Hi guys... first of all, sorry for my bad english.... but i hope you understand most of it.
I have a diy-beamer that consists of a 250W halogen OHP and a natcomp 15" TFT screen. So far, the results are quite ok...
But have a look yourself:
now, i think about buying a 150W hqi, because i found a very cheap dealer. I used the search-option here to find some results using 150W, but everyone seems to use 250W hqis..
I just want to know how big the difference between 150W and 250W HQIs is, and if the 150W HQI is much better than the 250W halogen.
i hope you understood my questions :-D
bye

heya there basti, the 150w hqi is suficient for night time veiwing for a ohp setup, however it will be alot brighter then your 250w halogen, the 150w hqi's are 14000lm while the 250w hqi's are 20000lm so there isnt much in it to be honest but because you are using the ohp route wich has to light up a reasonable sized area the extra 6000lm will help over the 150w hqi, ive got a 150w cdm-t, its a magic bulb thats single ended and is the length of a standard computer mouse, it also has 12000hrs rated life span and looses about 2000lm from start of life to end of life, where as the 250w hqi looses alot of brightness over the life span typical of 6000lm + and the colour isnt as stable, the cdm-t range is colour constant rated where as the colour stays the same through out the life of the bulb +/- 10%, also in the cdm-t range they have a uv filter built into the glass to block uv rays and that will buy you life time on your lcd, as in colour fading reduced, and it will also save you time and effort to fit a uv filter to your ohp setup if the current model of your ohp doesnt have one already installed, so depending on the screen size u want, the time of day u will be projecting and the power bill u can aford its totally upto u .
hope it helped

heya buddy, try some stage shops, they are about the cheapest, the bulbs are about $45 but ive seen cheaper before, i had some links for the light in the usa but ive deleted the links as i can get them cheaper over here in europe, here is one place i have left though they are about $37 in this place,
CDM150/T6/942
150W G12 4000K METAL HALIDE LAMP

P.S try to get the cdm-t in the GE brand cos they have the highest output of light, the best colour stability and and longest life. |

I did a investigation for a year ago on some bulbs:
Halogen 250W / 24V 50h C.temp 3400K = 10000lm
Halogen 250W / 24V 300h C.temp 3200K = 8000lm
Halogen 400W/ 36V 50h C.temp 3200K = 14500lm
mastercolour cdm-t 150W /942 6000h C.temp 4200K = 12900lm
mastercolour cdm-t 150W /830 6000H C.temp 3000K = 14000lm
HQI 250W 2000h C.temp 6000K = 20000lm
So if you use the 250W 50h bulb you will only get a boost with 3000lm with the cdm-t bulb.
I use the cdm-t bulb myself and Iīm very happy with it. |

heya mathis, the GE cdm-t bulb is 14000lm and is 12000hrs so my wholsaler said , i have yet to email GE for the specs, but the wholesaler told me they dont bother with the phillips as the GE has better specs in the cdm-t bulb, this company is a wholesaler for phillips too! lol, i got my bulb from the uk for about 16pounds from memory, socket was 2pounds and the ballast about the same as the bulb, glad to hear your happy with your bulb, what setup do u have it on?

I guess the 150w Halogen does not put out enough heat to worry about?
I also have a 150 watt hqi Metal Halide. I have not fully tested with my lcd but I think I would prefer at least a 250 Metal Halide. It may allow me to project onto a grey screen which mean deeper blacks and therefore the illusion of sharper image. |

| I havenīt found any shops that sells the GE-bulb, so I canīt say whats right and wrong, but the Philips bulb is 12900lm and 6000h. Are you really sure itīs the 4200K version you got the spec on ? 6000h or 12000h doesnīt matter, the bulb will never last that long, not in a pj setup. Everytime you start the lamp, it will reduce the life more than when it burns. So with normal use it will last 2000h maybe. Iīm using it in a ohp-setup with a condenserlens. But Iīm working on a new design, that use 99% of the light from the bulb, a ohp-design only use <70%. |

ya the phillips is 6000hrs and the lumens u posted is correct, thats why i got suprised when this company told me about this GE bulb, mines the 4200k version, i dont know about it lasting 2000hrs but ya everytime u do start it it takes life from it, thats why mines only been started 3 times for testing, they are a comercial bulb and they are designed to be run all of the time so stoping and starting kills them as u say, but i will use this projector prety much 7-8hrs at a time everyday maybe lol so ill get my moneys worth out of the bulb in that respect, good to hear your making a new light engine also, good luck with it and keep us posted on it.

here is some lamp life burning info and how its measured
[Average Rated] Life
The median time it takes for a lamp to burn out. For example, a 60-watt Soft White Bulb can be expected, on average, to burn for 1,000 hours. Based upon continuous testing of lamps in laboratories, the 1,000 hour rating is the point in time when 50% of the test samples have burned out and 50% are still burning. Unless otherwise noted Fluorescent and CFL life assumes 3 hours average operating time per start. Unless otherwise noted HID life assumes 10 hours average operating time per start

This reminds me of a line in the film "Heat" with Deniro and Pacino.
Deniro and this hypie long hair bank thief organizer are sitting on a porch strategizing and Deniro asks him:
Where do you get this stuff from?
Organizer says: Its all out there man, information floating around all over the FxxxN place you just got reach out there and grab it. |
