Non-EU mini BG for FQA19N20C and FQA12P20 - Click HERE for Original Thread
Dennis Hui
Hi,

I figure I'd ask if anyone might be interested in a GB
of the aforementioned parts for those of us in non-EU
nations.

Digikey.ca has these parts but have it accepts orders only
in multiples of 450 units. I'll probably be interested in
about 100 pieces each.

Based on the current digikey price, I'm guessing a
per-unit GB price of $0.70CAD for the N-channel
and $0.82CAD the the P-channel part. Shipping
and paypal fees are extra.

Please reply to this thread if you might be interested.

Thanks,
Dennis

Dennis,
I'm certainly interested. I'll put some thought into quantities this afternoon.

I'd be in for 20 of each

I take it these wont be matched?
twitchie
Replacements for IRFP240 and 9240 is that right?

Count me in for 60 pieces N-channel and 36 pieces P-channel, or something in that neighbourhood :clown:

Is the standard package for these 25 in a rail as well? If so, I'll go for something like 75 and 50 or whatever's convenient for you.

Thanks for arranging this Dennis

I was looking into this until I realized the brokerage fees
would wipe out any saving...

Well, I've been thinking about this. It's
certainly a lot of work, though it may be
worth it.

My understanding is that the
EU GB will Vgs match the parts in pairs.
Naturally there will be some parts that
don't match well and will be rejected. I
think Patrick has budgeted 10% as
duds.

Any opinions on whether we should try
matching the parts?

Cheers,
Dennis
EUVL
Dennis,

According to the datasheet, the P and the N parts have different nominal Vgs at 1.3 or 2A (the P part about 1V higher). So any attempt to match P to N fet will probably end up with a hugh reject rate.

I only promised to match amongst Ps and amongst Ns. That way, you can at least build identical stereo channels. With a bit of luck, you can build very nicely matched balanced version for even harmonics cancellation. That is the attraction of doing balanced.

Of course there are tricks to get better distortion cancellation in the single ended version, like balancing the open loop gain on the top and bottom half. I speculate that is what Nelson meant by tweaking; so I am holding my breath.

Thought I mention this for your reference.

And don't underestimate how much time you need to match 900 FETs. Will take you one working day easily. And you then need to sort, repack, .......

Patrick
Dennis Hui
Hi Patrick,

Thank you for your comments. Yes, I was thinking of
Vgs matching only the N's with N's and P's with P's
and didn't make it clear. Thanks for pointing it out
explicitly.

Matching will definitely be a major chore. I matched
a batch of 125 mosfets a few years ago and it
took me ~4 hours. I'll be lucky to get a single
polarity matched in one day.

Hmmm....maybe I shouldn't be so quick to agree to
anything. :)

Cheers,
Dennis

I guess you can order from Mouser (we can't easily), so why not just restrict the GB to 250 pairs ?

Half your matching work load.
;)

Hi Dennis,

I would like 100 N channel and 50 P channel please. It would be nice if they came in rails as they usually match nicely:-)

Thanks Arthur
twitchie
Hi Dennis,

I would not ask you for matching if I can get whole rails. I am happy enough to get these so much cheaper than the IR parts cost, and have the fun of matching them myself :D

Ah...nothing quite like spending a sunny Saturday afternoon
matching mosfets. :)

Dennis

OK...a bit more information:

Digikey lead time for the parts: N-channel: May 27/2008
P-channel: July 1/ 2008

Each rail from Fairchild contains 30 mosfets. These parts
are non-stock at Digikey, which only accepts orders in
units of 450 pieces.

There doesn't seem to be much enthusiasm for matched parts,
so I guess we'll skip that. (Whew! :) )

May I ask that members order N and P channel parts in
equal number? I don't mind if some want more
N while others want more P parts , but I'd prefer not
to have too may of one polarity left over.

Cheers,
Dennis

I'm looking at my digikey order that I am waiting on backordered parts before I send in. For 25 IRFP240 and a measly 4 IRFP9240, it's almost $70 CAD.

If my math is correct

60x 0.70 = $42.00
60x 0.82 = $49.20

Definitely put me down for 60 of each.

If anyone participating in the GB would be willing to sell matched devices in small numbers, please contact me. I just would like to build one F5, and would need three complete sets of devices, one or two to blow up during construction mistakes, and one to use for the rest of my life, or until the F6, or F7, or F8 ... takes its place. Thanks in advance - Pat

30 each for me!

Hi Dennis,

can I change my order to 90 of N-channel and 30 of P-Channel?

I've contacted a member to see if he wants to
pick up the P parts. Let's see what happens.

Dennis
Dennis Hui
OK....here's the current order count. The two numbers
after the member name are the number of N and P parts
requested respectively.

Dennis Hui, 100, 100
Blues, 60, 60
pchew, 30, 30
mlloyd1, 20, 20
SCD, 20, 20
7/10, 20, 20
DaveM, 20, 20
twitchie 60, 60
bakus11, 30, 30
Luke, 90, 30

=============

That's 450 N-channel parts and 390 P-channel parts.
I'm in contact with another member to see if he's
interested in picking up most of the P-channel parts.
If that goes well then I can accept Luke's order.

I think the prudent thing for me to do is to not accept
any more orders at this time. (Not that I'm really
expecting any more, as the interest hasn't seem
that great.)

Stay tuned for more information....

Cheers,
Dennis

Hey Dennis,

Hello,

I've looked up some shipping info.

First of all, the standard Fairchild packaging is 20 inches
long, which makes them a bit awkward to pack. Also, I
don't have the exact weights of the parts with packaging
so I'll have to make some guesses based on some
tubes of IRF's that I have.

Shipping cost to US: (Small packet airmail)
================
8.55 CAD for < 0.5kg
13.25 CAD for up to 1kg.

Shipping cost to locations in Canada:
==========================
Please check shipping on canadapost.ca
based on the weight below. You can
use the postal code of M5S1A1.

Shipping to rest of the world (small packet airmail)
====================
15.80 CAD < 0.5kg
31.00 CAD for up to 1kg.

0.5kg may be good up for to 50-60 mosfets in total
and 1kg for perhaps up to 120 pieces. This supposes
that we can pack things lightly. Cardboard shipping
tubes may be too heavy. (One possibility is to
simply cut full tubes in half and then they can fit
nicely in large padded envelopes...) Count on $2
for packing supplies.

Cheers,
Dennis
Dennis Hui
Hello,

I have added shipping estimates in this long-winded post:

http://www.diyaudio.com/forums/show...632#post1498632

I would like to get member confirmations to see if I
can proceed with this GB.

Please PM me throough this forum to confirm whether you
would like to participate in this GB. The part prices are
$0.70CAD for the N-channel and $0.82CAD for the
P-channel devices.

Shipping and paypal fees are extra.

If I received enough confirmations then the GB will
go ahead. I will then send out invoices and collect
payment, after which I will place my order with
Digikey.ca.

I contacted Digikey and they quoted a 4 and 9 week
lead time. This is consistent with the May 27 and
July 1 dates I gave earlier.

Please let me know at your earliest convenience whether
you would like to participate.

Cheers,
Dennis

I didn't receive any reply on my offer to take ~30 of the P and ~30 of the N parts.

It does not seem that any order has been placed. Is it too late to participate?

Thank you very much for looking after this.

Now a request. I am in need of J-fets for an F5 and other Pass projects. Is any one interested in looking after a small group purchase for J-fets.
