Slightly off topic: If I were to buy a Sony Mini-DV in the US to use in Europe, what kind of trouble would I run into?
Is the Mini-DV recording format identical in terms of frame rate, number of lines and color coding?
If so, I could read the videos into my computer via FireWire, do the DV to PAL conversion there before writing to DVD and never know the difference?
The only difference would be that the camera's analog output would provide an NTSC signal?
Thanks,
Eric |

Do a search in a few HT forums, try searching for ntsc pal conversion in the display and dvd sections.
My experiance is that the different framerates will distort motionshots ie they will not be smooth. |

if you are capturing to firewire no problem you can convert in software.
If you are going to play on tv or vcr form the svhs or composite output it may be a problem. |

| There are PAL and NTSC standards for MiniDV. PAL DV has more lines than NTSC and runs at a lower framerate. When you'd do the conversion from NTSC to PAL, you'd end up resizing the video, which leads to some quality loss, and if you didn't want to sacrifice quality, you'd sacrifice a bit of the image. NTSC also runs at a higher framerate than PAL, so if you were to convert, the audio would be slightly faster and may get desynchronized from the video. If you're only going to be using it for playback on your PC, leave it in NTSC for the best quality from that camera, but if you're going to put video onto DVD, you will run into problems along the way. |
