Best gainclone circuits summary - Click HERE for Original Thread
vossie
Hi Everybody,

I thought we could summarise in this thread the best circuits "discovered" on this forum. I have just about searched and read myself to pieces trying to put everything together but I get the feeling I've missed some of the best. I wanted to compare a few of the designs.

Would the design gurus please be so kind as to publish a few links to the latest circuits for chips like the LM3875 etc.

Dankie baie,
Vossie

In my opinion, in the simplicity and the use of quality components it is that it is the secret. I distinguish two circuits:

http://jwg.student.utwente.nl/fedde/chill-amp.html

I only make a adjustment in the first project, put the condensers of 4.7uF that the Fedde has... Concerning the power supply, in mine project I was my own PS.

Cheers

Thanks for the responses so far ElectroPower and mandat - hope to hear as many opinions as possible...

Sorry to disappoint but the 'best' circuit is the one that sounds best in your system!

So it's a lot of experimenting that's required, not a lot of opinions - for that's all they are! ;)

Start with a very basic to get you started; inverted or non-inverted - you will find supporters for both equally. This is the biggest step and you will then have something to compare other circuits with.

Next, try a simple buffer; either opamp or a simple discrete one (leave the much more complicated valve buffer till later).

Tweak your circuit after reading through this excellent forum. I'm sorry that the information is not all in one place but that is the nature of a developing project and anyway, it's much more fun to discover things for yourself than have it delivered on a plate, even if that were possible!

Don't fool yourself that you can build the optimum GC straight off. You can build one which sounds fantastic but after that it can take a long time to satisfy yourself that it can't be improved any further. But that is the real fun!

A useful addition would be links to diy pcb designs for the various chips; several have been posted here as well as elsewhere, and the criticism in the thread is very useful and generally applicable to other chip amps.

They're also surprisingly hard to find with a forum search...
ElectroPower
Nuuk, you are right, definitively!

vossie, I mencioned that links because for ME, the circuit of Vikash with two 4.7u caps is good but this is for my audio taste, for your ears could not be great, or yes...

Well, make tests, then tell us the result.

Cheers

add to the complexity is the variables where you will play the amps you wanted: what is your source, what cable do you use, what speaker will be used, the type of music you are crazy for, etc etc

Mmmm..... Nuuk and aHobbit, thanks for the input, but that's not really what I wanted... I've experimented with a number of these and I don't need to make a choice what to build.

The purpose for starting the thread is to gather the various circuits in one place. This would make it easier to reference and compare, not only for me, but for many who would like to build one of these GCs.

Have you guys build any of the circuits published here on the forum which you can add to this thread? If we can get all the good chips with their best circuits in this thread we could put some links to the threads providing more detail and thus help the search process which is a nightmare at the moment!!

Thanks again for the responses so far!
:)
