Best Value 8",10" or 12" Driver - Click HERE for Original Thread
cj.9
I just received 2 of the AudioSource 30009, 180w sub amps.

I would like some ideas for the best value drivers to match.
The intent is one for music and one for a small HT setup that will use the TB W3-871's for the mains and surrounds.

I would like these to be 2 really nice sounding subs but keep the cost as low as possible.

Thanks
:)

Any opinions of the following :

MCM 55-2421 8"
Quattro 295-550 10"
Quattro 295-555 12"
Dayton 295-490 DVC 12"

TIA

FYI,

These dipole subs have four 8" TB woofers per side in a W-Frame configuration as described by Linkwitz.

Let me know if you would like more pictures,

Why do you insist on building one for music & one for HT.
what i would do is build 2 identical subwoofers, place them in the corners behind the main speakers, and use them for both music and HT. I think that this way you get better quality for both music and HT, at the same price as building two seperate subs!

hi,
forgot about the driver question.
two very popular drivers at a reasonable price are Adire Shiva, and NHT 1259. those are good for music and HT.
wouldn't go with something that's less. you already have the good amps

agreed.

The one for HT is for a friend.
The one for music is for me.

Do you think any of the one's I mentioned come close to the Shiva or NHT?

I'm afraid the amps I have are a little underpowered so I was planning to build the best budget subs possible.

Even if you've got small amplifiers, you can build something loud. Just buy a high efficiency driver, something like a Maelstrom! ;)

For music 8": Intertechnik MDS08
For HT 8" Tangband W8-740c

Both can be used in very small enclosures and are modestly priced

For 10 and 12" there are a lot more possibilities

A bit to big :)

Can't seem to find the intertechnik in US?

May I ask where else can I get a TB W8-740C other than from CSS? Thank you. :)

This is where I ordered the W3-871's.

Has anyone here used the Quattro's?

Thank you, cj.9. The price from Acoustic Tech seems comparable to CSS's (except maybe the shipping is less).

The Quatro woofers are popular with the home theater guys. People like the 15" Quatro with 250 watts. They should all be quite passable subwoofers for most applications, including yours.

I've used the Quatro 12" and 15" in ported enclosures, I really like them. I'm actually going to use my 30009 with a ported Quatro 12".

If you want to go REAL cheap, you can get the Dayton 12" Shielded DVC. That will put out some good bass for the price.

Hi,

Maybe you should consider Seas 8" aluminium?

I completed a sub with Seas L22r4x (or something like that) few weeks ago.

I put it in 22liter closed box with 120w diy amp and XO with L-T. transform.

I can recommend it for a music sub. The sound quality is excellent with real deep punch. Although it is not a SPL monster but freq. range is flat from x-o point to 30Hz.

I am going to use it with 3" TB fullranges as well.
