Most car cd players do about 20wrms, friends one manual said 19wrms. I'd suggest pulling a dead one apart and seeing what chip they use. They use the cars power rail, no power supply stage, channels are just bridged.

Jaycar do a TDA something (the only one they've got) that does 70w max of 14.4v (about 35rms). Its not really quality but does quite a good job.

Gutted a blown MEI car amp yesterday and found out that it uses the Toshiba TA8210 IC. This amp WAS fully functional when I put it into storage about 7 years ago. Try to connect it up and smelled something exotic. Open it up and saw a blackened resistor...... Will troubleshoot it someday.:bawling:

Tripath also has some nice looking multichannel chips. Some of them are more or less specifically for car audio.

Have a look at http://www.st.com/stonline/products/selector/203.htm

This list contains many ICs amp: check out for the ones with 14.4 V "typical supply voltage" they're right made for car audio;
