mabe a good lcd monitor its only 14"?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?! - Click HERE for Original Thread
Video Freak
I was looking around the web and found the NORCENT LM143SB lcd monitor( do a web search on it) It is xga only 250-1 contrast( not great not bad) only thing I cant find is its responce time. just a thought
Negative Design
i also am interested in one, their cheap on ebay! even the retail is good, 190$ at pricewatch.
I would liek to see one in action...
Video Freak
yea 14" would be perfect size so the ends wouldnt be chopped off on a regular fresnel, also one benefit for buying it retail is according to pricewatch you can get it with free shipping , usually on ebay shipping on monitors is around 30.00 so to make it worth wile to buy something off ebay it would have to be 160 or less, granted thats still a " used Monitor" usually so Id say it would have to be 130.00 + shipping for myself to consider buying a used one. just my thoughts. and 250-1 I believe My proxima 9210 is 100-1 or 150-1 and that looks dammmmmmmn good so 250-1 would be just fine with me.

EDIT; LOL I just saw you said you would like to see one in action, not AUCTION. Misreading by me but yea still my logic applies........or so I think
Property
I'd like to here about one in action as well.
silveradoking02
they are at walmart for $174 i wonder how easy they are to take apart. hmm,
matthew
Video Freak

henrik_mork
Is this true.... $174.00 from Walmart with $8 shipping...what a deal!
All we need now are some schematics, or someone brave enough to take the plunge and rip it apart, LOL.

What does this iLIYAMA have to do with these beautiful norcents?
Property
Hmm...I wonder if there is a way to get one from Walmart for free by claiming false advertising.

Or does Walmart have a newer version because those walmart specs are AMAZING!
henrik_mork
Property, you're right...the Iiyama's have nothing to do with the Norcents.

The Norcents (or re-badged Acer's) don't seem to be available to us Non- North Americans, so one of our co-contributors kindly suggested an alternative 14" monitor that is available to us very cheaply.

But the specs look not so good...
Video Freak
Im gonna call a few local walmarts to see if they have this and what its specs are( I hope others will do the same also) and once I hear something I will post back in the thread, But even 250-1 contrast ratio isnt really that bad, My projector has 150-1 and It looks good to me.
bitbyter
Well I can't find any listings for a LM143 but there does seem to be a LM143SB and it doesn't look that hot, an ok 14" but nothing amazing. Also Norcent (on their own site) doesn't list a LM143 at all, not even in their support section. Seem kind of strange to me...you know the old saying...If something seems to be to good to be true...it usually is!! Also, if this is a re-badged Acer FP450 (200:1 CR & 60 ms Response Time) I'd definately stay away from it.

P.S: I e-mail norcent for specs, so we'll see what they have to say.

The price is good though, it's bout 120 EUR. Seems that the CR you will get follows the function EUR:1 ...

It looks like that new 14" monitors aren't made anymore, just panels for the laptops :-(.
Video Freak
hummm called 5 Walmarts and they dont carry it in the stores, Only online, So Untill I can get some deff specs Im not holding my breath.
Property
Man those Walmart specs are starting to seem WAY WAY WAY WAY off.

Isn't there a way to cheat them out of a few Norcents for listing such COMPLETELY BOGUS specs? Or get a price reduction or something....Maybe order it and then complain your *** off?
Property
But there IS a possiblity that this is model LM143 and not the LM143sb because walmart lists both the LM153 AND LM 153sb
bitbyter
So what is the difference between regular and sb models? Norcent doesn't list anything with a "sb" in the model number. But under technical specs for the LM153 they do mention that a built in TV feature is "optional"
Video Freak
OK I have searched and Yes the walmart specs are off, Its only 250-1 contrast ratio and no there isnt a way to get anything outa them for making a typing error( every websie has a clause to that effect) so Nope But still for 170 range 250-1 contrast thats not too shabby, whats the I-O data and Nec 1545V? contrast wise.
Property
They also say 1280x1024 resolution,
.264 dot pitch and 48" cord length.
Property
This looks like it *could* be a VERY good deal.

This
Video Freak
this is what I get doing other searches they all match up, the person at wallmart whom typed the page musta been drinking,,, Specs are........................

this is from http://www.directron.com/lm143sb.html the dot pitch is not .264 its .279 does that make a lot of difference? Im not keen on the whole dot pitch thing anywaysI emailed the website above as to its response time, I will post back when I get more info. L8er
Video Freak
property the page with those monitors you just linked to said they only had 200,000 colors, not enough colors
Property
262,000 colors. Aren't those like the "minimum level to be visually pleasing to the human eye" or something? Because the rest of the *^$%^% specs on that monitor are REALLY good.

This is was norcent sent me...curious...i've already sent a follow up mail:

Dear Sir,

The correct spec is 1028x768

property whats norcents email addy? I still wanna know response time. GEESE they couldnt give us all the info in the one email, such lazy workers.

EDIT, as to your question on the amount of colors thats not enough to make a good projector most EVEN older lcd projection panels have 500,000 + colors, Look for at least 1 million.( for a new monitor that is)
Property
Ok here's the whole scoop on the Norcent direct from Norcent...not a bad deal at all!!! I think we may have found a winner:

The contrast ratio is 250:1 and dot pitch is .264. I’m sorry for any inconvenience, I’ll have walmart to change it asap

Damn...forgot to ask response time...i'll ask real quick since he seems to be at his computer.
Video Freak
lol OK cool I will keep my eye open for your post.
Property
I can't believe that other one that i posted has only 260,000 colors but the rest of the specs are TOP QUALITY....what the *^#$*....why?
Video Freak
I dunno, Its usually kinda a trade off, For example, when LCD projection panels were all the rage, as soon as say panels jumped from 640 x480 to 800 x 600 When resolution increased contrast decreased, My proxima 9210 ( lcd projector) is 16 million colors and 150-1 contrast, But now a days ( years later) you will find 3,000-1 contrast ratio and 2-4,000 ansilumens, granted the projectors of that quality will be ungodly priced in the 9-20,000 price range. So in short, manufacturers make dumb decisions.

30msec, and 40(max)

Nat. REs: 1028x768
pitch: .264
Contrast: 250:1
Price: $179.99 Walmart

Not bad at all.
Property
Oh yeah and size 14"

Norcent email:

Video Freak
yep 30 ms is about as low as they go( unless you wann spend 600 bucks on a lcd monitor) no thank you, Yep I think Im sencing a charge on my credit card coming in the not so distant future. SWEETNESSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSS
Property
Hey i just found out that 262,000 colors is 18bit color and 16bit color definetly looks acceptable on my computer so what's up? 18bit color seems ok...???
Psionic
30ms isn't as low as they go for the budget panel market.

I just bought a Viewsonic VP150M LCD for $129
300:1 CR, 25ms Response

I've seen BenQ's go for ~$200
They are 450:1 CR and 16ms response
Video Freak
where did you get the viewsonic for 120.00 range? spill the beans We need to know LOL
Spinnaker
Has anyone decided to get the Norcent LCD monitor from Wal-mart?
Video Freak
Not yet, Specs still seem good to me and it would fully fit on a OHP so I suspect I will try it, once I get the cash of course so Untill then I guess Im the only one, So yea I will try it eventually Unless I see a drastic drop in 15" monitors or a drastic increase in specs for them.
henrik_mork
I recently won a 14" Panaflat LC40 TFT monitor on ebay for £16 GBP. The screen has a a deep scratch about 1 inch long but it doesn't seem to have damaged the LCD inside.
It is XGA, with 50ms response and a typical CR of 120:1.
Fairly basic spec, but better than my powerview 820 (except the PV is 25ms), and it might provide good dismantling practice before I really spend some cash on this project.

It looks reasonably easy to take apart, the only downside is it came without a power supply. I have a few spare laptop PSU's, and one that suits the 14V 3.3A requirement of the monitor perfectly - but the barrel jack is too small. I need a new one, about 5.5mm diameter, with a 1mm centre pin - any idea where I might source such a thing.......I was looking at Radio Shack's Adaptaplugs.....any ideas?

Try www.maplin.co.uk

or

www.rswww.com

one of these two should have what you want. I got a 26pin high density plug which is what my panel needed and wired it up myself from rswww
Mobius
Norcent LCD:

I recently got this panel under the impression that it had a contrast ratio of 300:1. It has a CR of 250:1 as other members have noted but i decided to use this panel despite this discrepency.

The Great Stuff

The LCD is very easy to dismantle and modify. The cable which connects the controller to the LCD is composed of 10 high gauge wires (~26AWG) which use a connector reminiscent of the connections used on a motherboard to connect LEDs, reset switches and so forth. The controller can possibly be used on other LCDs. A four pin connector has "grnd, rx, tx, 5V" silkscreened on the board next to it. Using a serial utility it could be possible to enable the NTSC feature of the controller after modifying the controller with the appropriate video socket. Browsing the OSD indicates that NTSC is supported by the controller but has been disabled. The main controller has a small daugherboard roughly 1.5x2.5" (with the main board being rougtly 4x4") which connects to the afformentioned LCD connector. Changing the daughterboard will allow for different types of LCDs to be connected.

The Not so Great Stuff

There is a design fault with the monitor. Within the construction of the monitor the daughtercard is forcibly bent by space constrictions. This fault failed the first monitor i had making be send it back. Upon receipt and two days usage of the second monitor, a pink color was subsituted for some gray colors (exceptionaly annoying). I was able to rectify the situation by right the daughtercard

Conclusion

This a good monitor if you want the controller and an LCD to experiment with. It could be chancy if you buy one of these but i've had success. I could get pictures of the controller/LCD if anyone wants.
Spinnaker
Please post pictures, and I am unclear if this lcd could, or couldnt be used for projection.

Hello again back to the thread, Yes MO if you can post many many pics that would be great, Im still considering this LCD. Thanks again:nod:     :goodbad:

one more vote to see pictures, this looks like an OK test subject, Now that I have a screen and acceptable lighting,I find my 640X480 panel isnt doing it for me, Ineed more res :)

any pictures?
Mobius
Apologies.

Due to the poor quality of my dated digital camera I have held off of posting pictures. I had to wait until the lighting conditions were just right outside to obtain these poor quality pictures. I'm going to try to get a camera and use it.
Mobius
Horrible image of the actual LCD
Video Freak
Mobius Humm so did you have to lengthen a cable or not? hard to tell from the pics, On the camera situation get a cheap one from ebay 30 bucks or so Mine is a crappy one about 35.00 and you can see from my posts that it works well. Keep posting Info we are still all interested.
Negative Design
I have a feeling this will work...but my only concern is the CR:1 i would much rather have a 450:1 :(

I think its safe for you to run out and buy one VF:nod:   ;)
Video Freak
negative I was going to but someone said walmart.com IS Out of stock bahhhhhhhhhhhhhhh and no pother place online still carries it I will keep checking walmart and look for a alternative maybe.

Walmart is out, but I picked one up on Ebay last week. There is another:

http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dl...6&category=3698

I just got mine yesterday and have begun breaking it down. With any luck I'll be done this evening with photos.
Negative Design
Woot! alright :) im lookin forward to your results Sap,

Good Luck :) ;)
Video Freak
Yea I cant wait to see pics also, LOL I made the thread But am not the person whom bought the lcd yet( ironic) anyways they want like 34.00 to ship that monitor, am i Just outa the loop or does it really cost that much to ship a monitor? geese 34.00 could feed a whole family of 6 at mcdonalds LOL
Mobius
"Mobius Humm so did you have to lengthen a cable or not?"

No, in my design it was not necessary. If you should have to lengthen the cable it would be excessively easy seeing as it is not a flex cable.

LCD and Shipping

You can pick up this Norcent on Pricewatch.com for $198 shipped as i have.

Better pics

I'm going to take the LCD/controller to work tommorow and take pics of them. They have a really sweet Sony Mavica which should produce superior image quality.
sapofeo
Sadly, I killed mine when taking it apart. I don't know what I did, but the panel displays nothing now. Very bummed.
Mobius
Here is the better picture I took at work. Note the LCD connector, very easy to extend if you should need to.
TheGiver
Has anyone plopped this one onto an OHP yet? The price makes this one tempting, but someone mentioned that pinks are replaced with dithered greys/reds... If anyone has pictures of a projection done with this panel, please post them.
