2008 Maxon Motor Group Buy
Hi. I'm starting this new thread for a new group buy of Maxon Motor and PCB Controller because there was a lot of demand for it after the 2007 GB was closed.

However, It will be a much simpler project this time with only PCB / Motor / Pulley offering, you do the rest. So, I repeat, simpler this time, no parts kit, no partial kit, no tape, no motor pod or custom plate. Sorry but the previous GB was a logistic nightmare and very time consuming.

To let you know, I already have 8-12 members interested.

I would need 25-30 orders for the PCB (PCB minimum order is 30) and 20 orders or more for the motor.

This project comes with an extensive documentation. Please read the 2007 Maxon GB thread for numerous discussion, project history and a lot of info. All these informations is compiled into the latest documentation version 1.4, soon available on Bas Horneman website. I'll post the link when available.

The previous group buy prices were:
Here are the price breaks for motor 110191 a-max 26mm

1 $250.00
2 $125.00 each
3-4 $106.70 each
5-19 $83.90 each

PCB, my own version (2.0) of Mark Kelly design, with integrated battery charger, leds indicators, etc... was 30$ each with optional gold plating. All previous members agreed that it was a very nice PCB and liked it.

Greg Nuspel worked very hard to design and produce a custom pulley for it. The custom pulley is needed to support both 33/45rpm speeds. It may be possible that he contributes for an other run of pulleys, but it is not sure. The current controller support 33rpm speed using a standard Teres Tape pulley that you can buy directly from Teres Audio. The custom pulleys were 25$ each Tape or String Drive. I would like to keep it to just one type of pulley this time, to simplify Greg's life and reduce options as possible.

We will see if there is any interest. Feel free to email me.

Thanks...
Spica
I'm in for a motor and board, probably a pulley when that is finalized

Hi,

I'm very interested in this group buy as I am really think about building my own turntable.

However, I must ask: When is this group buy going to close? A Month?

Thanks,
West
Algar_emi
We would need around 10 motors and at least 20 PCB's to think about closing the GB and making the order. I have a minimum order of 30 PCB's and I need to pay all of them from my own pocket. There is a good chance I can sell the 10 left since it seems to be a popular project. However, I'm doing it at my own risk.

So, at the end it depends on how fast people joint the group. But, you're right, if in about 1 month, if there is still not enough interest, the GB won't probably happen. So joint now, this is not a promise to buy the stuff, just an interest.

There won't be any turning back once the parts would be paid by you and me, but until then, there is no problem.

So, can we count you in? If yes, send me an email.

Thanks...
Algar_emi
Just received the motor price breaks. They are slightly higher than last year. These prices are from the Canadian Maxon distributor:

1: 140$
5: 110$
20: 95$
50: 80$

These prices are U$ and don't include taxes and custom/delivery charges to my home. Also, since I'll be paying with my Credit card that is in $CAN, currency exchange variation at the time of payment will also apply.

So, we are back I guest to a minimum of 20 motors/PCB to make this GB possible. We have all the prices now, we are just missing the orders ;)

Hi, i am new to this forum. I am in the stage of making my first turntable. Being a skilled machinist, all of the machining part of my project is almost complete. Question ? i have no idea about the electronic side of things, and i need a good motor, speed control. Is this has hard has it looks. I have never soldered anything in my life. if other members think that i can achieve it then i may be intested in a motor, pcb and pulley. Many thanks Keith

Algar,

I would like to confirm my subscription for two kits (2 motors + 2 PCBs + 2 pulleys). Is there any preference yet for type of pulley (tape vs. string)? Meanwhile, I will keep an eye on the 2007 GB to follow up how other people succeeded with the same project.

Regards,
luvdunhill
I would like to remove the PCB and pulley from my order. Sorry if I'm being a kill-joy :)

I ended up purchasing one of the previous kits that included these things (and the parts) and just would like a single motor at this point.

Yes, we are almost there. I'll close the GB with 30 PCB, so hurry while there is still time. That may well be your last chance because I doubt there will be an other one.

Main reason I get into that much work again is because I want one PCB for me and one motor for Greg.

mmmm.

Can you upgrade me to:

2 x PCBs 2 x Motors and 2 x pulleys

Can the tape pulley also incorporate the V belt at the top? if the pulley was made to 20mm long it could incorporate both for 1/4 inch tape and a belt.

Hi All Sylvain,
Please add me for one PCB, i am still working on the original kit and think a spare would be a good idea.

Algar_emi
robmil the concept of two pulleys in the same one, string and tape was dropped long time ago. This pulley was too high, was unstable, was too heavy, put too much stress on the motor and could cause premature motor failure. It was tried in the original Mark Kelly thread and cause all kind of problem.

It seems that one of the major characteristics of the TT motor pulley is mass, the lower it is the better.

mikey_audiogeek please send me an email with your request and Name and Shipping address. Thanks...

YAKI
Hello, I am building my first DIY turntable. I have two questions I would like to kindly ask:
1. Is the pully radius "assumes" that a 30 cm plate will be used? I meen, is it assumes that the "belt" will go around the plate itself?
2. Is there a way to send it to Israel...? Hope it is ok to ask :) Please feel free to say no and I will find a way to get it from Canada.

Most chanses I am for the motor, PCB and a pully. Can I give my last answer tommoro?

Thanks, Yaki

Hello, please count me in for 1 PCB, 1 motor and 1 pulley !

Yaki
The pulley is the part that attaches to the motor shaft. The string or belt/tape(depending on the design) then wraps around the 12" platter and pulley. As the pulley spins it drives the platter with the help of the string or belt/tape.This will be my first DIY table too.I would suggest to go back and read the previous group buy thread that another gentleman provided the link for in the previous page of this tread.A lot of information there, also check the Teres Audio website .
Best regards
George:)

Hi. Thanks for the interest. I have to remind you that a request on this thread only is not enough to complete your inscription to this GB. You need to send me a personal email with your name, shipping address and confirmation that you can pay using PayPal. By doing so, I also insure that I get your personal email and make sure you get the price estimate, shipping cost, request for payment, etc...

Simple request without these informations cannot be accepted. I'll need to be paid first for the parts (using PayPal). Then I need to be sure I know where to send the parts before I buy them. Otherwise I can get stuck with thousand of dollar worth of parts.

Thanks for your understanding...

SB

By the way, a good introduction to this project is to download the complete documentation. Read also the FAQ sections in this doc. See Bas Horneman website link for the doc: http://www.basenjes.de/tubes/data/s...Doc_Ver_1.4.pdf

Take note that I'll close this GB with 30 PCB's, next quantity to order being 50. I must also remind you, that this is a simpler, quicker GB. Just one type of pulley will be offer. It will probably be a string pulley unless everyone want a tape pulley. A tape pulley, the Teres may be order directly from Teres Audio (it will support only 33rpm speed). The string pulley is a good compromise, been smaller, lighter, etc, and not being available commercially (custom built). As mentioned at the beginning of this thread, the last GB with the multiples options was just too time consuming and mind bugling. I may have 2-3 tape pulleys left from the previous GB pulley exchange program, that that will be all.

Algar_emi
I'm not getting involved in anything mechanical or that need machining. It can get a real nightmare, very rapidly. If you need any other parts, you'll need to find the solution yourself. Turntable mechanic is a lot more complex that it seems at first sight. It is not something an amateur should try, and I certainly know nothing about mechanic (and I want to keep it that way ;) )

Noted Spica. Please forward all your requests to me by email so I can keep a trace of them. Thanks.

I see the Teres new platter goes for $1425 for 2-3/4 inch thick and $1675 for a 3-3/4 thick.
Many regards

My email is: bergeron.syl"at"videotron.qc.ca

Teres may be your best one of your best choice. Clearaudio also has numerous upgrade parts available for their TT. It may be possible to buy an upgrade platter/bearing kit and use it as starting point for your project.

Nanook was trying to put together a platter/bearing GB. He made some progress I think. You should try to contact him. Search the forum for his post.

I'll close the GB pretty soon with 30 PCB's.

Then I'll email each of you with a first payment details. It will include the part's prices that you choose. You must send me the money using PayPal. Then I can buy the parts.

So, check your email and respond rapidly to my payment request. The faster I get the money, the faster I place the orders and that you get the parts. Rough estimate is already close to 4K$ total for me to spend on parts. Sorry guys, but I don't have this kind of money myself.

Once I get all the parts, I'll recontact all of you with shipping cost and last minutes cost adjustments (if any). Also, any money contributions to my hard work is really appreciated :D. I use these small donations on my projects ;). Feel free to do so or not.

Thanks...

Can you please put me down for 1 motor.

Cheers

Noted Paudux.

Still no email from: Antonn, Lignatom and Sidd. Please reply. Thanks...

Got reply from Greg Nuspel. He confirmed that he can do the pulley.
We have to agree on one (1) type of pulley only. For previous reasons, it will be probably be String pulleys.

I still have 2 Tape pulleys from previous GB to sell. So I can sell these two as well.

Algar_emi
Sorry Quan, I don't any tape pulley left. One of the replacement pulley for the previous GB never get to its destination, so I'm sending it in replacement. No more Tape pulley left.

Hi guys, has anyone used this kit for replacement of Linn turntable.
I like to know if the pulley would still be ok to use as the Linn subplatter is much less than 30cm?
Thanks.
Toaster
The group buy pulleys are too large in diameter for the Linn. The Teres pulleys, if you can get them should be fine, but, more importantly, you will not be able to use thread or tape drive with a standard Linn, because of the spring suspension system. The relationship between the motor and the subplatter has to be pretty much fixed. A rubber suspension like that of the Roksan Xerxes should be OK, but any significant lateral movement, which you will certainly get when you spin the platter up, will lose the thread or tape- it'll drop off. Don't be mislead by my intended use with a Systemdek- I'll either be replacing the springs with sorbothane 'blobs' of some kind, or perhaps attaching the motor to the subchassis, which is a (fairly radical) option you could try. Rather than modify the Linn subchassis and kill it's resale value it may be worth looking at a DIY subchassis. Now that Linn has debunked it's own mythos about the superiority of a 'lossy' subchassis and armboard with the introduction of the Keel, you should feel reasonably happy to experiment with aluminium extrusions or WHY. Particularly if you were willing to accept a removable armboard, a near copy of the Keel be made by anyone with a decent-sized milling machine and some 'aircraft grade' aluminium plate.
Have fun!

Thanks Toaster , definitely food for thought.

Hi, I joined the GB but I don't see my name on the latest list. Don't want to miss out!
Algar_emi

I'll probably start sending email for payment this week.

Bye.

I am interested in participating in the group buy. I can't e-mail directly via the forum, since I am a new member. I sent you an e-mail via the address on your web site. I would be interested in the motor, pcb and pulley. Thanks
ichiban
Hello, if I'm not too late, please count me in for 1 PCB and 1 motor.
Thanks,
YAKI
Hello,
Hope I don't disturbe, but do you have any estimation regarding the "purchas execution", that is, when do you expect to order the motors etc'? Hope I don't diturbe - just planing my project time... :-)
Thanks,
Yaki

1 pulley, 1 pcb, 1 motor for me if I'm not too late. If I am too late, I'll hold off for GB 2009. :) Thanks.

I would like to place the order in the next few weeks. I'll start sending email with total to pay using PayPal soon. Check your email. The faster everyone pay, the faster I'll place the order.

Not yet. This is a holiday week-end in Quebec, and taking care of the family is the priority for the next few days. Don't worry, it will come your way ;)
whubbard
No problem at all.
Just making sure its all moving forward.

Thanks again for running it.

zoobird07, ichiban send me an email with your order, diyaudio usename, complete name and address.
My email is bergeron.syl"at"videotron.qc.ca

Yes, tnargs you're on my list.

For any other member interested in this group buy, please continue to send me email with your request. Even if this group is about to close, there is always drop-out down the line, so there is a good chance that I can still offer you a kit.

Thanks...

I'll start sending emails this evening.

Prices for initial payment (so I can but the parts myself) are:

Motor (quantity 20-50) = 95$ + TX(5%+7.5%) + shipping to me = 110$
PCB = 30$ + TX(5%+7.5%) + shipping to me = 35$
Pulley = 25$ (From Greg Nuspel)
3%PayPal fee

Total = U$175

My paypal address is: algar_emi"at"hotmail.com

I added a few bucks on the motor and PCB price to cover other possible charges such as exchange rate fluctuation or charges from PayPal when transferring the money from U$ to $CAN, etc...
I'll mentioned that the previous GB was a real nightmare just to follow small bits of fees here and there and make sure I don't loose money at the end.

I'll make the final corrections at time of shipping.

Thanks...

SB

Price increase!

I don't know about you guys but I find the price hike here a bit steep. I can't see how these prices have gone up by so much. The motor has gone up by $30! ..that's a 37% increase.

I had a budget set aside which was pretty much fixed...now I'm not too sure.

I suspect that's the Canadian distributors cut, as the previous group buy was direct from the manufacturer.

I had thought that this was direct from the manufacturer?

see post #13

after placing a few large orders, Maxon may be mandating this, who knows. I trust that our gracious host has done his homework on this one, but I was also surprised by the price hike.
