4ohm amp to 8 ohm sub question - Click HERE for Original Thread

Hi, i have just brought a amplifier thats rated at 4ohms, i was thinking of using a peerless xls10, which is rated at 8ohm, can i connect this as it is or shall i use a 4 ohm resistor in parrallel?
which method would be the best?

also will the resistor get very hot and possibly brake, causing damage the amp or sub?

thx Olly

Connect it directly. What the amp rating tells you is the lowest recommended impedance for the amp. Do not use a 4 ohm resistor. That is a complete waste of power and will drop the impedance below 4 ohms.

note: your amp (on 8 ohm load) will produce probably about half the power, then the rated power on 4 ohm load. But it will run cooler (and longer...)

...and you'll be hard pressed to notice the difference, it's only 3 dB. :)

cool, thx guys for clearing that up. cant wait to get started :)
