S-5 K16LS in enclosure - Pics - Click HERE for Original Thread

I have got the K16LS (and optional tone control) in a custom made enclosure. Next is the decision as to how to best beautify it. You will see the aluminium welds that show up pretty good, which I will likely grind down. Then I need to decide if I want to paint the enclosure or stay bright metal.

I have the edcor OPTs in there too.

Sounds good and looks pretty cool I think.

Get it Gold anodized but polish it up first.

Find a local powdercoater, and get it done in powdercoat wrinkle black. It's looks really good, and the finish is very durable. It might cost anywhere from $10 to $30, depending on who is available in your area. If you are anywhere near Newark, DE, I can recommend a few places. If not, try the yellow pages. Often, the guys who powdercoat parts for motorcycles will do amplifier chassis parts for reasonable prices. Haggle with the guy a bit, and suggest that your chassis can go in with a few other parts the next time he does a batch.

This started life as a bare aluminum enclosure. You could see the corner welds on it, too.

Yes, that black "krinkle" effect is high on my list. They sell krinkle paint in a can....used it to redo some old car instrument panel meters a while back, but the real long term best solution if I paint it is powder coat. That goes with my intent to make this have a retro military look.

Anodize is a good choice too - if I keep it shiny.

Thanks for the suggestion -

Crinkle paint is cool but It just never grew on me.

Nice work 123rmp. How many hours did the enclosure take?

Hi there

Nice looking amp. Black or blue powdercoat will add some accent.

I got a question. I also built K16LS recently, everything was fine and the hum was really low compared to their previous version, but I didn't like the bass from it.

So which Edcor did you use, and do you like it?

Thanks

Doug

Looks great! I think it would look awesome once the welds are ground down if it were buffed to within an inch of its life (mirror shiny) and then clear coated. You would have something relatively unique that highlights the excellent metalwork you have done. Paint or powdercoat, bahhhhh humbug - been there, done that! :devilr:

Thanks everyone.

The actual box itself took 1 hour to make out of scrap aluminum at a friend of a friend's toolbox manufacturing company. I gave the guy $65 for the box. It took a lot of measuring and re-measuring to layout the holes. I transferred the measurements into MS Visio, printed out an overlay template, measured some more, test fitted a few things, meansured some more, measured even more, center-punched the holes and started drilling. That took a couple hours once I got going. MEASURE TWICE (or more), CUT ONCE.

The longest time consumer was the wire stripping, connector making, and soldering. Lots of wires! And there are lots of connectors used to facilitate fast repair or swap out of pots, OPTs, lights, meters, switches, etc.

One of the additions I made was a selector switch to choose between inputs. I also bought a relatively cheap pre-amp to allow a phono-input to work, which works really nicely.

The Edcor OPTs are CXPP25-8-5K and I do like them. I have the S5 Tone/Bass control, which is a must, based on a few other comments I've seen.....and I use an equalizer to help. I do like the sound. The bass is not extreme but it suits my ear. I don't need to vibrate the windows.

For sure it is not the best there is (and if you count the hours invested and the extra parts, it is not cheap either) but I made it and I get tremendous satisfactions fooling with it. Guess at one level or another that's why most of us are here.....
