| Alright.. i know this is probablly a dumb/weird question, but why do people use tramsformers instead of like... whatever they are.. transistors, diodes, chips.. all those things that multiply or divide voltages.. is it because of isolation of PS noise? Just wondering.. it seems like using SS stuff would be cheaper and lighter. Thanks |

You mean interstage transformers? Oh, there's a whole religion around those things, just as there is about triodes, directly-heated and single-ended circuits in particular, and so on...

| Transformers are very efficient and they physically isolate the power supply from the mains. Meaning that the secondary wires of a transformer are not connected to the primary wires. The voltage on the secondary winding is induced from the electromagnetic field produced by the primay winding. Also, transformer does not just change the voltage, but also transforms the current.
