i know this probably isnt the best place to put this due to the fact that this whole site has many other audio places but in diyvideo our audio is or should be just as important to our movie experience and thus for my setup i was thinking about the logitech z-680's untill now, does anyone think this will work? http://www.technoscout.com/general/...er&OVMTC=phrase

Hmmm...If you got the space get the logitechs z-680 or even better, the klipsch promedia 5.1, or a 5.1 speaker system with a receiver, it will sound much better.

I have the Z640s and I loved them when I first got them but their limitations become quickly apparent..I upgrade to a Stero 5.1 system instead and for not too higher than a high end PC multimedia one :) it all depends on what you need it for i guess.

http://www.tigerdirect.com/applicat...-6182&CatId=492 either this or http://www.technoscout.com/general/...er&OVMTC=phrase which one should i get?

I plan on having about a 145" screen, i'll watch high def tv and normal tv upscaled with my htpc as well as dvds upscaled in the same way, i will only be playing one video game on it and thats quake 3 arena against my friends online, no other video games, so i want a 5.1 surround sound system that can provide good enough sound for all of this and listening to music, so if im going the normal speaker route its definetly the z680s, but i want to know should i go with those or this new contraption, and money is not an object when it omes to the sound system!

I bought my HTS-20s fo rless than the Z-680s take a look http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dl...item=3064502178 :)

But if you have to choose go with Z-680s over that other one..or ask or look for people who have had them.

ok settled im gettin the z680s for $279 on tigerdirect.com
dracul
is the subwoofer powered separately?
freeupyermind
for what?
dracul
The subwoofer needs to be powered seperately for a decent base power. That means it has plug to the wall in addition to the signal comming from your sound card and or main amp/controller. Cheap systems may not have that in which case I would not recommend you get it.

You look for term Powered Subwoofer.

i already ordered the z-680's

Good choice, those speakers arent bad.
Negative Design
the Z-680s are High end speakers, their powered. My Z-640s are powered I dont see why its bigger brother wouldn't be :)
those speakers are sick...but their not balanced, many have siad they sound too "boomy" its great but not for subtle sounds liek classical or whatever.
freeupyermind
doesn't the z-680's have treble and bass control and all that? plus windows media player and some others have equalizers on them, those would fix the problem wouldn't it?
Negative Design
I hope so,Thats the first place I'd look if I wanted to solve that problem, but many people still say its boomy and even in many reviews too maybe its not a huge issue.

Forget windows and bass and treble, if u have a creative audigy2 or a sblive card u can fully control the sound of the speaker, the parametric eq is fully programable, u can basically make a transitstor radio speaker sound like a bose am5 satelite, its wicked and most dont know how to use it thats why they dont even know about it or can get the right sound, if its boomy u need to take out the 120hz - 200hz freqs, this can be done either via the parametric eq or by ajusting the crossover, most of these self powerd systems have green cap capcitors in them, if u change the value to a lower value u will get a deeper bass, booming is the bad designing of the bass enclosure and also the bad acustics in the room, most of these cheap pre made comp speakers dont have cotton wadding inside the enclosure either and thats a main cause aswell, its easy enough to tame down just a few small modds the manufactures didnt take into acount, hence the price, a good sounding set of speakers weather 2channel or 7 channel should sound spot on with no bass or trebble added, the only thing u should need to ajust is the sub level.

ace3000_1
The audigy2 is far better, it has way better dacs and a tone more features, it is also programable.

As for your last post, best to mind your language and calm down abit.

im sorry, i know what i shouldve done, but i looked around for quite a bit to find a 7.1 system that was inexpensive and had enough wattage and it totally killed to see creative has it, well if anyone is interested in mine, im hoping for 280 becuase shipping is 30 bucks so really youd be getting it for 250 but an extra 30 for shipping, ive only had them a couple days!

if you are looking for a cheap way to get loud, high quality sound fom your PC then I would sugest avoiding computer speakers. Just hook your comp up to an old amp and use some normal speakers:D. this makes things much easier and more configurable (for example you can run the audio from your dvd and/or vcr directly to the amp). To get suround sound you can use multiple sets of speakers or you can get a winamp plugin to time delay your audio and make it sound suroud soundish.

I have my comp hooked up to an amp and I love it:) I dont think I would ever go back to computer speakers. i have about 800 wats between my office and my bedroom("office" in this case meaning a converted laundry room next to my bedroom:D). i manely listen to music on my comp so i dont use suround sound very often. However there is a plugin for winamp that gives you a virtual room, alowes you to place virtual speakers and dose a fairly good job of giving the listener the inpresion of the virtual speakers:).

PS. If you care about sound quality(or quality of any other kind for that matter) I would strongly recomend using winamp insted of windoes media player. Winamp:angel: (but in a good way) windoes media player:devilr: (but in a bad way)
freeupyermind
i actually use different media players for different reasons, i use winamp, windows media player, media player classic, and windvd, and in terms of the amp, well i dont have anyting else i would hook into it except my pc, and i want real surround sound, not winamps cheap version of it!
