Hello everyone,
Now that I got my plasma mounted, I'm gathering thoughts and info on ideas for a homemade entertainment center/stand/rack whatever you want to call it.
How this pertains to audio is that I want to integrate a subwoofer into the stand.
My thoughts are to make a center section 20" wide "open air" with shelves for my htpc, receiver, cable box. This will be flanked by a cabinet for storing movies, etc. On the other side a box (that looks identical to the cabinet) which houses the subwoofer and plate amplifier.
My initial thoughts were that the mass of the stand + equipment will have a lot of mass to prevent extraneous vibrations. A few of my concerns are vibrations on the HTPC and the sound of a sealed, down-firing subwoofer just 4-5" off of the hardwood floor. I also realize that I will not be able to properly position my sub in the room. (But the benefits of keeping my boss happy are more important ;) .)
I'm more of a discerning listener that your typical best-buy consumer, but not an audiophile. FWIW, the subwoofer is an infinity 10" car subwoofer driven by a 200W RMS amp. This sub is "pretty" enough that I wouldnt mind a side fire either.

| vibrations might cause your DVD to skip. I would go ahead with the plan, but I would not physically connect the "sub cabinet" to the stand. I would leave about half an inch of space between them. this way you still have 99 percent of the look your looking for without the problems of dealing with vibrations |

Thanks for the replies.
Setting it beside may work, but I'd like for the top to be solid. Keep in mind that this is only a 200W 10" I'm not going to be shaking the neighborhood with this. Regardless of how the computer sits in relation to the sub, if it's close I"m going to be putting some rubber damping feet on the computer case. The drives will also be mounted with some sort of shock absorbers.
Audio quality is my main concern. It will be constructed primarily of 3/4" oak veneer and hardwood where necessary. Should the feet be grounded to the floor through spikes or pads?
If I choose to down-fire a sealed sub, how high off the floor should I keep it? 1" from xmax, 5"?
If I ever get around to making a sketch, I"ll post my ideas.
