Looking more closely at the panel, it isn't the only one to adopt this tactic, far from it. Almost all of the panels sold in the mass market do not operate at 24 bits (16.7 million colors) but at 18 bits (262,144 colors). Yet all of them still claim to display 16 million colors.

24-bit colors exist.
In theory every <number>-bits can exist. However in reality only a few are used.
Above 16 bit doesnt really matter (opinions may vary, but a normal person wouldnt see the difference between 16 bit and 24 or 32 bit) |

wout: U say that above 16Bit doesn't really matter, but try looking at the gradient in 16Bit and then in 24 Bit, Then U can see a difference. from 24-32 there is no difference, that is because a lot of the colours in 32 bit We cannot see anyhow.

I'm not sure it's the same with non computer related stuff, but:
when you set your desktop to 24Bits or 32Bits, you have 16M colors for both! The 8 other bits are used for transparency or something like this. |
