Orion 222sx discretdevice layout... - Click HERE for Original Thread
Messerschmitt
I have an Orion 222sx that someone has badly abused, and I cannot identify all of the discrete divices and their placement correctly as most were destroyed. The 222sx is the second generation amp with the MosFET power supply. I think that I know what most of the devices are but could someone please verify the components and locations, since I have no other amp to compare to. Thanks in advance! Messerschmitt

I have one and can crack it open. What specifically do you need? The large components attached to the heatsink or the board components? If you take a picture and circle what you are missing that may help.

I just need the layout of the heatsink mounted devices and their part numbers. Be careful of the sticky tape that holds the heatsink clamps on. Thanks, Messerschmitt

My 222sx is in absolutley mint condition and part of my private collection so I won't be pulling the bars.

However it is a classic Orion design and I can tell you what the componets should be without pulling the bars.

There are 8 components per side and they basically mirror each other. See the text picture below.

1 2 3 4 5 6 7 8
Power Orange channel RCA jack side
Wire side
Black/Yellow channel
1 2 3 4 5 6 7 8

Devices 1 2 3 on each side are the power supply switchers. You should see a gate resistor connected to the gate of each one. If you can read any of these, that is your part number for all of them. Generally you can use IRF3205 to replace these. *If you do not see gate resistors and all the gates are simply connected together, this means that it is NOT a MOSFET supply. I have a 250SX that uses D44H11 devices here.

Devices 4 on each side are the rectifiers. Use FEP16CT on one side and FEP16CTA on the other.

Devices 5 and 6 are the output transistors. One will be a 2N6488 (NPN) and the other a 2N6491 (PNP) Each transistor does have the wave. This is a Class AB amp.

Devices 7and 8 are the regulators for phantom power and preamp sections. You will need a 7815 and a 7915 on each side for the +/- 15v.

If that spawns any more questions anyone else on here should be able to help given the layout I provided above. Good luck to you!

Looks like it didn't like my formatting try this:

<-Power wire side
RCA Jack Side ->

1 2 3 4 5 6 7 8
Orange channel

Black/Yellow channel
1 2 3 4 5 6 7 8

This amp was burned up by the previous owner and he/she apparently tried to fix it. The amp currently contains no regulators and I cannot be certain of any of the current components.

If I remember correctly the layout provided by Minibeast sounds right based on my experience with other Orion amps. Could someone actually verify these parts for me, with their exact locations. I hate to be a pain but I just dont have the Orion schematics or another 222sx laying around.
Thanks again, Messerschmitt

The power supply side is back together and working without the output devices or the regulators. It seems that I should have a 2N6488, a 2N6491, A 7915, and a 7815 on each side. I just need the locations for each. Thanks, Messerschmitt

The center leg of the 7815 is connected to the first leg of the 7915 and to the secondary ground (RCA shield).

The third leg of the 6491s will be connected to the center leg of the positive rectifiers (via emitter resistors). The third leg of the 6488s will be connected to the center leg of the negative rectifiers (also via emitter resistors).

After finally getting a look into another 222sx I found a surprise. The voltage regulators are not 7915/7815s like usual, but 6488/91 pairs with what appears to be a simple zener voltage regulator on the base. Anyone seen this before? Based on the board layout the 78/7915s wouldn't work. This was a second generation amp so maybe things changed later. Messerschmitt

The 275SX and the second generation 225 HCCA (both used the same board) also had discrete regulators.
