IRFP044 Group Order - Click HERE for Original Thread
PrimeCase
Hi All

Bigparsnip has kindly set up a wiki for a IRFP044 group order, There are details over here IRFP044 Group Order Wiki Page

I will have updates on lead times sometime after 22:00 GMT on Monday.

Thanks to all concerned

Kevin
PrimeCase
A quick update for all concerned, we are above minimum order and I'll be on the phone to Richardson electronics on Monday, keep your eyes peeled on this page and the wiki for an update.

I live in central Missouri and Richardson are in IL and shipping by UPS ground takes 2 or 3 days maximum, so no problems there.

400+ devices are already on the wiki page and I'd encourage anyone to add themselves to the list. April 1st will be the cut off point for this order. I'll have to finalize payment details and contact information but rest assured the only thing extra to the end users will be, PayPal fee's, postage and possibly any unforseen extras like padded bags or boxes for postage. I'm not going to be making anything on this order and like a lot of group purchases any extra monies left over from this will be donated to the Diyaudio site. If anyone want's to co-ordinate distribution in Europe, that would be appreciated too.

Many thanks guys and girls

Kevin
bzo
When I spoke to the sales agent at Richarson, I had her look into the lead time. She indicated that it shouldn't be more than a week or two.

Incidentally, for those interested in the IRFP240 devices, Richardson also has them at an excellent price of $1.27 qty < 100, and $0.98 qty >= 100. While they are on order also, the sales agent told me that there was no minimum order on those. So anyone should be able to order them on their own from their web site.
PrimeCase
In addition the heatsinks I pointed out in the other thread are available at $51 each length. Using 2 x 18" lengths (4 x 8.75") cut into 4 peices total gives a good amount of heatsinking for an amplifier with 8 (or 12) fets per channel running 13-15v rails with up to 7 amps bias. This gives an estimated rise above ambient of around 30-33C dissipation of around 26w per fet.
This is how I'll be running my amplifier, obviously users are free to use what they like but for keeping it as economical as possible (ok, I admit I'm related to Scrooge) this is an easy way to go.

I'll post some pictures on the builders thread to show how they look.

Kevin
Magura
Ill sort out the european distribution.

For europeans you will have to add customs duty. Ill find out how many percent that is tomorrow.

Magura:)

Thanks for the help, I have thought about getting the FET's to you in one large package already divided up in individual packages labled and ready to go to the end user. Customs duty might be a bit of a pain but I'll talk to one or two people who have done group purchases in the past to see how they handled it.

contact me by e-mail and we'll figure something out, I want this to be as painless as possible for you.

thank you

Kevin

I know this may seem a bit strange, but wouldnt' ti be cheeper to simply pop the FETs for each none USA person into a small USPS Global Priority mail envolop and send them out individulay, as that would only cost $5 each and will generaly avoid customs as it is such a small pacakage.

Just my 2 cents though, so please don't be offended or put off at all.

Bingo! Those little wonder envelopes do exactly the same thing here in Canada.

My thoughts exactly...

The IRFP044's come in (plastic) tubes of 25
and each tube weights maybe 1/2 pound.
My guess is that you cut each tube in half,
tape the ends and get a hundred mosfets
in each of the larger global priority mail
envelopes.

Dennis
PrimeCase
Lets see how the sign up is looking before making any commitments one way or the other.....if we have only a few overseas purchases I can't see how it will hurt to send them individually.

anyway, thanks for the input guys

Kevin
jwb
For those of us ordering in multiples of 25, can you please ensure that we are each shipped the manufacturers package? We'll presumably get better matching.
Magura
I know for a fact that customs will not accept tubes of 25 pcs passing into europe without duty paid. I have recieved smaller packages without being charged duty, but they were all checked by the customs and included a customs declaration issued by a company, saying that it was samples.

We are as far as i could understand from the customs of Denmark's webpage, facing 25% VAT and 3% duty.

In that case it would at least even out with customs versus sending individual packs to everybody.

Besides that, its causing a little less problems to everybody that they wont have to trouble with the customs.

For my sake, those couple of units I want to order youre free to ship by USPS priority air, since 10 pcs have little risk to attract any attention, but i assure you that 2 tubes of 25 pcs does.

Magura:)
rwagter
Magura ea,

I just recieved +100 PCB for the Aleph-x from Hifizen which had a commercial value of + $500. When you have to declare it you'll indeed have to pay the normal custom prices (17-25% it depends).

But scientific parts used for non commercial purposes are not taxed at all.
So now you only have to find a reason that you're project is part of some sort of research, I propose this:

Comparing audio signal apparture using various different parts...

Ok some say this is fraud, but since all parts are already taxed (normal VAT) in the US, why should I have to pay them also...
The non commercial purpose is of course not lied, or Mr Pass will send his army of lawyers to your house ;)

For my part, USPS priority is fine, just ship it as a letter with a value < $49 and it's not neccesary to declare at all (I'll take the risk)

It is fraud, and if you get caught doing what you proposed, you have a serious problem.

If anybody wants to get a criminal record, go ahead.

I though principially agree with you on the fact that its inreasonable that we have to pay VAT twice, but thats the law around here.

Magura:)
rwagter
Ok,

just send me the irf's, uninsured. It has no monatary value, that would be ok, woudn't it ?!

Just make sure you dont sign anything thats not true.

Ralph (and anyone else not familiar with tax laws in the US)

You may be interested to know that sales tax on some mail order items is waived if you order it out of state, if you are a commercial entity (which we are not) we have to declare a "sales use" tax on all purchased items, needless to say there shouldn't be any sales tax this end. If I'm wrong I'd like someone to put me straight so I don't end up facing the IRS....

Kevin
PrimeCase
Ok, this isn't looking too good for a speedy delivery

I have just been speaking with sales at Richardson and they are calling IR for availability on 1800 FETS ......be aware, that on March 19 IR had in stock only 500 devices and Ilene informed me there could be a long delay. She will be contacting me sometime today (IR permitting) with more information.

The sales rep for Richardson said it could be as long as 12 weeks.

more news later.

Kevin
jwb
Digikey has 5000 in stock, and you could get a pretty good price ordering more than 1000 pieces ($1.41 each). At these levels, you could also order directly from IRF.
bzo
Perhaps we can place 2 seperate orders, one for the stock they have, and the other for the remainder? The lead time should only be a week or two for the quantity in stock and price per chips would be the same, just a little extra shipping cost.
PrimeCase
they haven't got back to me yet on this, I will bear in mind the digikey prices..........

information coming soon as I'm going to give Richardson another call

Kevin
PrimeCase
Speaking with the sales rep at Richardson, this is basically what they can do.

They can get 525 from IR, these will arrive in 2 weeks, another 900 will be available in the middle of April...the remainder in May...not good. I asked to speak with their account manager and they said that is all they can do!

Now I don't know how people feel about this but I'm not looking forward to it dragging out over a few months and obviously the impact to my credit card over that time. I won't bill people or expect payment if they are going to be kept waiting.

options that have been suggested!

make the order and distribute the FET's as they arrive and as the orders were added to the wiki...and damn the torpedoes as they say..this means late comers will be waiting a long time...sorry

drop the idea of going with Richardson and pay the still reasonable price from DigiKey $1.41 ea (which is the same as what IR quoted me for 1300) even though it is 50% over the price from Richardson.

scrap the whole idea?

up to you guys to convince me with reasonable arguments......if over 50% say they wont mind waiting I'll go ahead and order now...

Kevin
bzo
Kevin, whatever you decide to do, I support. After all, let's not forget that you're doing us the favor by organizing the buy.

If it were me, I would:

1) order the 1425 pieces (525+900)
2) impose an order limit per person (100 pieces?)

Doing the above would serve everyone currently signed up on the Wiki. If there is enough followup interest, another group buy could be organized by you or someone else through Richardson, IRF or Digikey.
PrimeCase
bzo....thanks

not a bad idea

anyone else?

Kevin
Magura
That makes sense. Nobody needs more than 50 pcs right away anyway, so that solution should keep everybody happy.

Magura:)
rwagter
indeed 50 per person would be great. In europe I can get them for €1.40 a piece so ordering at digikey wouldn't give me much advantage over richardson.
And persons who are in need of more then 50 pcs can always swap with persons who have more then enough after matching.

Ralph
leadbelly
I vote for the 1425/#peopleonwiki=maximum rule :)
PrimeCase
Ralph
Excellent idea but most of the first signups on the wiki page are for orders of 50 or less.......

Ok guys...I'm going to ask that the wiki be unofficially closed but please anyone past the first 500 devices please either e-mail me or post your thoughts here so we can be as fair as we can to everyone.

This is what I propose, we close the group order for now.....and I'll wait till the end of this week (Friday) for anyone who wishes to drop out of the group purchase due to the time involved. We'll still be able to get the good price for anyone that remains in.....the only thing extra this will cost the end user is a delay. If I hear from everyone before then all the better.

Those people listed below Grimberg in the wiki page please e-mail me with your intention to continue or seek alternative sources. I need these numbers to place an order. Andrew (Big Parsnip)....you will get 75 as requested as I wouldnt be able to make the next users full request of 100.

Everyone else, I apologize for the circumstances beyond my control

On Friday 26th (possibly before)I will place an order with Richardson for the FETS for whoever is still in the group purchase and I will post instructions on how to get payment to me, shipping costs and other details. PayPal is preferred but a money order in US dollars is acceptable also. bear this in mind.

Hopefully I'll hear from everyone soon.

thanks for your patience and understanding

Kevin
bzo
I've taken the liberty of editing the Wiki to reflect the latest discussions on how the order will be allocated.

Primecase, please edit the section regarding whether order limits will be placed, as it affects a few people near the end of the list.

Also, it looks like Michi124 added an entry as this decision was made. I've created a waitlist section and placed Michi124 there in case anyone drops out.
PrimeCase
bzo....thank you for keeping an eye on things

I have been taking care of the missus after surgery...so I can be a little scarce at times.

I'll edit the wiki shortly, in all fairness about limits on the orders I hate to do that but in fairness to those at the bottom of the list I may just say 50 each for now and it will mean no one has to wait too long. It also means that shipping, postage and general hassles are lessened.

I'll think on this a little.

Kevin
byteboy
Hi all,

Since I was ill for a few days, I missed the start of this thread a few days ago.....

But I would still be interested in 150 pcs. of the IRFP044 @ $0.87 a piece and added my order in the "Wait List" section on the WIKI page.

I am in no real hurry and could wait a little longer for delivery since I still have to order many of the other parts, and I guess others will have to do this also.

I hope that you Kevin can use your existing contacts with Richardson to extend this order in time or place a second order for a later delivery date at this really good price.

I too have no problem with waiting for the fets till April.

Is anybody in need of the fets before april??

If not, you might as well make it easy for yourself and buy them all at once.

Ok Gents.....

Another update for everyone,

I have set up a premiere pay pal account to accept payment(details coming later) and have figured out shipping costs using global priority mail for overseas purchases (except Italy, for some strange reason it isn't available, sorry) and priority mail for domestic purchases.

the pay pal fee's are quite reasonable and similar to a small retailer's fee's on credit card purchases, 3.9% and a $0.30 transaction fee. I will be contacting everyone with a mailshot giving details and a breakdown of costs, there will be a 2.5% added to the cost of the fets to cover shipping to me and the cost of packaging materials....this is about $33 on the total purchase. Any aditional left over will be donated to DIY Audio.

The Reichelt Gp buy is on hold for a day or two.

1.41 digikey plus 17.5% VAT (for the customs) = 1.66 USD = 1.35 Euros (ish).

Reichelt are banging out IRFP044Ns for 1.20 Euros. If you can't wait, why not have a look at Andypairo's WIKI?

I am going to hold on until Part II of this order, though, as I am planning on building my AX in 2007!! ;)

UPDATE

I'll be sending a blanket e-mail out to all those who haven't confirmed their order this evening to get ready for ordering the devices on Friday.

If you have already confirmed by e-mail do not be alarmed if you do not receive anything, take that as my conformation to you of your intentions.

I'll be sending out instructions for payment on Friday, again I will make this as simple as possible for all concerned.

For speed and security for all parties concerned PayPal is the preferred method but US money orders are welcome for anyone who will be waiting a while. I'm not sure on international money orders and I suspect that costs either end will make it less attractive for both parties (not sure to be totaly honest)

Sounds good (pun intended).

I just popped up in my mind that i should remind you of that once you get to shipping, you have to include a copy of the paypal transfer for customs declaration purposes. Else they fine Danes (dunno about the rest of europe) 10 USD for the lack of declaration papers....or even worse, they open the pack, and with their lacking understanding of static sensitive ithems, id rather avoid that. It must also be written loud and clear that those are static sensitive parts, and the bags are not to be opened. Trust me, they will open the bags if such precautions are not taken :(

If ordering 250 units is a problem, I will only get 200.

PrimeCase ,

I am ready for paypal transactions , and will wait for instructions from you ; let me know if there is little problems with international airmail shipping to Italy , I recall something similar happens in the first AX board group - thanks to HIFIZEN - but nothing irremediable .

Yes, correct..........you came in late with a big order, you may be fortunate with 200 devices not to be split between two dates but there are no guarantees until I have placed the order. Anyway I will get this moving as quick as I can.

All interested parties, Please add yourself to the wait list if you are interested but for the moment this order is closed pending a major windfall of fets in a dark corner of the Richardson warehouse, I'll probably run one more group order after this.

Oh dear,
I leave the thread for a couple of days and it looks like I'm bumped. Please count me in - 50 pieces would probably do but 100 to be on the safe side.

Does anyone have any experience with yielding matched sets of 044s? If I wanted four sets of six matched devices how many should I start with?

Don't worry, you haven't been bumped just yet....I consider that a conformation....as for the matching if that is for a stereo pair I think 100 is more than safe and 50 may just do the trick....however as you were originally signed up for 100 no matter...match 4 groups of 12 and keep spares in case of accidents...

Kevin

Payment Details Coming Soon
PrimeCase
Hi All

I'm going to be sending out payment information to all concerned for the group buy of the IRFP044 Fet's Friday afternoon.

To make sure you know where your money is going I will include a breakdown of costs for the Fet's, shipping to you, a 2.5% overhead which covers the $26 shipping from the distributor and the PayPal charges.

PayPal have a charge rate which is 2.9% of the transaction + $0.30(3.9% for overseas orders)

for example if the order, shipping & 2.5% comes to exactly $100 (nice round figure) this would indicate you would need to add $2.90 +$0.30 to that total bringing the grand total payable to my PayPal account to $103.20. I will include a breakdown to each buyer so they know exactly what they need to Pay, Once the money is received I will e-mail an acknowledgement in return.

Please Note....any potential buyer who has not confirmed their order by Friday A.M will be bumped to the May/June order. I have done my best to convince Richardson that there will possibly be a bigger order next time around if they can keep the excellent price, The first order was placed at 13:00 EST today for 1450 devices, I will be getting a full product catalogue so we can possibly encourage other group orders.

Many Thanks

Payment Information Sent

Hi Guys
I have just sent out payment information to everyone confirmed on the group purchase with a breakdown of accumalitive costs. Please excuse the odd errors with Fet quantity (brain fart on my part) but the totals are all accurate including the PayPal fee of 2.9% for US transactions and 3.9% for all others ....thank heavens for spreadsheets.

If anyone spots any big errors please e-mail me and I'll straighten it out.

I'm currently sitting $1,265 light on my bank account so I'd appreciate notice as early as possible if you cannot continue.

other than that, thanks you for your patience and hopefully we can get to see and hear some of your creations at the end of all of this. Personally I cannot wait, I have heatsinks, 4 transformers and a bucket load of components ready to go...

I expect the first Shipment the first week in April and the second within 2 weeks of that....I'll keep you all updated.

Morning....
I'm impressed. Richardson have pulled out all the stops and all 1450 FET's arrived yesterday afternoon. I plan to start shipping orders in the order payment was recieved on Saturday morning, for the US purchasers I'd expect to see them start arriving late next week and the foreign orders about a week after that. I have some address labels to print and I'm about ready to go. Cutting the packaging tubes seems to be the only challenge thus far.

thanks for your patience

Kevin

PS...anyone on the order list who hasn't yet paid, please e-mail myself to arrange payment over the next week as your FET's will be passed to potential buyers on the wait list who are still interested. I will e-mail those who I haven't recieved payment from.
Michi124
That's good news from Kevin - since I'm first on the wait list.

Please let me know when there are some 044's left...
bzo
yes, great news, looking forward to getting them! Did they end up coming in the tubes of 25? I hope the FETs in each tube are well matched as people have experienced in the past.
PrimeCase
Well....I'm not about to match them just to find out but, yes, to answer your question they are in tubes of 25 which will be halved for shipping purposes but all users will get multiples of 25 from the same tubes. rather than 12 here and 13 there......that way we can minimize matching issues (I hope).

I have figured it out that the standard envelope for GPM will house 50 Fet's and the large envelope should handle 100 with no problems....

I'll be printing labels and ESD instrutions this evening and paying a visit to the post office on Saturday Morning....

Kevin, got mine today, too! Thanks for your efforts! Little by little I'm gathering the parts for my new Aleph-X. One day I may even find time to start putting them together!

Thanks again!

Surprisingly, mine were waiting for me in my mail box when I got home. That was really fast. Thank you for organizing the group buy Kevin!

Hey...what can I say.....no problem guys.....I'm more surprised than you are given the speed....Lance Armstrong must be delivering them by bicycle.....

Anyhow, according to my memory they are all coded the same, direct from Mexico and even the QC guys have a little rubber stamp for the boxes of 1000 they arrive in.

100 more were paid for this evening so we are down to 200 or so remaining, those on the wait list will be served in the order they were received.

thanks again

Kevin

Group Order Officially Closed!!!!!

Thanks guys for making this a success, I have enough people in the wings to complete the orders now that everything has been squared away, Anyone else who wishes to organize something like this it isn't too bad but realize the potential pitfalls (at one point I thought Richardson had vanished, that wasn't too good for my health).....If anyone else wishes to do this call Ilene at Richardson Electronics and see what she can quote you......

thanks again All.....I'll still be around but I'm not sure I'm going to organize another.

Michi and Byteboy on the wait list will be the final orders filled subject to payment of course.

speak soon all

Kevin

If more people are interested and somebody can organize a second group order than I am interested for 100 pieces.

No problem Pete.....how did the packaging hold up?.....I'm more concerned for overseas orders mainly

Kevin

Kevin,
the packaging was fine. The parcel was smaller than I was expecting but they were all in there so your idea of cutting the tubes works well.

Thanks again

Pete.

incidentally the priority mail envelope that I used for all domestic orders will handle up to 200 FET's with no problem. I thought it would be a bit more of a squeeze but it turned out ok.

Thanks Kevin, I got mine today.

They snuck through customs too, so the total in my hands cost was $CDN1.39 per FET. Amazing!

Hi Folks
I might be interested in getting into the group buy (or might order from Richardson directly if its too late) for these FETs. I wanted to know how many FETs I need to buy as a general rule if I need to match them for the Aleph-X? any ideas here?

thanks
