Hi All,
you may have heard of the Stevens and Billington TX102 Transformers. A pair of these, a decent rotary switch and some quality connectors will enable you to construct a very nice passive preamp.
I have been in contact with Jonathan Billington and the prices for each transformer is 135 GBP plus VAT and delivery. If we order 10 (i.e. 5 preamps), then the price drops significantly. A further price-break is at 20 units (i.e. 10 preamps).
I will email prices to those who sign up on the WIKI as interested - get to it through "Everything Else" or by clicking here: http://www.diyaudio.com/wiki/index....+Group+Purchase . I would like to be discreet about the exact discount that I have been offered. Because I am not VAT registered, I do not know about sending products outside of the EU. If VAT is paid in the EU, then I believe that the transformers may be sent without further duty payable.
Please list your name in the WIKI, and the number of transformers you want. I will consider adding other Stevens and Billington products to this page - let me know if there is anything on their website you wish to order.
Cheers
Jon :D |

Having read the bent audio website, they state "the tx102 is custom made for Bent Audio using exotic OCC copper winding wire and continous cast high purity copper output leads. "
They also mention a silver wired version.
Which version are you planning for the group buy?
thanks Simon |

| Hi I am interested in 2 transformers and I would also be interested in high quality switches if they do them, (like those uses in their preamp). |
|

Hi All,
I have emailed Jonathan Billington and asked for the price premium of the silver wound 102s. The OCC copper used in the Bent 102s is supplied to S&B by them - I have asked if the performance of the copper used in stock UK 102s is comparable.
I was planning on the stock version -- reviews are very good (I've found 3 on the net as downloadables).
I have not yet looked at sourcing Shallco or Seiden switches - can anyone give me a steer towards a competitive UK or EU supplier??? With the USD to GBP exchange rate, it might be worth looking at a US supplier and ordering individually.
Let me know that you think. :)
If you need a hand adding your name to the WIKI, give me a shout.
Jon

John, interest is already at 20 excellent.
I think the switches used in the "Music First" preamp are Elma but I dont know where they come from or waht the prices are, I havent been able to find them on the web for UK supply. |

Elma have a good reputation, but I haven't tried them myself.
I'll keep my ear to the ground in the meantime.

The wiki already reached 22 units and my feeling is, there is more interest coming...
Is there the possibility of another price break, for example at 40 or 50 units?
Jon, could you please ask Mr. Billington what he can offer to us? |

If you can get hold of the October edition of the UK magazine "Hi-Fi News" it has a review of the Music first passive pre amp which is made by S&B and based on the transformers which are the subject of this group buy.
Its clear from the review that this preamp is very very good and this GB could enable DIYers to make something with similar performance at a fraction of the price. The Music First Preamp is about £1500 in the UK.
Hi-Fi News states in the summary that this preamp "warrants the very strongest recommendations possible" |

First, the review is available here:

Secondly, while superficially identical the stock TX-102 supplied to the DIY Market and the ones used in the MF Audio passive preamp differ in some ways, not hugely but notably.

I have been in email contact today with Jonathan Billington. I have asked what the price differential between the copper and silver-wound versions are - so I can gauge a price/performance comparision between the two. Kuei, have you an opinion on this - knowing your close work with S & B?
I will keep an eye on the WIKI to see how we are doing - and will, when we get a little nearer to 40, ask where the higher price breaks might come. Might need to consider a cross-channel point of contact to distribute the goods. One other thing - as VAT is paid in the UK, no further duty is payable in the EU. I have had enquiries offline from folks in the US etc, and suggest that they contact the S & B North American distributor (available from the S&B website at http://www.stevens-billington.co.uk ) to see if they can arrange a similar GP across the Pond. For those of you in non-EU countries - please be aware that you may be liable for duty according to your National legislation. I am not a customs expert, though!!
I'd appreciate someone setting up a decent (Seiden, Shallco, Elma) switch GP to run alongside this one. I'm going to use the Cardas connectors I set aside for my AX project on this one  .
More info as it comes.......

That is very interesting, could you say a bit more about the differences? S&B did not make this point clear when I was in touch with them a few weeks ago about a DIY project.
Do you have a feel for how a DIY passive Pre would compare with the Music First Version? I am hoping to end up with a very good preamp. |

As with all things some of the sound is in parts and some is in the rest. I have had several versions of the 102 in my system, they generally are all more alike in sound than they are different and drastically different to most active and passive preamps. The rest, maybe in the region of different capacitors or valves, you finetune sound to a specific goal with the choice, yet the fundamental sound remains there....

Hi All,
I was on the phone with JB yesterday sorting out an issue that was, frankly, of my making  .
Suffice to say, we are on track, albeit with revised pricing. I will send a detailed explanation to those on the WIKI sometime today.

Hi All,
I am afraid that I have some bad news.
S & B have had to inform me that, due to existing distribution agreements, they, reluctantly, are unable to complete this group purchase.
We are all very disappointed, but there is no way aound this particular problem.
Please accept my sincere apologies for raising everyone's hopes of getting hold of these well-thought-of trafos at more readily affordable prices.

PS I will mailshot this dist-list tonight, and will mod the WIKI. |

Hi All,
thanks for your patience! :) These things happen - JB did his best for us given the circumstances.
I have spoken with Sowter and explained exactly what I was after (GB discount to DIYAudio members) and they said they could do that (post to one destination, though and I don't know about the VAT thing - I could ask in a few days when I have the time).
However:
6+ units = 10%
13+ units = 15%
25+ units = 20%
I was looking at the 9395 model on their site - I'll want to do an in-depth comparison of specs with the 102.
Anyone got any feedback on the Sowters?
Cheers
Jon :) |

Hi Jon,
The 9335 and 9395 have an almost identical specification but have different ratios. Would it be best to pay a little extra and go for the 9395 and have multiple ratios (1/.5/.25:1) or save the cash and use the 9335 with its straight 1:1 ratio?
cheers |

The Souter product looks interesting I see they have a passive pre pictured at the bottom of this page : Souter Passive Pre However this is just a single input and dual mono, I would want a switchable stereo version preferably with balanced inputs.
I wonder what switches they are using? I would also like to hear any info regarding any pre's built using these transformers.
Its a real shame that JB has withdrawn from the GB, I am not sure who his distributers are but it does not look as though they will gain anything from it. It just means that S&B will sell less transformers. |

I’ve not heard the Sowter examples, but i remember reading a review written by Brian Cherry a while back. He compared the Sowters, S&Bs and the Audio Consulting Silver rocks. Brian seemed to like the Sowter very much, and there considerably cheaper than the other two.
| quote: | | I would want a switchable stereo version preferably with balanced inputs. |
You can configure them anyway you want. Balanced input-balanced output, balanced input-unbalanced output, unbalanced input-unbalanced output, etc.... |

Hmmmmm, similar? Put a pair of these next to pair of S&B. You will see how similar they are.
The fact that the specifications seems similar (to a point) may be related to the fact that I specified something very much like the 9335 many moons ago (around 1999 or so) to Sowter, at the time organising a group buy on the Joe-List and for the London Life DIY HiFi Circle, which fell through as Sowter insisted in making something different which we did not want (see among others the Jan/2000 LLDIYHFC Newsletter). Funny to note that a year or so later the 9335 appeared.... Well, bygones.
Anyway, have fun, but make sure you do compare carefully.
Some people who did commented here:

(I believe that is the "review by Brian Cherry" that someone summarised rather curiously)....

A hint. The S&B Transformers are shipped to HK, taxed there, exported and re-imported with Tax/Duties as kit.
An option may be to agree with Brian Cherry a price for the the kits in a GB where the S&B transformers ship directly from the UK, thus shortcircuiting duties etc and given that $ 550 of the Kit Price is the S&B's you may be able to arrange a nice deal that way and the import from china would be for only $ 300 per Kit....
Just a thought.

The Django isan idea I like a lot for obvious reasons: it's a full kit & makes things simpler for us). Maybe someone who has a long-lasting contact with Brian (hint, hint:devilr: ) could consider doing the first contacts and put up a good show about this GB. We're looking at 17-18 (s/one signed the wiki for 2-4 trannies) Djangos IF everyone agrees to this product (and depending on price of course). I am willing to give the Django a go.
BTW, the $850 is my quick calculation based on the $800 kit asking price + transportation to the EU. Hopefully a GB would give a good discount on that Which brings me to pricing:

I have spoken with Sowter and explained exactly what I was after (GB discount to DIYAudio members) and they said they could do that | As the wiki's already for 32-34 units, we'd be looking at -20% in the Sowter case. I.e. GBP 86,63 (base price) +VAT= 101,8 -20%= 81,5 per unit (about 118 euro, each).
Of course the question remains: do we want the Sowter or the Django -- in other words, does the price differential (chepaer Sowter) justify the sonic differences, such as they seem to be? |

If we decide to go for Django, another possibility to make things easier is to involve Robert Bastani who should be a reseller of DiyHifiSupply kits in Europe.
I am not associated with Robert except for being a customer (I have built the excellent Prometheus system), and I could ask him if we are interested...

Well, the Sowter are not bad at all, if you get the ACTUAL 9335 design not one of the later "simplified" ones. Given that I am familiar with these and with all versions of the S&B I can say that in my own system the Sowter lack both the resolution and the bandwidth of the "worst" S&B (MK II) and are less good building a 3-Dimensional Image.
The Review in HFN was of a MK II equipped Box, the current MK III (which was the one measured by MC but not heard by AH) is a notable step up from the MK II, almost as large as the difference between 9335 & the MK II, to my ears in my system.
So, the essential qualities of a TVC are represented well by either transformer, the S&B are basically "Ultra-Fi" compared to the Sowters "Good Mid-Fi". Or in other words, you do get what you pay for. If cost is really so much an object that it has to be cheap first go Sowter.
Sayonara
PS, disclaimer, I have peripheral involvement with Music First Audio, S&B and DIY HiFisupply (meaning I occasinally give a little advise, I know the people involved pretty well etc), but I will not get to see a red penny (or a free transformer or a free Kit) if the GB goes Django/S&B and will loose not a penny (or not "get a free transformer" or not "get a free kit") if the GB goes Sowter, take it as you will with this caveat. |

That's a good idea -- but maybe also contacting Brian Cherry as Kuei suggests would be opportune?
First of all, however, is there a similar interest for the Django?
As an indication, my quick cost estimate for building the passive is around ~160-200 quid /250-300 euro max for box, switches, connectors, etc, PLUS the attenuators. In this respect, a good discount from B Cherry/R Bastanis would make the Django quite competitive
(Of course this estimate assumes purchase of all components/box required, while most us probably have some of these at hand already...) |
|

TL, thanks for that very informative post. I am most interested in the highest fidelity but others may not be. The Django looks very attractive and I had looked at it before and rejected it because of the cost (the same with the Music first which I would love) however if we can get a very good GB deal on the Django I may well be interested in that.
This has mde me think would S&B be interested in a GB for the Music First? or possible a Music First kit ??? |

TL said that Sowter is in "good mid-fi" range, with which I can hardly agree.
As regards the transformer group buy, it would be best if someone from the group, whose credibility is thought by the rest to be unquestionable and judgment unbiased, could get test transformers from both manufacturers, compare them and then take a purchase decision for the entire group.

You may wish to put them side by side in a reasonably resolving system to make the comparison. It is quite illuminating. I can only comment on what it sounded to me, in my system.
Note, I am not saying the Sowters are bad, on the contrary, the upper Mid-Fi range contains a lot of excellent gear which merely falls short in some areas or a little overall, sort of like Stereophile Class A and Class B. Much of the Class B stuff is "upper Mid-Fi".

That makes sense, although I wouldn't like to hijack jonclancy's wiki. Maybe Jon himself is game for this.
Otherwise, and since it seems probable that a euro GB for Django would ultimately end up with R Bastanis, maybe one of us living in Germany would be willing?
I could do the initial mailing myself, but as I'm based Athens, it would mean added transportation cost (I'm also not quite sure how to get the payment thingy right...).

One good kit with Sowters | Interesting. The kit costs 580 euro vs. the Django at ~667 euro+vat, etc. BTW, your own pre looks fantastic and labour intensive! I had considered using relays instead of switches -- but at 4euro/relay + cost of remote control, that option quickly put me out of budget. |

Hi All,
Firstly, feel free to alter the WIKI - that's the whole idea of it! :D
I think some really good ideas on this GB are floating around - nice one.
As for me, I was wanting the TX102s as components as I have a prototype I want to develop over the next few months. I am interested in finding some high quality switchery for a decent price, but the Django kit might be too complete for me (if that makes any sense! :) ).
However, the idea of using an EU-based distro does have lots of merit (and perhaps a parallel GB with Bent Audio for those over in the US) - it sorts out the VAT and Duty issue for a start.
Time to do a bit of surfing to follow up the links I've been sent (many thanks!!).

I have a Bent version of the S&B Tx102 MkII available for anyone interested. Never used. Can ship in same box it came in. I'm thinking $435 for a pair including shipping in US. E me if interested. They are not used because I opted to spring for the newer version when it came out, since I hadn't gone through the work of doing all the soldering on my original unit yet.
BTW, for those looking for a Shallco switch, you can buy them directly from Shallco. Go to their web site at www.shallco.com.
They will also do custom orders. For a volume control, you may want to ask for a lighter spring. |

Jon |

....news from Brian Cherry.
Brians is offering a one-off deal which allows most of us to avoid duties, and reshipping expenses.
As Brian notes, this is a "one-time offer": neither Brian nor JB wish to upset dealers -- but hope to widen the scope of this product through those of us that accept.
TX102: Twenty (20) pairs minimum
Very important: Cans shipped to INDIVIDUAL destinations, EITHER from the UK, OR HK!! So, this doesn't have to be a "EURO" buy any more...
Seiden switches also available, shipping from HK.
The deal is somewhat urgent (for obvious "dealer" reasons mentioned above)
Jon's wiki had reached 17 pairs.
1) Are we all still interested?
2) Any more takers??? We'd need a minimum of 3 more.
Cheers,

No need to say sorry :)..I find it a flaw in the interface. You have to click to allow to be mailed...and then still click to make your email visible...which makes it appear as if your email address will be visible to all. Which is not the case. It simply makes the email button visible..heh..heh...hence my remark that it is confusing...
Good luck on this groupbuy! |

Please do NOT post prices anyone!
As oft mentioned above, Brian Cherry specifically requested that we keep these private -- let's humour both Brian and JB.
Thanks.
Coolin: I'll mail you directly. |

I'm taking it that the "Euro" means this group buy is only open to European members.
How about stateside? Can the yanks order, too? Or is there some distribution red tape? Would love to get in on this.
Thanks,
KT |

You may have missed an earlier post of mine -- or the Wiki blurb: Brian Cherry and JB do NOT wish to offend other dealers of the products and are thereby offering an one-off GP for the TX102 (we probably also have Kuei to thank for this). They hope this GP will create subsequent publicity for the product and benefit other dealers/manufacturers as well.
The offer is NOT limited to EU buyers. -- but there may be duties to pay for some...
JonClancy's original "Euro" idea was an attempt to source the cans directly from S&B in the UK (which is part of the EU) and avoid paying import duties by european buyers...

Hi all
I've mailed a number of people. As I'm doing this from different locations, pls excuse any duplications that may turn up.
So far there is lots of interest but only 12 pairs confirmed. Those that haven't already done so, pls check the WIki and confirm your interest (or otherwise) with a "Y" (or "NO") in the re-checked column on the right.. Also, please check/correct the "amount" column accordingly (for example if you're out, do pls remember to put "0"; if you want TWO pairs, enter "4", etc).
Hopefully we can wrap this up by next week. Brian notified me that cans manufacture is expected to take 2-3 weeks.
We'll have to sort out the payment procedure/details too, get all the addresses correctly entered (remember the cans will be shipping to individual destinations, thank God but I think we still have to make this as simple as possible for Brian and JB).
Thanks & cheers;) |

Hi,
I am interested, too. I sent an email to Gregm.
I have a few "NOS" Elma rotary switches (two-pole 23-steps) on hand; price below 20 Euros. But wait until the transformers are here ...
Cheers

...... to all those awaiting emails.
I have been tied up lately, and was at a memorial service for an old friend yesterday.
OK, those who sent me mail, I will email you in a couple of minutes. I'll also add you to my Outlook distribution list. Please excuse any duplicate mails from either myself or Gregm. I suggest that, once we sort out the payment details to Brian, any updates go on the WIKI.
PLEASE do not post any pricing info!
I assume that most people will have access to PayPal - and would recommend this method. If you are able to open an account, then please do so. It takes a few days to get set up, though. Just don't forget to add the relevant fees. Details are available here:
https://www.paypal.com/uk/cgi-bin/w...ng-fees-outside
or here:
https://www.paypal.com/cgi-bin/webs...ng-fees-outside
For those who live in countries where PayPal is not available, there are an number of ways to get the funds to Brian. Details are listed on his website here:
http://www.diyhifisupply.com/diyhs_ordering.htm
Ok, I'll now send the emails that are waiting (sorry again for the delay) and we'll be able to get motoring on this GP.
Please update the WIKI!! :D

Hi Jon,
Re payment how about doing it the way that peranders does and you send a paypal bill to the people in the GP? that way we wont send the wrong amount? I dont know how its done but it seems to work pretty well.
Just a thought? |

Am I mistaken, or are we nearly there:D |

What is the primary to secondary isolation?
The transformer barrier can be used as a level shifter
If this is on the order of hundreds of volts, one can use these volume controls as level shifters to create DC coupled tube circuits (i.e no blocking caps required - there is still galvanic isolation)
If this is on the order of several tens of volts, one can use these volume controls as level shifters to create single stage DC coupled transistor pre-amps.
Would be useful to know ....
Petter |
|
|
| Petter |
| It would also be useful to know how much current can be passed in secondary. If high enough, one can make a "DC coupled" passive amplifier or variants thereof such as amplifiers setting up the a current imbalance in a long-tailed pair directly. |

| krishu |
Hi,
I got the information email - thanks!!
BTW, I would not recommend using the transformator to block DC ... if I remember correctly DC will bring the transformer into saturation (right translation?) ...
Cheers
Christian. |

There is guaranteed DC handeling ability. The wire insulation rating is likely a few 100V minimum, so at your own risk.....

Hello all,
we are now reaching critical mass with this GP. It is time to set the deadlines and publicise the terms & conditions.
THESE POINTS ARE VERY IMPORTANT. PLEASE READ THIS MESSAGE CAREFULLY!!
++WIKI & PAYMENT SCHEDULE++
The WIKI will close at MIDNIGHT Greenwich Mean Time (GMT) on Friday 5 Nov - or 2359Z 5 Nov. This will allow time for most folks to deal with information and payment-forwarding over the weekend.
The WIKI is the means to authenticate individuals for this GP. If you are not on the WIKI, you cannot take part.
Check the WIKI here: http://www.diyaudio.com/wiki/index....+Group+Purchase
If you have difficulty in editing the WIKI, email me.
INDIVIDUAL PAYMENTS TO BRIAN CHERRY TO BE MADE BY MIDNIGHT GMT on FRIDAY 12 NOV.
After that time, the order will be placed. If you miss this deadline, your order will not be placed.
++TERMS, CONDITIONS and GENERAL POINTS - PLEASE REMOVE YOUR ORDER IF YOU ARE NOT 100% HAPPY WITH THESE++
1. Delivery Dates CANNOT be guaranteed. Likewise delivered prices. YOU are liable for tax / duties or whatever other levies are made by your Government.
2. S & B do not deal with individuals - Please do not try to deal with them personally. This will not help and will complicate the GP.
3. Delivery costs can be given by Brian when he knows where (on Earth!) the order is going.
4. All invoices WILL reflect the true value of the goods - No discussion.
5. These will be TX102 MK3 at price discussed.
6. These will be shipped from UK or HK as the case may be.
7. Seiden switches at price mentioned, must ship from Brian in Hong Kong.
8. Django kit at current posted price on www.diyhifisupply.com less $573.60USD (to allow for
discount on Seiden switches Brian has offered) for TX102 and must ship from him.
9. The DIYAudio community will provide tech support and builder advice etc - Not Brian and not S&B.
10. The WIKI is for TX102 orders only. For the Seiden switches and Django individuals must contact Brian to discuss.
11. Once ordered and paid, NO CANCELLATIONS.
12. Delivery is NOT 3 weeks as earler mentioned in my previous emails. Crossed lines - Sorry. The whole process will take around SIX (6) weeks from when everyone on the WIKI has paid or when the payment date of MIDNIGHT GMT on FRIDAY 12 NOV passes.
13. NO FUNDS are to be sent to JB. REPEAT no money to JB. This will complicate the GP out of all proportion (i.e. what is meant for what and from whom).
14. Payment by PayPal to: sales@diyhifisupply.com
15. Payment by credit cards (be prepared for a time-consuming procedure as what is required for on-line transactions here) http://www.diyhifisupply.com/diyhs_ordering.htm (see: Direct Payment By Credit Card)
15. PayPal and credit card WILL REQUIRE AN EXTRA 3% to cover the transaction. Credit cards will be billed in HKD at rate of 7.8 to one USD so that what appears on credit card card may vary depending on currency exchange rates and banks commissions
16. PayPal payments to be made in USD.
17. Payment by Western Union money transfer (exact amount as fee paid at sender side) to my personal name (not to company name as not accepted): Brian Cherry
18. Payment by tt funds transfer (info can be supplied but this is VERY expensive to
the sender as all fees must be paid at sender side)
19. PLEASE NOTE THAT cheques will NOT work in this case as we'd have to wait 28 days to clear
and that would slow the group transaction by a further 4 weeks.
20. UK and EU purchases expect to be charged a 15 GBP delivery charge. Other areas - Please see www.diyhifisupply.com for delivery prices to your locale.
FINALLY:
A big thanks is due to JB and Brian for supporting this GP and allowing us the opportunity to get our hands on these well-respected products. It has not been an easy undertaking, as you can imagine. Thanks also to GregM for his valuable support and efforts.
Best wishes
Jon
P.S. Email me if any aspects of this GP is not clear. I will try to find you the answer. |

I forgot to mention that I am out all day tomorrow and the evening. :drink:
I will answer emails on Friday evening, when I next get back to this computer. If you can't wait that long, you may wish to try Gregm.
Cheers

Hi,
something is not completely clear to me:
I would pay via Paypal; so would I transfer USD *** plus GBP 25 to sales@diyhifisupply.com? How do I know the transfer rate for GBP to USD? Or do I only pay the transformers to sales@diyhifisupply.com and the shipping cost elsewhere?
Thanks a lot for this group buy!!!
Cheers
Christian. |

Hi,
