Hello from me + query for psone lcd users - Click HERE for Original Thread

Hello there - I'm new to the forums but have been reading them ever since the monster projector posts. :)

Anyway, I have a quick query for anyone who has / is using a PSone LCD in their projector setup.

I have received one today and I only have an original playstation to test it with at the moment (one of the grey ones). It has a passthru connector which I duly connected to the screen to get the 5v on pin 10 + video.

The screen comes on and displays *but* it doesn't sync. ie: the screen appears to have a slowly rolling 'scan' running up it.

I was wondering if anyone else has tried this with an original PS or if anyone knows of syncing differences between the PS and PSone consoles as I can't connect the screen with anything else and I'm wondering if it's just plain faulty. :whazzat:

Thanks!

I've never used one, so this might not fix your problem, but it sounds like a grounding problem. You mentioned a pass-through ... use a direct connection instead and see if that helps. Good luck!

I see where you're coming from there but It was me being unclear - when I say 'passthrough', I was implying a cable which is designed to allow composite RCA + Audio breakout (not used for this) from a normal PS lead and then allow connection of a full 12-pin PS type display device beyond this. Effectively (or hopefully) nothing more than an 'extension' lead for the PS a/v port.

It's physically impossible to make a direct connection at the moment because the PSone screen is designed to flush-fit to the Psone (which is of course different in shape to the PS).

With what you said about grounding, I suppose it could be that my cable doesn't carry all 12 cores.

One thing I just noticed is that the cable I have doesn't have a metal outer edge at either the male or femal ends wheras my PS and PSone screen do have it.

Is it likely (or does anyone know for sure) that the outer part of the plug is a ground too - possibly carried by cables with a 13th core?

Thanks for your help so far..... :)

diylabs: you are a saint! :D

It just occured to me (duh - wasn't thinking) to check the outer plug/socket casings on the screen itself for continuity (it has a back replicator) and sure enough, there is a circuit between the casings.

It seems you are absolutely right about the ground so now I'm going to have to find a PSone lead (in the UK - oh no) that includes the outer casing.

Or I could even go ahead and get a composite lead (I'm not able to use VGA) and try it that way.

Thanks for the help - Brilliant :D

I'm very glad to hear that worked for you! I'm not quite sure what you mean by getting a new lead (a replacement connecter perhaps), but I hope it all works out for you. Take care!

pvt....check out the thread i started and look for the pic i posted with the little alligator clamps.....if you're wanting to open your screen just follow the right side of the video input and locate the first two metal strips....these are your video input connectors.....

the third on the right side and the one on the left are for audio.....

i spliced the 2 clips to an rca/composite cable and ran it to my crappy vcr to test the screens......if you need a power supply to run the screen make sure it is 7.5volts and 2 to 2.5 amps.....anything less will result in an incomplete picture.....

i believe i posted some pics i got on my screen with 7.5 volts and only .3 amps.....the lines scrolled as well.....

i'm just starting my first projector assembly and am going to try to post pics as i go.......

if you have any more questions i'll do my best to help.....

correction:

2 to 2.5 amps is recommended but not absolutely necessary.....

however i do know that anything real low won't work or will give you a bad pic......

Well, after studying pinout and testing my cable (really fiddly), I've come to the conclusion that its the PSU I have that is probably causing the problem. Its designed for PSone but is only rated at 2 amps and I suspect its actually turning out a bit less

I'm going to get a 12v Sony PSU for the screen next week so hopefully I can get enough amps out of one of those - If that fails.......erm........Liliput maybe? :)

Cheers for the interest!
