This section of the forums is essentially for anything pertaining to Pass Labs equipment, ideas, designs, whatever.
It includes both people's projects, and Pass' work itself. |

Konnan101,
You will not find the schematics for the X and XA products on the web site as they are current products. Mr. Pass was kind enough to allow us to reproduce the no longer in production Aleph series of amplifiers for our own personal use. He was kind enough to allow us to copy his design for our personal use, so I caution you about trying to reproduce a current product. As a beginner, you would be best off to start with one of the Zen series of amplifiers. Nelson designed the Zen series so that the audio amatuer could learn about the design and fabrication of solid state amplifiers. I have an Electrical Engineering degree and I have learned alot from the PassDIY site. You will too. |

Since the subject has come up again, let me make
a couple of comments:
The Zen amp design is the property of Pass Labs, as are the
other articles which have appeared featuring other designs
and variations. Zen amp and Aleph and SuperSymmetry are
trademarks of Pass Labs, having been established through
interstate commerce some years ago. Zens are not currently
in production, but will be before long through First Watt, a
corporation belonging to Nelson Pass. (You will be able to see
a First Watt amplifier at CES at the Pass display).
There is another Zen amp on the market, a tube design from
Decware, and although Pass's use of the name precedes
Decware, the two companies have agreed not to argue about
it, primarily because the tube/solid state distinction is enough
to avoid consumer confusion, and such legal activities are more
costly than they would typically be worth.
While a number of Pass circuits are patented, it is the policy of
the company not to concern itself with do-it-yourself-not-for-
profit efforts.
We are, however, very protective of the trademarks.
It is the policy of the company to publish the service manuals
for products which are no longer in production, but we restrict
their distribution during the active sales life of the product, thus
you will see the schematics of the Alephs and some others on
our web site, but not X and XA product.
Nevertheless, there have been successful and semi-successful
efforts to reverse engineer some current Pass products in this
forum. We expect this and are pleased that there is such
interest.
Pass is not a one-trick pony, and so our response will be to
continue our work and remain ahead of the curve.

I have seen mentions of the First Watt amplifier. Looking foreward to seeing the details. My power needs are very low, a 10 watt amp is overkill.
The Zen V6 is also something that is much desired. Time is on my side.
BTW, my Zen V4 is very revealing of preamp quality. I tried first with a 6080 tube linestage, then BUF634, a Steve Eddy buffer, and now the Tao headhone amp. All have been improvements. I cannot see how a passive could ever get good quality sound at mW pwer levels.
Someday I may figure out why it is so demanding of the preamp.
Happy New Year to All!
