video artifacts from long cable runs - Click HERE for Original Thread

Hello,

I have a PC run to my TV across the room. Thru the pc I watch videos, however the pc and tv are pretty far apart, and i have to run about 40 ft of cable. On the audio, i had a bad hum and lots of noise -- so i upgraded to a better sound card which helped a little then i built the balanced line driver on http://sound.westhost.com/index.html which eliminated all the noise -- sounds perfect.

my question is, in the case of the audio, i was easily able to hear the signal being distorted, as well as the hum and harmonics of the hum -- for the video -- i do not know what to look for. When i play a video, it looks pretty clear, but it could probably be better. Are there any test patterns i can load up and look for artifcats, patterns, blurs, etc so i can notice if i need to do something about the video signal? If i do notice a problem, would a balanced line driver possibly solve this? I am not familiar with how unmodulated video works, and i dont know the frequencies it operates at so i wouldnt even know what kind of op amps to look at. If anyone can provide some advice, or perhaps a link to how unmodulated video works it would be greatly appreciated. Thank you.

note: cable length is about 40', video is taken from a chaintech geforce4 ti4400 s video output. s video to rca converter, then the rca is run 40'. software being used is TVTool. I know running s-video straight to the tv would produce a nicer picture, however s-video cable is expensive. Ive been thining about buying s-video connectors and soldering them to cat-5 -- anyone ever try this?
