Conrad heatsinks group buy - Click HERE for Original Thread
mithomas
I talked to a few people at ComAir awhile back about a couple of extrusions that looked real good. They have a calculator to get what you want for dimensions and tells you the thermal C/W some as low as 17.

I think the E1387 is a good candidate.
They wont sell direct.

I got passed to synergistics locally, they passed me to Arrow Electronics, who never got back to me. If I promised an order of 200-300 feet, they might get interested.

They seem to have lots of extrusions, and cant imagine they would not have something almost all would be happy with. If we can agree on an extrusion, and amount of 12-14" cuts, I can help push through what I already started.

If you end up with Conrad MF35-151.5, I am in for 2.

I'd be interested in a 12" height option :devilr:

Any news from suppliers?
BobEllis
I could use 12" height sinks, too.

Options for 6", 9" and 12" to keep it relatively simple?

cwujek-i would like a pair of the conrad mf35 151.5 heatsinks email me when you are ready to place the order--thanks bubba177
cantskienuf
It occurs to me that if Conrad is on backorder status for this extrusion and expecting the new shipment in the next few weeks, it might be prudent to be at the front of that backorder list, rather than waiting for the next shipment to arrive before placing the order. Just a thought.
luvdunhill
I'd be interested in a status on this group buy as well :)
cwujek
Sorry for the delay, life has been busy and communication sparse from different vendors. I think the order will in fact be placed through Conrad. Accel thermal kept telling me they could do the heat sinks just like I wanted with no minimum order, but today after I tried to nail down a buy they said they can't actually do it. I'm sick of dealing with them, so Conrad it is. I agree with the comment on closing the group buy earlier, so the deadline to order is going to be March 25th. This will give me time to collect payment and get money to Conrad. On the 25th, I will email everyone interested to confirm orders, and also confirm if custom milling is wanted for an additional $2.50. Thanks for your patience everyone,

Chris

Please put me down for 2 (MF35-151.5). Thanks!

cwujek,

I'm interested up to 6 heatsinks but I mentioned earlier I'm in Australia so that may cause a problem in calculating shipping, etc.

Please put me down for 2. Thanks!

Tentatively in for 2.

If you want heat sinks, just copy and paste the list below and add your name in the same format. Also, if you want a heat sink milled with some type of lip, it's going to be a bit more complicated to calculate. Instead of a flat $2.50 fee, there is actually an initial $30 setup fee to mill the heat sinks. After that, each heat sink costs $1.50 per side milled. So if you wanted a pair of heat sinks to have a lip on one side, it's $3, plus the $30 setup divided among users who decide to get their heat sinks milled. If you wanted a pair of heat sinks to have a lip on the top and bottom, it would be $6, plus the $30 divided fee. If more than ten heat sinks are milled, the cost per side milled is $1.12 instead of $1.50. Let me know if anyone is confused or wants more info about the milling process.

Will the lip be 2 or 3mm deep (i.e. how thick can the top or bottom be so that it is flush) and how many screws along the side and what diameter?

I'd like all 12 of my sinks milled on top and bottom. Furthermore, if it's possible to add a pair of tapped screws on the front and the back ends of each for the ultimately in lazyiness, I'd do that too. If I'm the only person interested in this, I'll pay the entire setup fee if need be.

While I could go either way on the milling, I definitely would like the drilling and tapping on all four edges.

can we also get the dimensions for how thick the lid and bottom can be, or a general drawing of what the strip will look like?

My friend just let me know that he wanted some too, so I've updated my total to reflect that, hopefully it's not too late. I've also taken the liberty to add up the quantity columns and updated the totals in the wiki.

I'm still waiting for a reply from Conrad. I've chosen new dimensions for the milled strips to make it more of a standard size for the mainly US buyers (6.35mm or 1/4 inch wide, and 3.175mm or 1/8 inch deep). I'm checking to see if Conrad can tap 1/4 inch threads instead of metric threads. This will make it easier for those in the US to find bolts. I am also looking to provide bolts to those who wish for an extra charge. Thanks again for your patience, Conrad still doesn't have the heat sinks back in stock though....

Just add yourself to the wiki. You can pretty much disregard the closing date for now, as I won't close the group buy until I finalize things with Conrad.
nvrgdenuf
Stupid question,
How do I add myself to the wiki? If I add in my name it shows underneath the structured categories. I dont want to 'experiment' and mess it up. I want (4) sinks, drilled, tapped and milled.
thanks
argofanatic
Just do a copy/paste.

Copy one line with existing info.
Paste it back, change the data to your needs.

Then don't forget to update the totals at the bottom.

Conrad has promised me they will get to me by the end of this week. It takes them some time to get around to emailing. I have asked how soon they will be ready to ship, and I should get a response by the end of the week. Sorry for the delay, there just really isn't anything I can do on my end.

Finally received this response from Conrad last night (after asking how soon the heat sinks can be shipped off):
"This might be a problem - tooling for the MF35's has been found to be unservicable (severe cracking due to thermal cycling) and a new casting die is currently being made. Unfortunately this will cause a delay in supply to the first week of June."

This is significantly longer than I would like to wait, so I will look at other options once again...
orthoefer
My project is going slower than I thought, so June is ok with me.
mithomas
I still think ComAir Thermaflow looks good on paper.
That being said, I am doing the Surplus angle now, and will likely bail out of this. So my 4x is quite conditional. I will update Wiki if needed.

My projects are moving slow as well, but no heatsinks with Pass Amps is a show stopper to.
SCD
I am okay to wait a bit. I plan on doing the construction sometime on the fall.
I like to the ide of having all my sinks the same. I already have a nice set from Conrad so I can wait.
Maybe the F5 will be ready for a group buy by then

Did we get approval for different height orders? If so, I'd like 12 inch (or more accurately, 151.5 x 2 = 303mm) sides.

If this is already too complicated, the 151.5 will work.

Hi folks,

Just wondering what the current status of the group buy is?

I'm looking to get enough to build 2 F1s. And I've noticed that for First Watt designs, some posts seem to suggest 1 pair of sinks per amp, others suggest 4. Any one built a Pass with these? Did 1 pair work?

Lastly, were prices ever finalized?

Conrad just emailed me to let me know that they are going to be ready to start a run of these heatsinks in about 10 days. They need final quantity numbers for the heatsinks, so I will need to confirm with all members in this group buy to make sure the quantities posted in the wiki are accurate. I will be emailing each user individually later tonight to confirm your order, and will start a new list of confirmed heatsink quantities. Conrad will then give me a final price, shouldn't vary to much from the prices posted before. Thanks for your patience everybody, I'm actually pretty surprised at how quickly time went by.
