should i replace it anyways? its all loose feeling when i turn it, so i open everything all up, ohm it, and its fine. what's the story?

If you have a scope, just run a sinewave through the pot and into the scope. Then just sit there and move the pot all the way along it's travel a couple of times. That way you should visually see any glitches in the tracking.
