Has anyone used a widescreen LCD to make one of these projectors?

If you have which lcd did you use

Search on Lilliput and 1600SW and you'll find plenty of them used before.

Lilliput, Xenarc and a few other brands have 7" panels that run at 800x480 and the 1600SW is a Silicon Graphics workstation flat-panel display with an outstanding picture and 1600x1024 resolution (especially considering it's several years old).

Many more choices out there...

Thank you im looking for a regular sized lcd somethign lilek 17" or bigger. Im worried about being able to adapt the lcd to take input from composite or svideo.

Any suggestions?

How are you guys modifying the monitors to accept regualr video inputs?
bodgy
most people use a "vga box"

can you elaborate or tell me where to get a "vga box" Ive been looking for a commercially available converter but they are pretty expensive

Bodgy,

I saw you went down the panel and projector path. Are you going to stick with it or are you going to have a go at the more complex one?

I guess we probably have a bit of a disadvantage down here sourcing parts?

Good to see its working for you.

Cheers

I'm gonna stick with my panel as a lcd, but make a more DIY box to hold it, some decent lighting and good lenses. If I'm happy with the way that goes, I might get a higher res panel. This is all when I get $$ though... at the moment I'm pretty happy to enjoy what I've got. For a uni student, Ive got a pretty bloody big tv.

Yeh its definately more of a challenge down here, but everything can be shipped, it just takes time and money.

Bodgy,

I am just about to give it a go as well. The thing that scares me is that I will get a svga panel worth 2/5's of ****** all and Customs are going to put a big whack of import duties on it.

I'll let you know how bad they stung me.

Cheers

Goeman....no import on Lilliput from http://stores.ebay.com/Extreme-Audi...genameZl2QQtZkm was shipped from Hong Kong recieved it via Fed-Ex to ma front door in 4 days. Sourcing parts in Oz is indeed more "challenging" for sure, = the lamp and control gear is readily available the rest has to be shipped. I have just been informed by several glass suppliers that front surface mirrors arent available in Australia! They didnt even know what they were lol... I was told no mirrors are even produced in Australia they are all imported! If you have trouble finding the lighting gear though flick me an email i bought a 250 watt HQI lamp, lamp holders, ballast ignitor and capacitor for a tad over 200 bucks.

HiLLBiLLY,

thats great.
the $200 lighting, did you source it from a grow shop?
HiLLBiLLY
qwark..no mate apparently lamps from grow shops aint suitable so i have read... I think Atkins Carlye (Blackwoods) is Australia wide company I know they do have them I however obtained them from an Industrial lighting supplier in Belmont called Pro-Lamps http://www.pro-lamps.com.au/ they also have branches in NSW and Qld they suppled me with a 250watt HQI-TI Osram lamp and control gear, I got discount for cash GST was also wavered :-) I got change from $210 the guy actuall threw in the lamp holders for nothing lol

Thanks mate for the help. I will check out pro lamps but if don't have any joy I'll happily take up ur offer.

How far along with ur pj are you?
HiLLBiLLY
Bout this far and this far depending on which projector we look at lol
HiLLBiLLY
and...

(don't mind the pie...again...it's an ongoing joke i have with Ace...poor fella can't buy good 'ol meat pies in Spain and is hanging out for one hahaha)
HiLLBiLLY
knocked up this lightbox also out of 3mm aluminium for the top projector..has since been painted and stored in the cupboard for future use...shelving the first projector in favour of the straight design due to not ordering a front surface mirror when i ordered the optics from Ace and not being able to obtain a mirror locally... will finish it in a few months, have several mates wanting projectors so will have Ace packing up some more gear for me in the not too distant future will grab a mirror for myself then and finish the first projector off :-) Will start a thread with pictures etc when im a little further along with the construction...have been taking alot of pics as I go.

Hillbilly,

That is awesome. Its shaping up already.

Cheers
