Need suggestion about power supply config consideration - Click HERE for Original Thread

In general, regardless of circuit design/sonic charater, should using bigger caps, or using oversize transformer, will make an amplifier sounds more dynamic and powerful?

For example a power amp circuit recommand using 180VA transformer with 10000uF x 2 caps for each channals, so:
A) 180VA transformer with 22000uF (or bigger) x 2 caps
or
B) 220VA (or bigger) transfomer with 10000uF x 2 caps

Which config should I go for?

and what kind of amplifier do you propose?

Let's look at this question another way. The difference in price of the two transformers you suggest is only a couple of pounds (possibly smaller where you are). So go for the larger transformer and don't even think about.

The cost of pairs of 2200uF caps, and 10,000uF caps would be less than another 20 pounds. So buy both and try them. If you are into DIY, you will always find a use for the ones that you don't use.

There really is no substitute for hearing these things for yourself. An answer from God himself would only express His opinion! ;)

Thanks for the comments.

I am referring to a very general GC 3886 circuit, and yes, a larger transformer cost far much less then larger caps here in Hong Kong, but due to the limited of chassis space, I can only make choice for either larger transformer or larger caps.

Although I have lots of spare caps in hands, but all just could only use for testing, which I will not use them in the amp finally, since all I have left is Japanese brands take out from kits I have ever order, but I always only use European brands materials, as I still will finally spend money in the end, so I would like to ask for comments, skip the testing stage for keep the spare components still new, maybe someday I can sell them to someone who like Japanese audio grade components, and target to what I should spend for.

test the options outside the box and then adopt the final layout inside your size/volume constraints.

just to know:

if i have power supply with 4 caps (6800uF x 4)
those are different brands....

what happen with it?

:D

People will accuse you of being indecisive! ;)
