... I ordered a 600 watt (17,000 lumen) quartz-halogen DYS lamp

I'm broke and can't afford an MH setup right now so I think this halogen bulb will have to be a temporary alternative.

However, I didn't order a socket for it and I was wondering if it'd be realitivly safe just to just solder some thick wires onto the leads of the bulb. I know, this wouldn't be very safe if I had my hands in there while it was plugged in but when it's running, it won't arc or anything will it?

it wont arc out but the solder will melt therfore the wires will come off and possible short out onto somthing else or the case causing a fire or blowing out a fuse, the bulbs get red hot, im talking 600+deg C, solder melts at about 350degC so thats why the holders are made out of ceramic and have thick contacts, its risky and i wouldnt try it.

Hey I would have looked around If I were you I just got a ballast and a small mh bulb local for only $65

That halogen is an oven man, sell it on eBay and get something decent...used MH rigs go for pretty cheap on eBay, check in here before you buy anything.

hmm... I suppose I'll order the socket and test this out.. just as a temporary solution.

I'll eventually try to save up for the diylabs MH kit. Unless I can find a small bulb like that with an electronic ballast for under $40, I won't be using anything other than the halogen any time soon as my budget right now is <$40.

You do realize that buying parts like this is going to cost you MORE money in the long run.

You spend 40 bucks now... only to want a MH setup in the future, which will run you upwards of 100-150 bucks... now instead of just spending the 100-150 your up to 200 on the bulb setup alone.

Wait, and save... it'll be cheaper :)

I would like to know it too. and some specs on bulb?
Khmann002
Well the bulb is only a 175watt mh phillips but its the size of a lemon. And for the ballast its a magnetic one and it can use up to a 250watt mh lamp.

So, where did you get it, if I may ask?

A local Lighting shop in PA
