WARNING: Before it is totally apparent, yes this is ANOTHER newbie post.
I am interested in building a set of studio monitors, but that would be loud enough to rock out in a 15x15 room. I feel like a linear frequency response would be a good thing for a DJ anyway, so hopefully there is no contradiction here? I imagine it being a two-way system with either a tweeter/woofer or a full-range/woofer combo. I am looking for recommendations on a decent combination, keeping $value$ in mind. The Fostex FE127E is in my price range ($90/pair?). I have been looking at Madisound.com, but maybe there is some amazing online catalog that I don't know about? I will build the enclosures, which should not be a problem. I will also build passive crossovers because I can get the parts cheap. Would a 2nd order crossover be appropriate here? Lastly, where can I find an amp? I am estimating each cabinet will be ~150W rms. Thanks for the help :D |

This isn't really the right forum, but I'll keep it on topic by suggesting that you could build chip amps to power the monitors. If a single LM3886 isn't enough, a pair bridged should certainly do the job.
You want speakers with pretty good power handling, since they need to be loud enough to be heard over the main PA (if there isn't an isolated booth). 10" to 15", preferably cast frame. Don't design for real low bass, just try and get a good thump, so an F3 somewhere in the region of 60 Hz should be fine.
Wait... this is just for a 15x15 room? Well... the chip amps are still an excellent choice. And I'd still suggest going with some thing reasonably large that can thump, since you need to be able to judge how stuff feels out on the dance floor. But, smaller speakers plus an active sub could be enough. Or, best bang for the buck: A couple of good quality vintage '70s or '80s speakers from a thrift store or yard sale. Just watch out for rotted surrounds, and department store or white van junk. |

| Hey thanks for the response Dangus. Yeah I put this in the chip amp section by mistake, but the coincidence has led me to what I have been looking for. Quite frankly I was unsure about how I was going to power the system, and wasn't really ready to pony up the dough for an amplifier. I plan on building the power supply and using chip amps; the LM3886 looks like a good option for me. Looks like I have some designing to do, I'll let you know how it turns out! |
