Lower cost transformer? - Click HERE for Original Thread

Please pardon my noobieness for asking this...

I am building my first amp, but it must be on a budget. I need something around 24VAC@7A and I am having a hard time finding a transformer for less than $80-$100us. Can anyone recomend something cheaper?

I am wide open on design... dual secondaries, single centaped, EI, touroid, etc. I just need to find one that will supply enough power to run a 60ish Watt stereo.

I have done a search that returned hundreds of results but many threads are very, very, looooong and wander off topic a bit. Any help would be much apreciatedIs that a word?

I'll leave this one for somebody living in the USA to finish voting and tell you where to buy a transformer.

But in the UK, which is usually more expensive than the USA, we can get a 160 VA transformer for around 32 USD!

The last trafo I (custom) ordered was a 2x22V 528VA (12A:eek: ) dual secondaries toroid.
Cost was around 60 Euros, including transport by post office.

Lately I've been salvaging trafos.

So....
When you say 24VCT do you mean 24-0-24? As in two 24V windings.

Or do you mean 12-0-12. One 24V winding with a tap in the center?

Sorry if I'm being dense but I've seen both ways called 24VCT.

Hey Steve, do those transformers have hum at all? Looks like a great deal!
dangus
Amateur Radio swap meets can be great sources of parts. I picked up some new-in-box Hammond transformers, and a broadcast grade audio transformer. for a couple of bucks each.

If you arrive towards the end of the day, hang around the garbage cans because a lot of guys will dump stuff rather than cart it home.

These transformers came out of Harmon International
which is JBL, Infinity and others from one of there
discontinued amps and they do not have any hum as
far as I know. ........ Steve @ Apex Jr.

Awesome, you'll probably be getting an order from me sometime soon. :)

Yes.

Pardon my confusion...
I though a transformer rating of 24 VCT means that you can get +12, ground, and -12 from it (unrectified). So is it actually +24, 0, & -24?

If this is true, that would be a lot cheaper for me. I'm making a lot more gainclones.
Apex Jr
Transformer that 24 Vct is 12V - 0 - 12V
Steve @ Apex Jr
FBsHT
If you want 24V - 0 - 24V you better clarify with Steve @ Apex Jr because I believe he means 12V - 0 - 12V when he says 24V center tap.

12-0-12 is what 24v center tapped is. Dual 24v rails are two 24v rails.

@Steve: Do these transformers have dual secondaries "underneath the wrapper" like on many center tapped transformers?
Papageoff
Well that clears up some confusion.

Thanx
Apex Jr
I'll catch up before I go on vacation...
The transformer is set up as a 220 V input and will
deliver 48 Vct and a 24Vct at 7 Amps........
Using 115 Volt as an input you will get 24 Vct
12V - 0 - 12 V and a 12 Vct 6V - 0 - 6V also at 7 amps
as secondarys...Oh.. I should let you know they
weigh 10 lbs each ....... Steve @ Apex Jr.

two questions:
1. With a transformer like this one, is it possible to combine both secondaries to get a higher voltage (i.e., 12 + 6 = 18)?

2. If not, how does a gainclone sound running off of a 12-0-12 transformer?
