Pass Along the Migratory Box of Electonic Junk - Click HERE for Original Thread
jackinnj
One of my sons passed along this link:

http://tgimboej.org/Box_Tracking
http://blog.wired.com/geekdad/2008/...reat-inter.html

I am willing to start something like this -- every week or so I sweep off my workbench and into a box go MOSFETs, resistors, BJT's, screws, connectors, etc. -- it takes more time to sort through the stuff, etc., etc.

So I'd start a web-ring -- you get the box take what you want, put in some stuff you don't need and pass it along to the next DIYAUDIO'r.

Flat Rate Box in the U.S. is $9.30 if you purchase the postage on-line.
gmilitano
I saw this on hackaday.com this AM.

I'm going to start one off in Winnipeg, Canada. Any Canadians who want to get on the list please email me. We have some sort of eBay flat rate box that I will look into.

Cheers
SY
That's a GREAT idea. I'm in.

Neat idea, but it seems like the real winner will be the post office. :dodgy:

Basically everyone will be paying $10 to the post office for a grab bag of unknown components.

And what are the rules if any? Say for instance I receive the box; can I empty the entire thing and then throw in a resistor or two and call it even?
SY
You could, but you'll have to live with yourself.
Spasticteapot
I'm in. I need to start clearing out my surplus collection of heatsinks and power transformers.
SY
Dave, pm me your address, you're next in line.

I would get over it eventually.:clown:

But seriously, I think I want to get in on this just to see what ends up in the box. I can guarantee what I put in the box will be worth at least 10x what I take out, if anything.
Cal Weldon
I have a feeling the box will continue to get heavier
Dougie085
Hmm heatsinks and transformers :) I think I'm in.
DigitalJunkie
Pwn!!

I was just thinking of something like this earlier today.

I've got a flat-rate box,and lots of stuff.. Maybe I'll start one!

Dougie085,I've got a bunch of heat sinks and transformers, maybe I'll send the box to you!
Dougie085
The only down side is that a flat rate box is only so big :)
Landoctor
I'm in!
Thanks to all! I have plenty of microcontroller stuff as well as some nice passives to get rid of.

True, but IIRC,the weight limit is something like 60lbs! :devilr:
I shipped a box packed full of iron to a friend,IIRC it was ~35lbs.
Dougie085
I'm pretty sure there is no weight limit. If you can fit it in the box its allowed.
theAnonymous1
It's 70lbs. domestic or 20lbs. international.

I know it doesn't specifically say 70lbs for the flat rate boxes, but ALL priority mail has a 70lb. limit, even the flat rate.
SY
As a practical matter, this will probably have to remain domestic. Customs is a total p.i.t.a.
shallbehealed
I'm in. handful of salvaged vintage motorola fets, say what?
DigitalJunkie
Well,I just grabbed a few 'useful' looking items,and stuffed them in a box. There's a couple heat sinks,and a couple smaller SMPS's and a bigger SMPS,op-amps,class D amp drivers,some small chip-amps,a few white LED's,some 12V lamps that could make some good panel-lamp replacements,etc.

I can't get to the pile of transformers yet,it's buried on the other end of the room. :xeye:
jackinnj
I think this is the "Marquess of Queensbury" rules -- the parcel will be forwarded in order of responses. I already have the label made out for SY, he can pass it along as he pleases. There wasn't a Flat Rate Box at the Short Hills PO, but I expect to find one tomorrow in one of the adjacent burbs here in the Peoples Republic of NJ.
Moondog55
This is a great idea, lets start a list for AUSTRALIA I'm happy to start the ball rolling I've got a couple of abandoned kits here that should be salvagable if you are better with a soldering iron than I am

I'm in the US and would like to be in the ring.

Chris
jackinnj
The postman showed up today with Flat Rate Boxes. So the first of the ring is on toward SY.
SY
w00t!

I've got the next two addresses to pass it on. I promise, this time NO dead fish.
canuhearmenow
I hope you have better luck and cooperation with this then I had.

I designed a nice option for a particular new ATV last year.

Offered to send the design templates to anyone who wanted to build this for theirs. I made it clear that I would ship the drawings out once and then each forum member would ship them to the next guy.

I made up 5 sets of the drawings and sent all 5 out in every direction on my $8 per set. I also sent the addresses of the next members on the list they were supposed to pass then on to.

Out of the 5 original sets, only three were ever sent to the next guys. Out of those three remaining sets only one was ever passed along.

Next thing you know, I see on ebay an exact copy of what I designed being sold for $399. each.

With this idea here, I can see one guy getting the box and thinking, "Hey, this is some nice stuff to add to my collection"!
He will then swear he never got them or shipped the box out and it is lost in the mail.

As hard as we all might try to help out others, we all have to remember there is very little honor among friends and forum members you wouldn't know if you tripped over them at the mall!

Ebay is a prime example of this and for every 1 honest seller there are three scammers that spend every waking minute figuring out how to get over on you and the system.

I love the concept but I had a useless (to me) set of altec XOs that I offered to any forum memeber, (Not here) that wanted them. I even paid the shipping to the guy who spoke up with a need for them. Less then a month later I saw them on ebay with a Buy it now price of $125 and they sold. I know they were the ones I gave away--- serial numbers!

ouch, ouch, ouch...
SY
We'll see.:D

It's departing here tomorrow morning for Dave.
Dougie085
Am I second? Can't remember now haha.
SY
Looks like spasticteapot after Dave, then you. Hope you need heatsinks.;)
theAnonymous1
I know I'm anonymous, but I'm not invisible...... or am I?

:dodgy:
SY
Did you say you were in? If so, I missed it and my apologies.

I'll check my email list and see if I have your address. If you haven't sent it to me, now's the time!
Dougie085
So who do I need to give my address to? lol
croat47
I know that I am a new member with little to show for the inquiry. But, I would like to get in to help jump start. Available for the box:

Vifa DX25TG-04
SS Amp transfos stripped from commercial boxes
LM3875's
Some X-over caps and coils
Some other misc caps, resistors, and what not

Let me know if I make the cut. May even throw in some P17-SJ's

Thanks,
From Eastern Maryland

How about some blue crab, Old Bay -- maybe a little wooden hammer and some brown construction paper on which to pound the poor devils.
SY
Aaron, it's OK, don't tell, the surprise is the best part.

Over near Ocean City? I hear that blue crabs are almost gone.
croat47
Great!

Well, I also realized it's an "electronics" box...not a "speaker" box. Magnets get heavy.

In general, crabs are not doing well. And the gas/market speculators are driving the watermen out of business...could be the best thing for them...the crabs that is. But, we had some very nice #1's a few weeks ago. Procured through a friend...best we've had in a long time.

Let me know when my address is needed!

I was being a bit cynical at the start of this thread, so I can understand if my request to participate was overlooked. It's there is post #10 if you look hard enough though.;)
gregorx
Great Idea. I have a ton of stuff to contribute please let me know when you need my address.
jackinnj
I could send another package -- first one to PM me will get another flat rate box -- your responsibility is to send it along to the next migrant.
klm1
I have some tubes/transformers and odds/ends I could donate...

I have lurked too long in the shadows,
time to donate projects I may never get to...
croat47
Just checking ion status. Worth a Wiki for the list and addresses?
SY
Sent to Guy #2.
croat47
Cool. Should of checked my spelling. I'm surprised nobody asked what valence state I was in...

yeah, yeah.

Did you ever hear about the pig who knew karate? His name was Pork Chop. Hi-ya!
jackinnj
2nd package is going to LanDoctor -- I've been out of state for a couple days with limited access to a computah. I'll give him the forwarding address.
Spasticteapot
I'm a bit confused as to what's going on with this, but I need to get rid of some transformers.

I think SY mailed the box out to me, but after looking back on the first page you asked to join in before I did. This might turn out better for you in the long run as I plan on adding some nice goodies to the box. I doubt I will take anything out of it.

I don't know if a second box going around is the best idea; it might just cause confusion.
DaveM
The box is not here yet, but is on it's way. I have some surprises to add and can hopefully pull out some treasures as well.
77seriesIII
I would like to throw my name and addy into the hat. I am stationed overseas but USPS will ship as if I am in New York, only have to add a customs slip but adds nothing to the cost to shipper or me the receiver.

let me know if I can play and I will pm my address.

Aaron, what part of the Eastern Shore? Grew up in DE, school in Easton, worked/played in OC, Salisbury, rehobeth, etc. Was just home last summer breaking some blue claws and shucking oysters...Been all over the world and delmarva is the only place I really miss.

We live in Easton, I work in Cambridge. My wife grew up in South Anne Arundel County about three houses from the Bay. So far, we wouldn't trade it for anyplace else we have lived (Rockville, Boston, Upstate NY).

If you head "home" look me up.
77seriesIII
Aaron,

Now that is funny. I spent many years in Easton, parents sent me to the private school, Sts Peter and Paul during the high school years. Good times spent romping around St Michaels, Easton, Oxford, Cambridge, etc. We went so far as to check out the rumored CIA safe house in St Michaels...wasnt a good idea because it wasnt a rumor or it was a group of more than slightly mad similarly dressed guys... :cannotbe: Place has changed and not changed over the years, I didnt have trouble recognizing old haunts at all, even after not showing up close to 15 years. The time away let me enjoy the area all the more.

I'll give a holler when I head back that way, maybe meet up at one of the restaurant/pubs in Easton/St Michaels area.

Erick

I'll add my name to the queue. If I need to do more than to express my interest, just say.

Cheers,
Ryan

I am looking for the next mailing address. I emailed spasticteapot for an address, but I haven't heard back. I have raided the box and refilled as needed. I have time to mail it out tomorrow and my wife wants it off the table. So, who is next?
Spasticteapot
Hmm - I didn't get an E-mail
DaveM
Spasticteapot

Got your address. I will try and get the box in the mail tomorrow.
DaveM
Hi Teapot,

I have emailed several times. I must be hitting the spam filter. You sent me your address, but not you name. I don't know what the mail carrier would think of a package addressed to Spasticteapot.
Spasticteapot
D'oh!
jackinnj
Stu -- was there a Crydom SSR in the box that I sent? I'm trying to hook up my toaster-oven with an MCU to do reflow and and the relay's gone missing.
Spasticteapot
Does anyone know if the small SMPS in the box actually works?
jackinnj
Hey Spaz' speakin' about Wisconsin -- my son has a WI tea-shirt which reads: "Nothing tips like a cow".

I think that the power supply I put in the original box was a linear one from Lambda.
