Proposed Diy Video Section Rules - Click HERE for Original Thread
verbose mustafa
Every one here probably knows the basic Diy Audio Forum rules.

No personal attacks or bullying.
No offensive language.
No thread jacking.
No posting of safety endangering information.
Etc.

These rules are pretty basic to any forum and really are not specific enough to the diy video forum. I suggest we work together to setup a general set of rules for the diy video section of Diy Audio. One of the main problems I see is the fact that new people interested in the diy projection hobby come to this site and think that it offers very little information up front. They want answers fast, so make a post about a 150” big screen or what ohp to choose. More likely then not, they are not helped and their thread simply is added to the useless pile of posts. I’m in no way blaming theses people because without them, there would be no Diy Projection hobby. I think what we all need (even people who have been here a while) is a good set of ground rules that apply specifically to the Diy Video section. I’ll post a few of my ideas and encourage other to post theirs. Hopefully we can all come up with a final draft to submit to moderators.

1) Search first then post – This is by no means ever going to work. I stared the “Things newbie’s should know” thread which turned into “questions newbie’s should ask” after a while. What I suggest is one thread entitled something like “Newbie’s post your questions here” where anything goes. When you’re new, sometimes things get confusing. This would be an ongoing thread where any question no matter how trivial goes and will be the only place on the forum they will be answered. If someone starts a new topic about a trivial subject that the moderators feel has already been well covered on the board, the original post will be moved to the Newbie’s question thread as post and not a new thread.

2) Advertising – I have noticed a bulk of the posts out there are advertising. While there is really not much a problem posting some items you have for sale, the forum is being clogged with these, as well as “wanted items” or “I can’t find this in my country” threads. These should be in a separate thread dedicated to the topic if not a piece of software that could be added on to vbulliton that would be a full functioning classified, wanted, and post your eBay deals section (much like that on http://www.thesamba.com). While I doubt that the management here at diy audio will install a classified section to the site, a dedicated thread should be started and enforced. Any new treads posted that are selling items, wanting items, or posting eBay deals should be moved as posts to a dedicated thread.

3) Categories – I’m starting to think this will never happen, but if it were to, my advice would be to archive and lock the current diy video forum to it could be accessed and researched, and start from scratch with the new categories.

These are a few problems I see here on a daily basis that by implementing alone would cut down on the forum mess and help out newbie’s because their questions would actually get answered. I’m sure many of you have ideas so please post them and maybe we can make some change around here for the better.

here here!

this place NEEDS categories, not 20 stickys.
and noobs will be noobs so its a good idea to give em a place to do it.

Including a sticky about creating Sub-Categories, started about 9 months ago, LOL.

we dont need anything that complex. just a few categories for the most discussed topics.

Newbie
LCD's
Lighting/Ventilation
Constuction
Optics
Results/Show of your Project
Misc.

how hard is it to do? if its been talked about for 9 months someone should get round to it soon then?

We will be doing something about this within the next 6 weeks.

Some people are very retentive.

Why do we need rules - sub categories etc. This is a message board, not a website. It is open access on the internet, anyone has the right to post whatever question they want, and in my opinion it works best that way.

If you put things into categories, maybe someone might not see a post that interests him/her as they didn't think that it would be useful to look in that category.

Maybe someone asking if people know where to find a widget in Australia might be advised by a US member that actually you can use a sprogget instead of a widget, and spoggets are avalable all over the world. - but not if the post was in an "Australian" section.

A strong impression i have from some of the more long serving members of this site is that they want their own private club, and although they say newbies are welcome, really they're not.

I would add that this isn't true for most of the experienced diy'ers as I see them quite often offering help. Just a shame that people can't just take what is on offer and has been successful for several years, without trying to mould it to their own image.

PS - as a 9 month old thread exists on this topic - doesn't this new thread in itself break the suggested rules? Not a great start, but I suppose most law makers suffer from this problem.

there isnt gonna be an australian section... perhaps we need to start a widget/spogget sub forum though?

widgets and spoggets aside, I think that someone who is looking for info on lcd's and for some reason looks for this in a lighting section and doesn't find anything of interest probably wont be capable of completing a diy project anyhow, so thats no great loss.

Hi, someone DEFINITELY needs to MODERATE threads around here, its so hard to find info. I read threads and then they go way OFF TOPIC. I come here for INFORMATION, cold hard facts and I do like to read POSITIVE posts with HUMOUR, but my main reason for being here is INFORMATION.

I should probably put more effort into my first post, but I am tired and some not so bad looking girl is MSNing me. :)
