diyAudio Logo Competition Draft Entries - Click HERE for Original Thread
Layberinthius
I took a crack at a replacement for the logo up above.

The other half of the image is incomplete and is dedicated to Solid State/IC/DAC etc equipment alone.

here it is:
Layberinthius
Another shot of the background alone.

The first from the left is an image of a rock concert with the sun rising in the background, the 2nd image is of jimi hendrix and a mercury arc rectifier on the left (blue) aswell as a 845 on the right glowing cheerfully.

I had to invert the colour of the text to fit the profile of the black background.

I am thinking about re-doing a copy with a white background theme as the black one may force diyAudio.com to use wholly-black for their user interface preference, which isn't good ;P

Of course that's even if I get selected, which is highly unlikely..

I would say this will turn out far too complex for diyAudio.com and I'd be set back to drawing a couple of squiggly lines that barely resemble the original letters of the diyAudio.com logo.

I /might/ be able to scratch up a white background preference.

We are looking at doing a complete make over so no real need to keep with the current colours.

My luck may have changed :)

Cheers.
Wardsweb
Well?
Wardsweb
maybe?
Layberinthius
Hmm the competition is tough!! :P

I need to be more flexible in what diyAudio.com can do with what I create.

How bout this one?
Layberinthius
A more colourful version...

You could always scale up or down with this one as there is no images to resize and warp the perspective.

Change the colour, add a metal triangle for a symbol of audio prescision along with being a functional character of the name!
Wardsweb
and again
Layberinthius
We're definatley onto something here wardsweb...

My last submit based upon the coloured background with a triangle twist.

Think I'll scrap it :P

I personally don't like triangles.

Doesn't this look smart:

I couldn't help but laugh at that robot :P

I'll talk with a fellow I know in NYC tonight and see what he has to say about making a scalable logo for free with his l33t graphics skills.

hehe :D
Wardsweb
Did you ever see a cartoon called Mighty Mouse? He sang " Here I come to save the day." So a cross between Mighty Mouse and the Iron Giant. :D
Wardsweb
here is the one you like with the tag line added

My first post. Heres mine...

I could do just about anything, i have a ton of photos .. my gear mostly. but heres a basic, meat and potatoes logo :)

Here is the bigger version:

carlosfm
That one looks very good Jan, congratulations.
For me, you win the bike.:D
AudioFreak
Just to give you all some idea of what standard of art we are looking for, Jan's entry is the only thing so far that would even be considered and we are looking for alot better than that before we are gonna part with the prizes.
denn!s
Hi...
When is the term for excepting applications?
denn!s
what do you think? :)

Maybe you also should mention that the logo must be printable also. => not too much "fuzz"

I think "less is more" is valid here also.
Wardsweb
My bad, thought it was for a text logo. So, here is a draft of one of mine taken up a notch.
karma
for tube lovers:D

If it was up to me........;)
karma

Improved the slogan as well :devilr:
karma

i maid a link on my webpage to see what it looks like under
webpage projects
planet10
OK, i'm going to step in with some constructive critism...

1st off, any logo needs to work as a gif. And in the case of karma's latest, the white will need to be transparent (Bas with his has an added "background "flag" which defines the space around the logo.

dave
planet10
As you can see above, you have to be very careful of shadows & such -- the above ends up being restricted to a white background..

dave
karma
hmm one sec
AudioFreak
Indeed, it will need to work with a transparent background especially for merchandise etc.
Bricolo
So you want something that can be used with a transparent background for merchandises

and another one with an image in the background, like Jan's one?
karma
transparent gif

No, just a single one that will serve all purposes. Jan's one could have any background in place of the white around the edges and would not be adversely effected.
Wardsweb
ok figure art is not my forte' but here is a simple mascot that can be anything you want.
Wardsweb
taking the mascot a few more steps so show possibilities

By background I meant the blue thing in the back of Jan's logo

Bricolo
Wardsweb, nice mascot ;) But isn't it copirighted? (it's an office clipart, no?)

And give him some headphones, and a soldering iron instead of the pen :D

You may use the images for illustrative or decorative purposes as long as the publication is not for sale or the main content, i.e. you can not sell a book showing the different characters. In another way, if you removed the charaters, would the site still stand on it's own. I guess to be on the safe side and to avoid any confusion, I'll scrape this idea.
Jeff Wong
If I have time, I'll work on some others. I have lots of ideas, but, am busy with a massive art project that's eating up most of my time.
Bas Horneman
just getting to grips with Illustrator....

It can obviously be made transparent..but won't look good on the diyaudio background because of the same colours...

Edit : Not anywhere near competition quality. But the message or question is...how about using a lot of our current colours for instant recognition (look and feel)...ok I admit the font detracts again.

PS...I think it is time people got critical about the designs...everyone seems afraid to criticize the one design or the other...c'mon lets hammer each other like we do with each others diy projects.:smash: :) I mean I am sure there are objective standards, like recognition, font suitable for print and screen, colours...etc, etc.

Personally I'm not to keen on red in the logo..I do like Jeff Wong's strong box enclosed logo though...HATE the transistor;) , but like the soldering iron...it is pretty much a standard tool, be you into tubes, speakers or chip amps.

Cheers,
Bas
Jeff Wong
Here's a quick modification to be more inclusive:
Jason
Perhaps of interest for a laugh anyway... the prior two logo designs...

2000 http://web.archive.org/web/20000229...w.diyaudio.com/

2002 http://web.archive.org/web/20020523...w.diyaudio.com/
karma
cool a forum with a history:D

i think 2002 logo is better:)

Just to make it clear...I have no say in what the logo should look like. Everything is purely my own opinion, as a diyAudio member.

ooer, I used to work in graphic design for quite prestigious companies before I turned my hand to making noise professionally. I see mentions of prizes, tell me more! Your new logo is on its way.

The law of karma states that you will get back 3 times what you give. I think that karma may be about to recieve a couple of thousand attachments of slight variations of the same logo. I have to say that from most of what I have seen you lot should stick to the soldering irons and leave photoshop and illustrator well alone. They're big, heavy programs and the results can be dangerous to those of a nervous disposition. If I showed one of those to my old boss... oh my word! I'd have been sent packing with a propelling pencil sticking out of my face. I like the stick man tangled up in the wire though.

I'd like to win the bike, but I'm better with the soldering iron than with drawings.:clown:
Maby my kid would make something much better than me, and much more original...:D
Recycle-Bin
Would you accept anything made with or in combination with Bryce 5, Maya 5, 3DS MAX 6, (?Terragen?), Poser 5, or Cinema 4D? I bet I could come up with maybe a few "interesting" things for a logo or mascot... hahahahaha... :D

Could we keep this thread for Artwork please, there is another discussion thread! ;)

Let's keep it simple...

Just a first approach, far from being a true design:

Quick effort...

transparent background version...

and finally tonight...

whoops..

planet10
#67 has some promise... the M needs tidying and the proportions on the speaker & ground symbol aren't quite right (but it is a good sign that we are talking minuta)

some tinkering with illustrator...dint quite get it rt..has never used the tool before..!!

OK, Dave...;)

ajju
ok...
the idea behind this...

the font was attempted to be created..i dont know if anything similar exists..i wanted an identity for the font to make it unique to diyAudio...
i felt the font face should symbolise what diyAudio is all about in addition to providing a contemporary look..i chose the font face to be free flowing with a lot of interaction among characters...emphasising diyAudio to be a forum for free flow of information and a discussion forum for newer technologies pertaining to Audio and video....the dot signifies the web which is the primary source for gathering knowledge and the means of interaction among the diyAudio audiophile community... the form in red eminating from the dot..is a flame..in the colour red it signifies..strong energy..passion..how passionate the members are about their hobbies and about diyAudio..the letters are angled upwards with the two ends indicating a covergence somewhere above the logo..signifying the progression and concentration of ideas.!

purposefully the transitors, speakers or any representation of other components has been kept out...diyaudio treats each subject with equal importance...
However, i was thinkin of adding a band at the bottom which will carry our punchline(in a different font) along with line drawings signifying the components/topics on the forum...all to come..! but befor that i need to get some time and a machine with enough tools to create a neat looking piece... the current one was created with illustrator in about 2 hrs sitting on a machine at a net cafe which had a very naughty mouse..so please excuse the quality :))
Actually i did a save for web and forgot to change the download speed setting to highest..which rendered a reallly ugly image..!! will try and make a neat gif today..!
btw ..what do u guys think...?

ajju
IVX
?? Why the transparent GIF is necessary? Do you want change the logo only without changing the background color and general graphics concept? If background color is defined, then transparent GIF aren't necessary and any smart detail like shadows, gradients, will be possible.
martinay
I have been here at the forum on-and-off for some time now and never have much experience to say anything, but this time I thought I should do something for the forum.

I quite like the negative version myself :D

These are open to suggustions! :)

Version A

Version B

Version C

Can i suggest to plug the speakers? :-) The new speakers is alive and only 7kb vs 32kb of old&dead speakers. Closer to reality?

And right:

Good point, but surely the only component guaranteed to be in an audio system of any kind is a speaker
mooseydoom
er... first draft
planet10
That last one has some potential....

the circuit board one -- i applaud the direction, but the letters need to be instantly recognizable

dave
DC Dave
slow day at the office..........
mooseydoom
rework of the screwdriver theme.
mooseydoom
should probably work in a good "audio" symbol... a speaker? or maybe a music note... still drafting...

i see, so i need a bit more thought on the fonts then...
i will scrap the pcb idea and think of another approach

thanks!

perhaps somebody likes this more...

Intended to be simple yet hint at some aspects of diy audio - drivers, electronics, etc. These are shown in the backgound of "audio" but could be made more clear. I would like to add some drivers such, probably Seas excel in a similar way to which the vifa MG drivers are in the current logo.
paulspencer
Possible "mascot" ... does a driver count as a mascot?
Ropie

planet10
Keep em coming guys... i'm starting to see some stuff that has potential -- it is interesting that more than a few, are quite similar to what exists now...

As to the mascot, i'm not yet sold on the idea, attached is one of the ideas Jason had put together -- myself a screwdriver (maybe with arms & legs) might well be better....

How's this for an engineering god? Saw this in a hotel in Cambodia :)

Quite elegant, but kinda hard to read. I encourgae lateral thinking like this, otherwise we could well just see a rehash of the existing one -- that may not be a bad thing, but i know there has to be something spectacular out there....

hey the abstract one looks good...:)
can the readability be a bit improved keeping the idea...??
And probably a different colour scheme..?
