Yes, the Papa in jammies pic is priceless.
And the tidbit about the B1. Definitely looking forward to
seeing that. |

Which, coincidentally will be the day that I find the article on the shelves :) Hard copies are nice to have around though.

Mmm, the thumb on Jack's 'informal attire' picture seems to be pointing at me.
Will be interesting to see in which way the B1 differs compared to Mr Rollin's line-driver.
(Eeek, i'm getting retinal images of the kind of pajammies a Unix-hacker wears) |

Well I too finally got my copy of AxP. It seems to take a little longer for things to make to the west coast of Canada.
I spent last night studying the article for the first time. I really like the way Nelson wrote the piece. He used a style that presents things in a bit of a matter of fact format and the thoughts flow together very well.
Thanks very much to Nelson.
Now to work on understanding the details and gathering parts.
Another fun adventure |

sorry, i am sure this is a stupid question.....but i am wondering....
Is it possible to achieve more power and more class A range and a balanced version with the F5? (i don't know...by paralleling more output devices?) |

Stefano,
8mA * 24V ~200mW, the maximum dissipation the J108/K370 can manage.(without a heatsink hat)
The J74/J108 only handle 25V Max, P-channel JFETs are the common limiting factor (though the Jammie master said they can take more in practice)
There's little point in adding output devices without higher rail voltages.
Balanced operation is a possible option, and already mentioned several times in the F5 thread. |

by cleverly proposing a visit when Jason, the mysterious person who started this silly place was visiting me, I got to visit the pirate room
This is Jason threatening Nelson with a Kung Fu move or maybe I just have forgotten what was happening.. Nelson looks properly terrified. Note the bench in the back- the famous "kitchen table" of First Watt. |

The Pirate Room, and Nelson, the vicious dog (ZM's brother) and myself. Nice wine I was forced to drink! Count the amps just left around! the real rack is off to the right, you can see part of it..
That's a copy of Weird Science comics on the upper left on top of the bookcase

I found it! The small rectangle partially in the pic on the left. It wasn't all pretty,as here Nelson is enraged after I made some careless comment about cascoding (nah! I'm lying)
The important thing is there's the rack in the back. |

Thank god for modern cars. No hood ornaments. It'd be impossible to survive being flipped over the hood of one of those cars, you'd be cut wide open from neck to crotch. With a blunt instrument, no less. Very messy.
To keep on subject, I just came be back from the book store, I bought the rag with the article. An absolute rarity for me. I was curious. Obviously (And I know nothing but the looking at the circuit in the article) that it should be Mills Wirewound for the 3W resistor. There are other ways to do it, but that might be the best financial choice as well as for it's own reasons.
BTW, I'm a Huge Tesla/Russel/Keely/Shauberger/etc fan...so the 'The Quiet Earth' Poster did not escape my attention. Bruno was awesome in that film. One of my top 10 films, and I've seen, oh, well over 5000 films.
Edt: 5 and 10 watt mills would likely be judged to 'sound better'. Maybe. Depends on construction.

That's not the final finished circuit that was published in the 'xpress mag.
IIRC, it is an acknowledged error, both should read 600(?) Ohms.
Hack that I am, Even I can make some sort of cranial sense out of this puppy.
Thanks for the simple one, Nelson. I can visualize this one in a single shot. Not that I've spent much time at doing such things, though.
I'm a 'flow' kinda guy, and this one's got flow. I'm into more fundamental issues than circuitry, in general, as it seems simpler to me. Fix it all on the most base level possible....and the rest just follows, like open doors with no more keys required, as the keys and doors were only there due to not knowing the master points.
Maybe it's just me. |

I was buddies with the heiress of the Simi Winery family while in university, but they sold it later. One of the good things about the place Nelson and I both attended - it had an excellent enology department. I was going to be a winemaker for about a quarter until I discovered it involved lots of learning and hard work. I did get to have an elegant lunch with the Mondavi family in one of their vinyards because one of their sons was in a class I took .
I didn't know Nelson or anything then, also he is OLDER than me I think :devilr: I guess we were there at the same time for 2 years.. There WAS a lot of interest in audio there though. Possibly because the campus was quite a ways from anything interesting. Possibly because it was the '70's
Nelson looks quite happy indeed. I guess good sound makes him rapturous -Or maybe because he wasn't listening to my pontifications!
I dunno about the dog - he was rolling around on the floor constantly whereas we only did that occasionally-so there!
