Getting ready to build a monster class A amplifier, and will be needing some large heatsinks. I've seen the group buy for Conrad heat sinks awhile ago, I think it's about time for another. Goal is going to be 50 pieces, which shouldn't be too hard. I will be ordering six for myself. What heat sink would people be the most interested in? I'm thinking the MF30-100 is sufficient for my needs, and it's a nice size too. Fins are 1.81 inches tall (46mm), and the base dimensions are 3.94 inches (100mm) by 11.81 inches (300mm). Fins are oriented vertically for best heat dissipation. Still waiting for a response from Conrad regarding the cost of 50+ heatsinks, I've emailed them three times in the last month with no response, I'm guessing the online inquiry form is not working... Just getting this out there to see the interest. Here's a link for more info and a pictures:

Just some info ;)
I have earlier bought a bunch of sinks from Conrad, and have always received fast replies and deliveries.
Try email them at: sales (at) conradheatsinks *dot* com |

Yeah, I sent an email yesterday to this address, so hopefully I will hear back soon with prices. Thanks,

Hi cwujek,
If no joy is had, Altronics do mail order and stock that heatsink. Another Australian company like Conrad. They supply manufacturers as well so should be OK with bulk orders.

I've bought heatsinks from Conrad, and they are very high quality.
For class A I'd strongly recommend the MF35-151.5. When corrected for ambient room temperature, this model has a c/w rating of .29.
It's much better to call Conrad rather than email.
BTW, one pair of MF35-151.5's is design perfect for a stereo Aleph30. Mine runs about 145 degrees F after 2 hours.

| I would be interested in some MF35-151.5... |
|
|
| cwujek |
| I requested a quote of a few different models. The MF35-151.5 was one of them (although I don't like the 151.5mm height vs the 100mm height). Conrad actually is having email problems, and they sent me a letter explaining the situation via Airmail (now that's good customer service!). It seems that my email is the only one with this problem. So I have created a new email with a different server, and hopefully will have a quote soon. Thanks for you patience, there already is enough interest (on this forum and elsewhere) to justify ordering. |
|

| I will be interested in the MF35-151.5 as well. For MF30-100, I probably will need a quad for one F4 or Aleph 30, 2 stacked on each side. |

Hello Chris
From your earlier post I phoned Conrad Engineering and spoke to Julienne the manager. He said he had received your emails but when he replied they were bounced back all the time. He mailed you a response which you mentioned you received.
It sounds like you still have issues with the email response, he is eager to please you guys over in the States, but it is hard to do business if you can't reach each other.
Try and fax him at + 613 9387 2896, or get someone there with a working email address to email him at: sales@conradheatsinks.com
or best bet is to phone him on + 613 9387 7106.
Don't forget he is about 20 hours ahead of you guys on the west coast of USA.
Cheers
Gary.. |

Ok, prices are in. $40 per heatsink for the MF35-151.5 excluding shipping to the US. I'm thinking I'll get all US orders shipped to my location first to save US buyers some shipping costs from Australia. Apparently demand has gone way up for these heatsinks, so they won't be back in stock for another month. I will take orders up to that point. As an estimate, I would say final price for a pair of heatsinks will look like this:
2x$40 + $8 shipping to my location from Australia + $10 shipping to your door=
$98 for a pair of heatsinks (This is an estimate, but I would imagine it's going to be pretty close to this).
I'll get final shipping costs from Australia in soon.
BTW, anyone in the Seattle area is more than welcome to pick these up, and if your close I'm sure I could drop them by. :) |

It's possible, but I would imagine things will top out around 70-80 heat sinks. Still have at least a month until they are back in stock, so if there are enough orders by then I will update the price. I emailed them for a 100+ quote along with a shipping quote. |

I'll see what's cheaper. It would cost around $40 to ship a pair of heatsinks to someone in the US direct from Conrad, vs. about $20 if it were shipped to me and then to someone in the US. Orders outside of North America will get shipped direct from Conrad, as this would be cheapest. |

Yes, this is fine.
For those of you who have asked when the order will be placed, it will be at least a month because Conrad is currently out of stock. I will take orders up to that point so we can try to break the 100+ barrier. Finally called Conrad on the phone, and got in touch with the boss. He said he will email me within the next two days with a price including freight, which will be a substantial part of the cost. I'll post as soon as I hear from him.

yes, I have seen some of their work before and it is very nice. Since the dimensions of the heatsinks pretty much dictate the case size, I'd be interested in the option of having this extra work done. I think usually it's in the form of a machined strip of aluminum that attached to the top and bottom of the heatsink and contains holes on top for the lid and holes on the ends for the front and rear panels. Seems to me that it could be an optional item, or perhaps something they carry in stock that could be simply added to the order. |

Total=92 confirmed, possibly 14 extra
Shipping quote came today. Looks like it's going to be $458.90 to get exactly 100 heat sinks sent by airmail to the closest airport, but I'll have to head down to Seatac and pick them up. So per heatsink, each person will pay about $4.60 to get them shipped to me. So if you get a pair of heatsinks, costs will look like this:
$40 x 2 = $80
$4.6 x 2 =$9.2
$10 to ship within the US
$99.20 total
I don't think there is going to be a price break for ordering more than 100 heatsinks, which is kind of disappointing. I have contacted another vendor to get a quote on some very similar heat sinks, want to see if I can get a lower price. |

Collection of money can be through Paypal, but you will have to pay for the Paypal fees. I am fully Paypal verified. Check/money order also works for me, along with bank transfers. Let me know if there's a method you want to use, I can probably make it work for me.

Hi cwujek,
I'm interested in getting 4 heatsinks but I'm wondering if that will cause a hassle for your shipping scheme since I'm in Australia? I can call Conrad and see if they will let me order on you coat tails.

I will post payment info a week in advance of the heat sink purchase. As I said before, Conrad is currently out of stock, and will have more stock in about a month. I will let the group buy run until then, and all interested persons will then be emailed to confirm their order.

Still no reply from Conrad, it's been a few days and I have not gotten a response. No rush since it's going to be a month anyways, but I would like to get some final prices and quotes ready. I'll keep everyone updated and post once I hear from them. I have contacted another heat sink distributor, and am trying to see if there are some good heat sinks within the US for a reasonable price.

yes, I have seen some of their work before and it is very nice. |
I'd highly recommend the GB get the heatsinks with a 2mm deep x 5mm wide rabbited strip along one side of each heatsink for easy mounting of a lid.
Attached is a picture of my Aleph30 with the Conrad 151.5x350 heatsinks. I wish they had a machined ridge for the lid.
What does the group think about Conrad doing this for us?

From my experience, much larger surface area is needed on the lip of the Heatsink for a bottom panel, due to the weight of the tranny and torsional flex of the chassis.
If a flat bottom panel is used, it needs to be 4mm thick. This is OK with me.
Another alternative is a bottom panel 2mm thick and bent up 3/8" to .5" inches to mount the heatsink. Bending provides a great deal of extra strength.
Attached is a picture of a version of this I've used a couple of times with great success. This particular design is a complete "U" channel made from 2mm aluminum. The box is ROCK solid and easily carries the full weight of a class-A amp.
The box was designed and made via Frontpanel Express and bent up at a local sheetmetal shop.

Chris,
Can I suggest an alternate supplier to Conrad?
www.accelthermal.com
They have an extrusion that looks to be a good one for high power audio amplifers in their Model #926 profile. They are located in Brea, California. I have no idea as to cost. However I have exchanged friendly emails with the president of the company and I am sure that he would be eager to sell a volume of extrusions. They also do custom milling and anodizing.
Might be worth looking into.

+1 on that. Most of us are not metal fabricators. Paying a few bucks to have it done at Conrad would be cheap compared to the time and frustration I will expend trying to do it myself. :D

I'm a personal friend of Julian, the guy who owns and runs Conrad. He will bend over backwards to help in any way he can, and produces an exceptional product. I've used nothing else on my kit and retail amplifiers for ten years.
Highly recommended.

I have emailed this company, and they look like a very good alternative, and one that will probably take the order from Conrad if I can work out an order. A 13.5" by 6" heat sink with 2" fins (the same as the 926 profile just wider) will be about $20 each. Plus, shipping is made much easier and cheaper. I have emailed them for pricing on making a lip, but bear in mind these are raw aluminum. I actually prefer this because it allows me to just paint them black, which supposedly has the lowest thermal resistance (compared to raw aluminum or anodized aluminum). I know Conrad makes a great product, but I don't look forward to having to pick up a 550 pound package from the airport and work out custom fees and all the other fees that are associated with Atlas freight service. I would love to hear some feedback/comments on switching from Conrad to Accel Thermal, I can't really see a reason why not to....

I'd prefer a single wider heatsink. Carl's drawing is an 8.35" wide section.
If it's going air, the order will probably be delivered in a number of smaller packages rather than a 550 pounder. Still a lot of work to load though. |
|
|
| SCD |
It appears the 926 will require the fins to be placed horizontal if we chose a 14 inch length. That would be 8.35 tall by 14 inch length. I am more keen on the fins being vertical as in the conrad.
Does R-theta have a product we are after. For me it would have to be similar to the Conrad to be a go.
I like vertical fins |

I'm not sure what a rabbet buys you. It makes the heatsink look thinner (a purely aesthetic consideration) and you still have to screw down the lid to something, meaning you'll still have to use an L bracket or something anyway and you all have to agree on the same thickness. Here's mine without rabbet:
The top and back of my Aleph30 with Conrad sinks
But don't listen to me as I've already got my Conrads and won't be getting into this GB. Good product by the way. |

I am keen on cheaper, raw aluminum heatsinks. The 8.35" X 12-14" would seem to be the ticket here. Yes vertical thermal flow is better, but if this meets the c/w requirement, I am in for these instead.
Every penny we save makes a us a little richer. This is not a poor mans hobby, even for DIY.:D |
|
|
| cantskienuf |
| If everyone were building the same amp and we determined the C/W adequate, then I would agree. I'd prefer to be overspec'd thermally so as to eliminate any chance of having to bias at less than optimum performance. |
|
|
| cwujek |
It is not the same as the 926, I'm in contact with the manufacture to get these made pretty much the same as the Conrad heat sinks, if anything they are a bit larger (with vertical fins of course :)). Custom milling is an option for about $2.50 more per heat sink, if some want this done I would be happy to leave it an option. I've emailed other heat sink manufacturers, and many have never gotten back to me or do not have comparable products (which is why I started this as a Conrad heat sink group buy). Accel seems to be the only one that will be able to give us the same heat sink for a better price, minus the black coating Conrads heat sinks have. They can have them I would be happy to paint heat sinks black for an additional fee, but I will have to find out what paint will work best and how much it costs. Thanks for your patience everyone, and thanks especially to Carl Huff for the suggestion! I'll let you know as soon as I have an update.
edit: One last thing. These heat sinks can also be cut to different heights. For those of you who want them to be even taller than the 6 inch standard I am going to use, it could be done. I obviously don't want 20 different heights, but if some people agree about a taller heat sink I am fine with getting some cut. Two or three different heights are fine with me.... |
