for now im stripping an old buhl overhead for the parts....and there is a sheet of glass on top...how can i tell if its tempered glass or not...i heard that most overheads used tempered glass..i want to make sure...
KingOfSwords
Try breaking it!
(Sorry, couldn't resisit. ;) )

Most higher end overheads use tempered optical glass. Not regular glass. There IS a difference.

how do i find out if my buhl 80 uses tempered glass?
Overd0se
If you take it to a glass shop, they will be able to tell you. They have a device that shoots a laser and determines the type of glass based on how it bounces back.
mindless_fool
got a piece of lexan im going to use that i guess..its got a uv coating too on it

Cant of searched very hard then cos ive seen that thing in numerous pages from when ive searched stuff, you could always email the manufacturer. Try projector central.

Most of the time it is, after all ohps are a cheap machine and temperd glass as a bed is a waste as its not needed, not unless u plan to sit on it lol. The only part of glass in a ohp that is temperd is the glass that covers the bulb area for protection.

if i use lexan will that do the same thing as tempered glass?? i plan on using a sheet cause i got the xl-10 lexan with a uv coating on it...

That depends how warm it gets, it may worp, id just use normal glass and the problems solved.

well i will put the lexan in anyways for uv block and add glass in too...will use a temp probe to see how hot it gets..laxan can take quite a bit of heat according to the spec sheets ive seen
KingOfSwords
Actually I am using lexan. Originally it was just temporary until I could get some glass, but it's holding up well. Seems to attract a lot of dust tho.
mindless_fool
ya it does attract a lot of dust...need to make it anti static somehow....what bulb set up you using king? and how far is the lexan from it?

thanks
KingOfSwords
Not sure the exact distance, I just dropped it in place and secured it. I have a 400watt Ushio Pulse Strike lamp that I got from LL.
mindless_fool
wow thats pretty close....mine will be a bit farther...are you using xl-10 lexan? with the uv coating?
KingOfSwords
It doesn't appear to hurt the material. There was only one kind of lexan at HD when I went and I believe it's all the same. There did appear to be a uv resistant side, yes.
jcbklyny
Lexan would work just as good as glass... and it won't attract as much dust either (goto GE and download the PDF spec sheet for their Lexan with UV Coating).

The home depot around here quit carrying lexan long ago...all we get is Optix brand stuff that's not worth the time. Lowes carries the same. I'll have to see what the lowes and home depot up in seattle carry next time I'm up there.

Or you go with no tempered glass at all look at these results by hertzblaster he's using a 250 watt bulb though and his first fresnel is a little warped but just look at the bright clear images among the best of the diy projectors

Some questions about glass:D

Does anyone know of a place on the web that can custom make a small piece of tempered glass for one part?
What type of heat can regular glass, Annealed glass and tempered glass be expected to take without cracking?
Can or will regular glass warp under the heat of a high wattage halogen? :hot:

Anyway, after a few days of searching I found some answers for a couple of the questions I asked.:whazzat:

This information might be of use for others so I am posting it.

I couldn't find anybody or site to come up with a temp rating for regular pane type glass.
Tempered Glass is heat resistant to 400-500 degrees F .

Neocreram it can take temps to 1292 degrees F and resistant to temp shock, I was told it has an amber tint to it though.

If something had to be real hot light the shell of a bulb Vycor has superior optical qualities and take temps to 2100 degrees F!:hot:

Annealed glass seems to be used mostly to prevent art work from cracking.

In my application I am placing a shield about 4" from a EYB 360 watt bulb and choose to go with a tempered piece of glass.

I ordered a custom size of 3/16" tempered from a place called One Day Glass the ordering process was up front and simple to order even my single piece I required. I placed a basic order list online then called the next day to find out shipping cost and give payment info and confirmation. ;)

To tell if your OHP has tempered glass, this may help you...

From HowStuffWorks.com
quote:
You can easily spot tempered safety glass in an automobile rear windows on a sunny day if you are wearing polarized sunglasses. Tilt your head 90 degrees or so and you will see a symmetrical pattern in the glass created during its tempering process.
