I tried posting this in the power supply design forum, but my post didn't seem to register, so I figured I'd post here.

I've recently aquired a new panasonic sa-xr10 reciever, which has basically the reference equibit board in there. I've been doing some research, mostly reading posts from brian brown on psu options. I was thinking about using sla's to power the main amp board on this reciever. I would use four 7ah sla's in series for a total of 48v powering the amp section. When I was searching around ebay I came across this industrial powersupply, Traco Power TSL480-155PX.

This unit seems to have nice specs, and aqequate amperage at 48v. Most of all, it would cost me about the same amount of money if I bought this unit or if I bought sla's and a charger. I know that sla's may become harder to find after 2006, so my question would this powersupply work? Thanks in advance.

The panasonic sa-xr10 uses an onboard DC/DC converter to regulate the dc-supply level for the amplifier stages, this then acts as part of the volume control. You can therefore not add batteries on the output of the DC/DC-converter.
The DC/DC-converter has rather low output impedance and is well regulated, so adding batteries for the input would not give any benefits.

Adding soem extra good low ESR caps on the output and input of the DC/DC-converter could perhaps give an improvement.

optimizing the clocks in the SA-XR10 would give you mutch more improvement, but is then also more difficult

all the sa-xr have a special volume control : digital from -72 to -40db , then voltage-based volume from -40 to -10db ( 5V to 40V ) , and then digital again from -10 to 0db
With a battery , you will have only -72 to -40db volume i guess

The major improvement i've noticed with my Panny 45 is to replace the power Supply caps behind the outputs FETs (Panasonic caps are renowned to sound bright )
In my case , i've replaced these caps(1000uF/50V) with BlackGate 47uF/50v that i've soldered under the mainboard and put a big 12000/63V Elna on the +40V rail between PSU and mainboard

Hi Kim. Any hints as to how one might optimize the clocks? I own an XR50.
