WTB: Thorens turntable - Click HERE for Original Thread
elizard
I'm looking for a FUNCTIONAL thorens turntable, one of the following models:
td 125, td 150, td 165, td 160 may also be considered

It doesn't have to be in pristine condition as I will be rebuilding it, but it has to be functional, and has to come with an arm and a cartridge which I can use until I am able to buy a new arm/cart.

Preferably located in Canada, due to shipping charges, but US will be considered as well if the price is right. Europe is simply too expensive for shipping for me to be able to obtain it, BUT again, if both the price of the TT and the shipping is low enough, I will consider it!

I am looking to pay no more than about $80USD ($100ish CDN), plus another $20USD for shipping, so in total no more than $100USD AFTER shipping.

As I said, the condition its in is not of much concern to me, but it has to be fully functional. Please post here, or email me with anything that you may have.

If you haven't yet you might want to check ebay. There are always a few Thorens listed.

I'm keeping an eye on ebay, and I've been following it for the past little while. Sadly, most of those found on ebay are in great britain, or US, and they go over my budget. There is a td 165 I'm looking at from canada, but the buyer for some reason cancelled and re-listed the item a day before it was supposed to end! Its a good price right now too, $40!

I don,t have a Thorins but I have an old AR with a brand new belt
I don,t know the condition of,or # of the sure cartrige but $50
+ shipping from 30290 would buy it.. if you convience me you need it.

Regards,

Woody

I'd prefer a thorens, but depends on how my search goes I might consider the AR. Do you know the model # of the TT? And do you have any pictures?

Thank You
elizard
One other thing, would AR rate as good as the thorens? (or perhaps better than thorens?)

As I said, I'm not too concerned with the cartridge, as long as it comes with one so I can use it temporarily.
It will be refitted with a new arm/cartridge when the time comes.
elizard
ONE more thing, does it look like this by any chance?

Once you get comparable arms on them, the AR & the Thorens are close... they both come with less than stellar arms, but the AR is the less stellar of the 2.

How easy is it to equip a thorens td165 with an arm compared to an AR AX (or xa .. )?
What about other mods, which is more accepting of them?

Btw, i'm still waiting for a response from woody. If he wishes to sell the AR to me, then AR it is. Otherwise there's a thorens and a couple ar's on ebay i'm keeping an eye on.

It is about equally easy... i've done transplants on both. You do need to get the right arm. I have an AR here, but the headshell bolts have been ripped out so i was going to do an arm transplant. Got the arm (and could probably scare up another), just no time yet. Woody's sounds like a better deal than what i need to get out of mine.

As to other mods, since the Thorens is essentially the same topology as the AR (and the Linn) mods end up being simpler. The subchassis on the AR is more elegant and the wiring a little less "german" so it is probably the easier of the 2 to work with.

Another note: The TD165 (and TD145) came with a plastic inner platter (as opposed to the metal one in the TD160) and the ARs is metal, so that tends to give the AR the edge on the 2 lesser Thorens.

Very helpful replies, thank you!

I was hoping to find a TT in canada, but it is hard! I'll still be watching those 2 ARs on sale, but as long as I get woody's response before then, I'll take his offer for sure.

Sounds like it'll be a fun summer! :)

A bit of a drive, but i've probably 10 TTs down in the lab, and i've probably sold 10 in the last 6 months... (only 3 Thorens thou -- and even the most beat-up in excess of your budget -- just shipped a unit to Winterpeg yesterday matter of fact)

Woody: I am still awaiting for your response to this thread, or to the email.
Thank you

e-mail if interested!!!

Well, there's (what seems to be) a decent AR on sale in canada (which is always a bonus). The only problem is that it doesn't include a stylus.

Would I be able to purchase a grado cartridge and use it with the stock arm? (I was looking at a grado prestige black, or possibly if i'm willing to spend slightly more the prestige red)
Or would I have to replace the arm as well in order to use that cartridge? (I do plan on replacing the arm once there's more money, just not right away).

Any pictures? Also, what condition is it in? How much do you want for it? Does it come w/ a cartridge?

P.S. you can email me at elizard2k@hotmail.com for further info.
Thank you.

Hi
Grab the AR!
This is the mother to wich most other suspended subcassis ttīs owe their genes ( do ttīs have dna codes?).
Rightly treated this can surpass most high end exotica available, but a bit harder to work on than a Thorens.
The original tonearm is far better than it looks, check for play in bearings, can be adjusted. Grado will work well. Changing arm takes a bit more work than other similar ttīs. As the subchassis is diecast You have to cut the tonearmend off and provide a method for attaching a mounting platform for a new arm. You also have to enlarge the hole in the top chassis which is made out of pretty thogh steel so You need a good blade on Your jigsawmachine. I have kept most templates for this kind of AR rebuild, so if You decide to go AR iīll send You what info iīve got.

How does $60USD sound for an AR (which looks to be in decent condition, can't check it out though, ebay!) without a stylus?

If I could get this one for $60-$70 (I'm willing to pay more for it since its in canada, so no customs/etc), then I'd definitely order a new cartridge right away. Is the grado black good, or should I get the project grado OEM you suggested, or step up to the grado red?
planet10
Grado works well... i have a source for inexpensive good used units if anyone is interested in a really budget cart.

When i did AR mods it didn't seem all that hard.... drilling a larger hole in the top plate does require a good drill and some patience. A couple appropriate washers is all you really need to create flat surfaces to clamp down the arm mounting assembly... sometimes i would also have to grind down the "legs" of the ibeam.

Would you be able to post, or email the prices/models of carts you have available? Or is there one you would recommend (that's of course not beaten to death). My budget for the cart is (hard to decide), but I'd say we'll go for $50-$60CDN (Since I can get the grado black for $60 new).
Sorry for the tight budget, but I am a student. I shouldn't even be spending all this money anyway, but .. oh well :)

For 60 bucks go get it.
See what Dave has in stock of pre-used or go for the cheapest Project oem (project 4 i think ).
If You go AR iīll tell You the story of Ed Liefs (former Swedish AR agent) demo at a fair at US Trade Center in Stockhom.

Sure I can post pics later this evening. The dustcover is nothing to look at, although I removed it from the unit when in use anyhow. This is a very nice unit, and is the predecessor to the Linn SP-12. I want $100.00 plus shipping, which is more than reasonable for this table. Comes with an Audio Technica Tonearm and a Ion cartridge.

If you are interested I'll post pics later.

A good price for sure... i had one of these before i got a Linn... it isn't near the TT that a Linn has, but certainly is in the same league as the AR & the Thorens, and if the arm is the AT i'm thinking of then that would give it the leg-up.

BTW: i seem to recall that this TT morphed into another, which was then scooped up by AudioNote UK...

Well, I put a bid in for the ar turntable. I was waiting for your response earlier, so I just put it in while waiting. The auction ends in an hour and a half, so I won't raise my bid any longer, and if I do get outbid, I'll let you know and then I'll get your TT (and a cart from planet10).

Thanks.

I can't post pics as my camera is being used for the Metallica concert tonight. This may sound like a fish story, but a collegue of mine won back stage passes to the concert and we are getting an autographed Kirk Hammet ESP guitar to auction off for a non-profit society I work for!!! He want to take pics of the event and the autographing of the guitar (for authenticity). I'll post a pic of the event tomorrow, when I get the camera back.

Don't worry about the turntable. If you have bid on another, I can post it later for sale. I can easily get between $150.00-$200-00 US for it on E-Pay, so I'm not in a rush. Just thought I'd extend a deal to a fellow canuck!!!

Cheers

I really do appreciate the deal. That's why I love this site, its FULL of nice people like you willing to extend a deal to a fellow diy-er.

Sweet deal about the metallica tickets. That's wicked!!!
My sister had 1 extra seat, so I was offered to go. But my girlfriend wanted to go see them more than I did (she was supposed to go see bowie with me in april, but can't cus of an exam), so i gave them up to her.

BTW, this is the turntable i just won.: http://cgi.ebay.ca/ws/eBayISAPI.dll...4&category=3283
Not too bad of a price, eh?

Thanks

PS planet10 - i emailed you about the carts. Just let me know how much $$$ and how you want me to pay. Thank you!!
woody

Woody: I never got your email :(

I ended up buying the turntable at an ebay auction. Not too bad of a price, plus its in canada, so shipping is not bad, and no taxes etc.

Thank you for your offer however!

I am about to buy my first turntable. It will be probably Goldring GR 1.2 or 2.Has anyone compared those turntables to Thorens TD150,160?Is there any difference between them.I only consider buying one from those 4.
