Howdy All,
Here is a little progress report on my Aleph P 1.7. The preamp will handle my Transport and DAC only so I didn't need any switching. I tried to use the best parts I could afford. The capacitors are Nichicon and Black Gate. The resistors are Holco H8's. The Connectors are Vampire and Cardas. The transformer is Plitron. The attenuators are DACT and I DIYed two 2K variable resistors for the gain controls with some Emco rotary switches and Holco H8 resistors. I had the front and back panels engraved by Front Panel Express.
All I have left to do is finish the wiring and turn a couple of knobs for the front panel. Throughout this project I have had a very understanding wife, who as it turns out, was very helpful with her support while building the preamp. Also a very warm thank you to Nelson Pass. I would love to be able to afford to purchase these things new and support Pass Labs. Unfortunately, I don't have that type of cash to spend on audio equipment with kids and college. If it were not for Nelson Pass and his wonderful designs, that he so freely shares, hi end audio would be just a dream for me. I wish I could pay you in cash Nelson, but for the time being, you will have to settle for a big fat THANK YOU! Here are some Pics for you guys and gals to look at.

Julius: They are N type Black Gates.
Fcel: It should have read "Serial Number: The One and Only" because this has blown away this years DIY budget. I will have to put off DIY speakers for a while. I am not complaining though as it was alot of fun to build and I learned a ton.
It looks like a banner day for Aleph P's as PatPet just finished one too. |

I also would like to build an Aleph 1.7....
and I would like to compare several possibilities for the caps:
1. Wima MKP 10 10uF 160V ( because i have them already )
2. Panasonic FC 220 uF with KP yypass - caps
3. Blackgate caps
because the blackgates are a litlle bit expensive, I would like to know something about your experience about the best values....!
Which values do you use?
Do you use any special bypass caps?

Kilowattski, Congrat, yery neat looking pre. Very nice build quality.
Since your first post gave away all the details there remains only 1 question. How will it sound? But that probably is not a real question either. :) I think I can guess the answer |

All I have is a Transport and DAC I DIYed as a signal source. It really never occurred to me to have another set of inputs. I gues that if I ever get a turntable and arm I will have to build an Aleph Ono. Thank you for the kind words. You have helped me by answering some of my questions along the way and I am grateful for that.:D |
