 |
The Jaycar amps have
4 x 6800uF = 27000uF. |

My apologies D_GR8_1,
I called you Brett in my post. Sorry. |

Its OK.
How much would Shipping Cost from US to AUS for these modules though?
At 17lbs = 7.5kg I bet shipping would be close to AU$100.:bawling:
Lucky for you Cloth Ears you live in "the land of the free" while "down under" we have to settle for what we get!
:D |

It depends on how long you're willing to wait...
Surface mail for 20 pounds is about USD$41, airmail for the same package is pretty close to your guess, about USD$91. If you get 2, then it's $67 for slow-mail and $167 for quick mail. As the weight limit is 44 pounds for USPS you can't get any better options unless Rythmik have a pet International courier. I think Brian, from Rythmik, has an id on this forum.
As I spent quite a few months waiting for some drivers from Nick at Lambda when they were running, I think I could probably afford the wait, which is supposed to be 4-6 weeks (although from my book buying expliots, I've had stuff arrive in less than 2).
I did ask Brian about 250v/50Hz power, and he said that the module was switchable (I think it's the red switch on the lower right of the back panel). He also said it should be able to drive a 3 Ohm load - I'm going to have 2 x 6 Ohm speakers wired in parallel, so I thought I should ask.
P.S. Yes, I do live in the 'land of the free' - Melbourne, to be exact. It's just that the price of freedom is expensive... |

"The Jaycar amps have 4 x 6800uF = 27000uF"
That wasn't on their site - do you have access to more complete specs? If so, can you post the extra info here
Thanks |

Actually I called JAYCAR and one of the salesman checked for me. :clown:
Cloth Ears -> For some reason I thought you were from the US, that's why I said "land of the free"! :D
As for the Rythmik amps, I dont tend to buy products where you cannot claim warranty in AUS. It becomes tedious. My friend bought a GForce Ultra 6800 from US and he was shipping it back and forth for warranty purposes. |

i can vouch for the quality of these plate amps. they are pretty decent.
mr joe rasmussen uses them in his critical Q sub, and there is a page on how to change corner frequency and turn off boost if you so wish:
http://members.ozemail.com.au/~joer...amp_changes.htm
there has been a few changes in the later models since, and there are now 4x6800uF caps on board as mentioned above as opposed to the original two. i would also upgrade the "bell wire" cable that goes from the board to the remote control front panel.
i hope i dont mean to be rude, but i have two of these in their original boxes, tested but never used, for sale here in Perth for the same price. they weigh 7kg in their boxes so postage would be around $20. but obviously if you live close to sydney that would be the best option.

I just spoke to AUDIO AUSTRALIA about these amps. These guys are located in MENAI, SYDNEY.
I managed to negotiate a deal if we purchase 4-5 amps at $200 inc GST plus shipping, which would be another $3-4 per amp.
So come on guys, start showing a bit more interest! |
|
|
| rick57 |
Jye
The prices on ebay have (with only one recent exception) been higher than this current offer, of only $200.
:) |
|
|
| rick57 |
D_GR8_1
It's a good deal, but one would do me at this stage.
Have you contacted the Audio Clubs around Australia, eg
Sydney - ASoN - Eddie Lee at (02) 9874 7424 or 0411 835 828
I'll pass on to the Melbourne Audio Club.
What suburb in Sydney do you live in?
Cheers |
|
|
| D_GR8_1 |
I live in Bexley.
I havent spoken to these Audio club guys, I am just trying to organise this to fellow audio enthusiasts on this forum.
I have a 10" JBL GT410 sub fully built sitting in my room nothing powering it, and I am eager to get it pumping, so I want this amp.
But it seems that if I dont get enough interest over the weekend I might just proceed with a single purchase! :bawling: |
|
|
| rick57 |
I maybe could have my arm twisted to take more, if it helps the price – I have a few systems in progress.
If not, what is the $ difference if < 4 amps?? |
|
|
| D_GR8_1 |
Hey Rick,
well 1 amp goes for about $260.
2 or more about $235
4 or more $205.
Although if we get 4 or more I do feel I might be able to negotiate a lower price, around $190 perhaps. The guy I spoke to was a friendly bloke! |

I'm waiting on an answer back from Jaycar to this:
(Although the Q on the 240 is for a separate project)
"On the 240 W sub amp, what's the total:
- power supply caps uF value; &
- VA of the transformer (This is available for the other sub amp on my shortlist)
And the 350 W sub amp: what's the VA of the transformer?"
FYI: The 350 W from Rythmik (more $) has a 600 VA transformer.
Cheers |
|
|
| rick57 |
D_GR8_1
Jaycar don't know VA, are contacting the supplier overseas. If it's close to the Rythmik unit, I'll most likely take 3.
I learnt that Jaycar amps use mosfets - probably better than bipolar transistors.
:)
Can you wait? |
|
|
| vazzy |
Hi Mate,
I'll be interested in one if its around the 200 dollar mark. |
|
|
| rick57 |
If someone is prepared to post mine, I'll definitely take three - then we’ve passed Critical Mass!!
 |
|
|
| D_GR8_1 |
rick57 since you are in Melbourne, then you are better off just calling up Justin at Audio Australia and negotiating a deal for 3 amps and I beleive it will cost around $30 to ship to Melbourne.
It will be less hassle than for me to order them pay for shipping, then ship them off to Melbourne. You will be paying for shipping twice that will be around $50. Its just not worth it. |
|
|
| rick57 |
D_GR8_1
I'd save a 2nd freight, but probably lose a quantity break, as would you and vazzy.
If you don't mind that, I'll contact Justin on Monday
Cheers |
|
|
| D_GR8_1 |
That's fair enough.
I already ordered one amp for $230 inc freight, so $20 more however much less hassle, I dont really mind.
It makes you wonder though at $200 they are still making sufficient profit
What about Jaycar? What a rip-off!!!
Vazzy, mate, if you are still interested in a single amp at $230, drop me an e-mail! |
|
|
| rick57 |
IMO, while I like low prices, if they sell them for $399? they’re making a good margin, but any electronics parts business probably sells a lot of things at a small $ margin, with a lot of handling.
They probably need to have some lines they make an easier profit on, especially in a modest market like Australia. |

I wish you guys were doing this about 6 months ago! I have used this amp and found it to be fine. I'm running 2 Jaycat 10inch titanium drivers in series for 240w no worries. I was going to change the boost cicuitry using instructions from the web, but when I opened it up things looked to be too different. Anyway, after building it all, I did some SPL testing and found that the boost worked in my favour. Graph at http://www.users.bigpond.com/bcolliso/blast.htm for anyone that interested
I've built subs with each of the Jaycar amps (80w 150w and 350) and they've all been good. I'll keep an eye out on this board for next time!
good luck with the bulk purchase

Great look – I can see a bit of Newcastle in it. ;)
Have you done any comparison of the Jaycar amps with other brands?
What Hz do you cut off do your main spaejkers
How are they for *music?
Cheers |
|
|
| Collo |
GDay Rick57
I haven't had experience with any other amps as the Jaycar ones are the easiest I can get to in Newcastle - I do get about 10% discount by showing past receipts.
As for crossover freq. - I use them mainly for Home Theatre, so I just feed the sub LFE only and let the fronts deal with the full range. My amp (Pioneer VSX-D711) has a min. xover of 100hz which is too high anyway.
I've done a bit of response measurement of the sub and the mains to arrive at this arrangement - see http://www.users.bigpond.com/bcolliso/SPL-response.htm - I would be interested in getting feedback about the methods I've employed.
If I realy want to get some thump from music, I can tell the amp to let it through, but I haven't optimised levels for that.
regards

Hi Collo
I am *not the best person to comment on your methods (tho' they seem fine to me), but to get feedback, perhaps describe them a little more and start a new thread . .
