Alternative light source ????? - Click HERE for Original Thread

Hi everyone, I have been reading lots on this site!!

NICE SITE! GREAT PEOPLE! EVEN BETTER PROJECTS!

I had an idea as an alternative light source for a diy video
projector.

Instead of using the MH bulbs, why not use an old slide projector? It already has a bright light, it's fan cooled and the light coming out is in a square format ready to pass through an LCD screen without the first fresnal....

Just a thought, I would love to hear why this has not been mentioned. If it has been tried what were the results like?

Thanks, Gordon

You might be able to use one but several of the reasons not to (off of the top of my head)

#1 those bulbs are usually fairly expensive
#2 Those bulbs generally do not have a long lifetime
#3 You would have a heck of a time getting the distance and everything setup to shine the light on the entire panel. A Slide projector is designed to shine the light in a small space (IE the slide). If you broke apart the slide projector and stuck a small panel before the lens you would have to contend with the heat (a lot of slide projectors run fairly hot and have glass pieces to block the heat).

There may be other issues as well such as color temp and whatnot.

If you have one though by all means try it out. I would love to be proven wrong (because I know where quite a few are :>) but I personally feel that in the end that it would cost more time/money/energy then it would to use a cheap halogen bulb or a more expensive MH setup.

@corryn,

yeah, some people did. they put a 2.5" lcd in the slide frame and added a fan. but the reso is horrible. the tungsten light with color temperature of 3200°K gives a yellowish picter.
don't waste time and money.

OK thanks for the input. I figured the heat would be a problem!

OHP's are hard to find here as well as expen$ive.

Keep up the great site!

Try ebay, you can get some good prices if the items aren't listed well.
